Intraosseous rhabdomyosarcoma of the mandible: a case report.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common soft-tissue sarcoma of the head and neck region in children and adolescents. Oral cavity involvement is relatively uncommon, with tongue, soft palate, hard palate, and buccal mucosa being the sites of predilection. This report presents a rare case of intraosseous oral rhabdomyosarcoma arising in the mandibular bone of a 6-year-old child. Clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic features and possible pathogenesis are discussed.

Stability of dental implants in microvascular osseous transplants.

Microvascular iliac crest and scapula transplants have been used in reconstruction of the lower jaw following tumor surgery. It has only been with the insertion of dental implants that a satisfactory prosthetic rehabilitation of the patient has been achieved. For this study, a follow-up of 38 patients with lower jaw tumors was carried out. The patients had been treated with partial resection of the lower jaw and neck dissection with microvascular iliac crest transplants (n = 20) or microvascular scapula transplants (n = 18); this was followed with dental implants (n = 143) in the region of the

Unusual ameloblastoma with extensive stromal desmoplasia.

A clinicopathological study of 5 cases of unusual ameloblastoma was performed. Three cases were characterized by marked stromal desmoplasia. The lesions occurred in the tooth-bearing areas of the anterior or premolar regions of the jaw. They were relatively small and showed a honeycomb appearance radiographically. Histologically, the islands of tumour cells were small and discrete in the widely extended desmoplastic stroma. They lacked obvious ameloblastic polarity in many parts. The other 2 cases were hybrid lesions of desmoplastic and conventional types. The former appeared in the alveolar p

Paediatric tumours of the jaws in northern Nigeria. Clinical presentation and treatment.

134 cases of paediatric tumours of the jaws in Nigerian children are reviewed. Non-odontogenic tumours and tumours of mesenchymal origin were the commonest. Among malignant disease cases, Burkitt's lymphoma predominated. Late presentation for treatment and gross disfigurement were typical clinical findings. Most of the non-Burkitt malignant lesions had grown to inoperable proportions and the few that were amenable to aggressive surgery responded poorly to treatment.

Regional macrodontia and regional bony enlargement associated with congenital infiltrating lipomatosis of the face presenting as unilateral facial hyperplasia. Brief review and case report.

Congenital infiltrating lipomatosis of the face (CIL-F) is a rare lesion. Presented here is a review of the literature concerning this condition, with the report of a case with clinical signs indistinguishable from those of unilateral facial hyperplasia. Previously unreported clinical and radiographic features of regional bony hypertrophy and macrodontia associated with this case of CIL-F are described and the proposition raised that previously reported cases of unilateral facial hyperplasia may have been due to CIL-F. It is suggested that the clinical findings in this case of facial asymmetry

Intravascular angiomatosis (Masson's lesion).

Intravascular angiomatosis, also known as Massons' lesion, is a relatively uncommon, although important, tumor because it clinically mimics such benign lesions as mucocele, pyogenic granuloma, and hemangioma, as well as malignant neoplasms such as angiosarcoma and Kaposi's sarcoma. More important is the potential for misdiagnosis at the histological level that poses a significant problem to those unfamiliar with this lesion. This article reviews the literature on perioral intravascular angiomatosis and presents five additional cases.

Odontomas as a cause of tooth eruption disorders.

BACKGROUND: Odontomas are odontogenic tumors located in the jawbone, referred to by the World Health Organization (WHO) as hamartomatous (Greek hamartion - a bodily defect) developmental malformations. The term was first used by Brock in 1866 to refer to every odontogenic tumor. Today an odontoma is believed to be a congenital malformation of dental hard tissues. Odontomas can contribute to the development of dental abnormalities and bite disorders. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to present tooth eruption disorders caused by the occurrence of odontomas in 20 patients treated at the Dental Surger

Management of aggressive and extensive benign mandibular lesions by resection, curettage, freezing, and reimplantation of involved segment.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of treatment of aggressive and extensive benign mandibular lesions by resection, curettage, freezing, and reimplantation of involved segments. STUDY DESIGN: In 9 patients with extensive, recurrent, and aggressive mandibular lesions, reimplantation of resected segment after immersing in liquid nitrogen was done. RESULTS: After ≥18 months' follow-up, out of the 9 patients, one developed wound dehiscence that healed with conservative management and another local abscess and subsequent pathologic fracture that was treated by

Anatomical variation in deep inferior epigastric pedicles and implications for harvest of lower abdominal flaps.

The transverse rectus abdominis musculocutaneous (TRAM) flap based on the deep inferior epigastric artery is useful in head and neck reconstruction as it provides substantial skin and soft tissue cover, and allows volume to be replaced in large defects. A major advantage is the anatomical reliability of the deep inferior epigastric pedicle. We report a case in which neither rectus abdominis muscles had a blood supply from the deep inferior epigastric artery, which necessitated a change in the planned reconstruction. We review variations in the anatomical course of the artery and, although rare

Hyperparathyroidism associated with sarcoma of bone.

The objective of this paper is to report the uncommon association of hyperparathyroidism (one case resulting from an adenoma and the other from chief cell hyperplasia) and sarcoma of bone. The radiographic appearances of both cases were thought to be a little unusual and are discussed in detail. The possible relationship of the sarcomas to brown tumors is discussed.

[Gardner's syndrome. Review of the literature. Report of a familial form].

Through a family form study and a literature review, the authors define the symptoms of the Gardner's disease and the checkup to be carried out. Sometimes, the surgical treatment, proposed in an aesthetical purpose, is difficult to carry out due to the tumor location and consistency. Incomplete forms are likely to be more frequent but the risk of colic degeneration remains the same as for the usual form. Examination and multi-departmental care are required.

Metastasis in the mandibular condyle: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Most bone metastases are observed in the trunk of the body. Metastasis in the mandibular condyle is rare. In many case reports, temporary common temporomandibular joint disorder-like symptoms can be a sign of relapse and metastasis. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of breast carcinoma metastatic to the left mandibular condyle in a 55-year-old Japanese woman, who visited our department for a dental check-up prior to chemotherapy. She had almost no symptoms, but radiographs suggested the existence of metastasis. CONCLUSIONS: In many case reports, patients had some symptoms.

Customized repair of fractured mandibular reconstruction plates.

PURPOSE: To describe a novel technique using custom prostheses to repair fractured mandibular reconstruction plates spanning discontinuity defects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective case series reviewing the design, rapid manufacture, and use of a novel method to repair fractured plates. Three patients who could not undergo autogenous bone grafting procedures or replacement of the entire plate for medical or socioeconomic factors were treated by this method. RESULTS: Three patients with fractured reconstruction plates were treated with a custom prosthesis engaging the reconstruc
