Rational Design of Triboelectric Materials and Devices for Self-Powered Food Sensing.

Against the backdrop of rapid advancements in 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, there is an urgent need to upgrade food sensing systems to achieve automation, digitalization, and intelligence. However, this transformation process faces numerous challenges. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), as an emerging energy conversion and sensing technology, play a crucial role in this context. They not only provide power to functional devices but also serve as sensors in multifunctional self-powered food sensing systems, capable of detecting various physical and chemical information. This

Mitigating neurological, cognitive, and psychiatric sequelae of COVID-19-related critical illness.

Despite advances in the treatment and mitigation of critical illness caused by infection with SARS-CoV-2, millions of survivors have a devastating, post-acute infection syndrome known as long COVID. A large proportion of patients with long COVID have nervous system dysfunction, which is also seen in the distinct but overlapping condition of post-intensive care syndrome (PICS), putting survivors of COVID-19-related critical illness at high risk of long-lasting morbidity affecting multiple organ systems and, as a result, engendering measurable deficits in quality of life and productivity. In thi

Adherence in transplantation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Adequately managing a complex medical regimen is paramount to the success of organ transplants. When patients stray from their prescribed medical regimen posttransplant, graft rejection, and death can occur. Predictors of adherence have been studied for many years, and various factors have been identified as contributing to adequate or poor adherence. Both demographic and personal characteristics have been associated with adherence behavior. However, recent developments, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, increased use of mobile health interventions, and use of medical biomarker

A National Strategy For Palliative Care.

In 2014 the World Health Organization called for palliative care to be integrated as an essential element of the health care continuum. Yet in 2017 US palliative care services are found largely in hospitals, and hospice care, which is delivered primarily in the home, is limited to people who are dying soon. The majority of Americans with a serious illness are not dying; are living at home, in assisted living facilities, or in nursing homes; and have limited access to palliative care. Most health care providers lack knowledge about and skills in pain and symptom management, communication, and c

Diagnosis and management of von Willebrand disease in the United Kingdom.

The UK treatment strategy for von Willebrand disease (VWD) is based on consensus guidelines produced by the United Kingdom Haemophilia Centre Doctors' Organization (UKHCDO) relating to the diagnosis and management of VWD. Selection of therapeutic products suitable for treatment of this complex inherited bleeding disorder is based on the observed response. Desmopressin (DDAVP), an analog of vasopressin, is the recommended treatment in individuals who respond to this drug on trial infusion. DDAVP clearly has no effect in type 3 VWD but may have variable clinical effect in individuals with other

A review of transfusion practice before, during, and after hematopoietic progenitor cell transplantation.

The increased use of hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) transplantation has implications and consequences for transfusion services: not only in hospitals where HPC transplantations are performed, but also in hospitals that do not perform HPC transplantations but manage patients before or after transplantation. Candidates for HPC transplantation have specific and specialized transfusion requirements before, during, and after transplantation that are necessary to avert the adverse consequences of alloimmunization to human leukocyte antigens, immunohematologic consequences of ABO-mismatched tran

Factors Influencing the Implementation of a Multispecialty Virtual Ward Program in the United Kingdom: Qualitative Exploration of Staff Experiences and Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: The National Health Service (NHS) in England is facing unprecedented demand for hospital services, with virtual wards (VW) being a central tenet of the strategy to manage these ongoing pressures on capacity. VWs combine digital and analog tools, monitoring systems, and teams of multidisciplinary care providers to support patients in their place of residence who might otherwise be cared for in a hospital. Despite virtual ward programs continuing to proliferate in the United Kingdom and across the globe, the models of care that support them are still evolving, and best practices in t

"It's about maintaining a calm and reassuring presence": a qualitative study about ambulance clinicians' experiences of caring for patients with breathlessness.

BACKGROUND: Despite breathlessness (dyspnoea) being a common and serious symptom that often necessitates ambulance care, there is still a limited understanding of how ambulance clinicians (ACs) experience and manage these situations in the pre-hospital setting. Given the potential severity and complexity of breathlessness, as well as its impact on patient outcomes, a deeper insight into ACs' perspectives is essential. This study aimed to explore ACs experiences of caring for patients with breathlessness within ambulance services. METHODS: An inductive qualitative design was employed. Data wer

Assessing the knowledge, training and capacity of health workers in the diagnosis and management of soil-transmitted helminths and schistosomiasis in eastern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect millions of people in Africa, with Uganda bearing a significant burden. The World Health Organization (WHO) set a goal to reduce NTDs and improve access to diagnosis and management by 2030. However, NTDs have not been well integrated into primary healthcare in many countries, including Uganda, due to limited knowledge and resources among health workers. The study aimed to assess the readiness and capacity of primary healthcare centres to diagnose and manage soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) and schistosomiasis. METHODS: A cross-sectional q

Endometrial sampling in low-risk patients with abnormal uterine bleeding: a systematic review and meta-synthesis.

BACKGROUND: One million women per year seek medical advice for abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) in the United Kingdom. Many low-risk patients who could be managed exclusively in primary care are referred to hospital based gynaecology services. Performing endometrial sampling (ES) in the community may improve care, reduce the rate of referrals and minimise costs. We aimed to search and synthesise the literature on the effectiveness of ES (Pipelle versus other devices) in managing AUB in low-risk patients. METHODS: We undertook an electronic literature search in MEDLINE via OvidSP, Scopus, and W
