Clinical characteristics of pediatric external auditory canal cholesteatoma.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: External auditory canal cholesteatoma (EACC) is caused by an invasion of squamous tissue into a localized area of pe … treated via a postauricular transcanal approach. Three patients (patient nos. 2, 6, and 7) required mastoidectomy. CONCLUSION: Pediatric EACC is not less aggressive than adult EACC. Therefore, early diagnosis and adequate treatment are necessary. Further studies are required to elucidate the clinical features of pediatric spontaneous EACC.

Vascularized reconstruction of partial external auditory canal wall defects using the middle temporal artery flap.

OBJECTIVE: To review indications and surgical outcomes for partial canal wall defect reconstruction using the middle temporal artery (MTA) r … and there were no flap-related complications. Many cases (56%) involved previous intact-canal wall mastoidectomy surgery in the past with apparent degeneration of thinned canal wall bone. In 2 cases, the MTA pedicle had been violated by previous surgery; however, a smaller vascularized flap based on remnant blood supply was successfully used in each instance. …

Bioactive glass ceramic in ossicular reconstruction: a preliminary report.

Current techniques for ossicular reconstruction include ossicular autografts and homografts, and plastic and ceramic prostheses. Experimenta … chronic ear disease underwent Ceravital ossicular reconstruction with tympanoplasty with or without mastoidectomy. Five other patients (14%) underwent ossicular reconstruction--2 for congenital anomalies, 2 for temporal bone trauma, and 1 patient for glomus tympanicum removal. Patient follow-up ranged from 2.2 to 3.8 years, with a mean follow-up period of 2.9 y …

Improved autologous cortical bone harvest and viability with 2Flute otologic burs.

OBJECTIVES: To determine if 2Flute (Stryker Corporation, Kalamazoo, MI) otologic burs improve the size, cellular content, and bone healing of autologous cortical bone grafts harvested during canal wall reconstruction (CWR) tympanomastoidectomy with mastoid obliteration. STUDY DESIGN: Institutional review board-approved prospective cohort study. METHODS: Human autologous cortical bone chips were harvested using various burs (4 and 6 mm diameter; multiflute, and 2Flute [Stryker Corporation]) from patients undergoing CWR tympanomastoidectomy for the treatment of chronic otitis media with choles…

Cochlear implantation and mastoid obliteration in a patient with Alström Syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the outcomes of cochlear implantation with mastoid obliteration in a patient with Alström Syndrome and chronic otorrhea. METHODS: This is a single case discussion of a patient with Alström Syndrome and chronic otorrhea who underwent unilateral cochlear implantation and mastoid obliteration in January 2019. Subsequent contralateral procedure was performed 4 months later. Implantation was pursued due to the progressive sensorineural hearing-loss that is characteristic of Alström Syndrome. Serial Audiograms were obtained before and after procedure. RESULTS: Following imp

Transmastoid and Transtemporal Drainage of Petrous Apicitis with Otitis Media.

BACKGROUND: Petrous apicitis (PA) is a serious infection involving the apical portion of the petrous temporal bone. The classic triad of purulent otorrhea, ipsilateral abducens nerve palsy and retroorbital pain is rarely seen due to early detection and widespread use of antibiotics. Medical management is the primary treatment modality with surgery reserved for cases of recalcitrant petrous apex abscess. METHODS AND RESULTS: We presented a case of PA with previously untreated otitis media. After multidisciplinary evaluation, the patient was initially treated with intravenous antibiotics follow

A Rare Case of Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Isolated in the Mastoid.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) isolated in the mastoid is very rare. Its diagnosis, especially in the early stage, is often challenging as during that stage, the signs and symptoms may be nonspecific. Our paper describes a case of a patient with an isolated mass in the left mastoid with persistent peripheral facial paralysis, and this was initially diagnosed as facial neuritis and granulation. However, histological examination later revealed an ACC exhibiting tubular and cribriform patterns. Our paper discusses the diagnostic basis, treatment, and outcomes for this case to improve the understa

Expression of EMT markers and mode of surgery are prognostic in phyllodes tumors of the breast.

Phyllodes tumors of the breast are rare neoplasms that account for <1% of all mammary tumors and 2-3% of fibro-epithelial neoplasms of the breast. We evaluated the clinicopathological characteristics of a cohort of 246 Chinese patients in relation to the expression of epithelial-to-mesenchymal (EMT) markers in benign, borderline and malignant tumors and the prognostic value of different surgical regimens. We observed that survival outcomes correlated with the mode of surgical management in the three patient groups. Expression of E-cadherin, Snail, Slug and Twist were higher in epithelial cells

Canal Wall Down Timpanoplasty with Partial Mastoid Obliteration in Children and Adults Affected by Chronic Otitis Media with Cholesteatoma.

Background: The aim of the study is to evaluate the incidence of recurrence of acquired cholesteatoma and functional outcomes in patients who underwent CWD tympanoplasty with cavity obliteration using an inferior-based musculoperiosteal flap. A comparison between children and adults was conducted. Methods: All surgeries performed by the same expert surgeon from 2016 to 2019 were considered for the study. Patients younger than 18 years old, operated on at Meyer's Children Hospital, formed group A. Patients older than eighteen, operated on at Santo Stefano Hospital, formed group B. Clinical, aud

STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study. METHODS: Using the University of Melbourne VR temporal bone surgery simulator, seven ENT consultants and seven ENT residents performed two trials of the surgical approach to cochlear implantation on a virtual temporal bone. OBJECTIVES: To characterize the sociodemographic features of patients with temporal bone carcinoma and evaluate current treatment patterns. METHODS: This study analyzed data from the Cosmos database (2015-2024) to identify patients with surgically treated temporal bone malignancies using ICD-10 codes (C44.21, C44.22, and C44.29) and CPT codes for external auditory canal excision, temporal bone resection (69535), and mastoidectomy procedures.
