Deregulation of Selected MicroRNAs in Sinonasal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Searching for Potential Prognostic Biomarkers.

Sinonasal carcinomas are head and neck tumours arising from the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses characterized by unfavourable outcome, difficult treatment, diagnosis and prognosis. MicroRNAs are key molecules in the regulation of development and progression of cancer and their expression profiles could be used as prognostic biomarkers, to predict the patients' survival and response to treatment. In this study, we used quantitative real‑time PCR with TaqMan® Advanced miRNA Assays to investigate the relative expression values of selected micro- RNAs in a unique set of formalin-fixed paraffin-

Maxillary sinus schwannoma.

Schwannoma (neurilemmoma) is a benign tumour that arises from the Schwann cells which cover the nerve sheaths of the peripheral or autonomic nervous system especially the sympathetic system. Reported cases of schwannoma arising from the sinonasal tract are rare. We report a case of a 28-year-old man who presented to otolaryngology-head and neck surgery clinic with left cheek swelling and left-sided nasal obstruction for 1-year period. Endoscopic examination and high-resolution CT scan revealed a homogenous expansile mass occupying the left maxillary antrum extending to the left orbit and left

Pure sarcomatoid carcinoma of maxillary sinus and nasal cavity simulating malignant fibrous histiocytoma.

Although a few cases of sinonasal carcinoma with focal sarcomatous differentiation have been reported, pure sarcomatoid carcinoma has not been reported in the English literature. Imaging studies and gross inspection in a 60-year-old man with left-sided face pain revealed a mass in the left maxillary sinus and nasal cavity. A large incisional biopsy specimen from the nasal cavity revealed proliferation of malignant spindle and round cells with a malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) pattern. Tumor giant cells were scattered, and there were areas of a vague storiform pattern. Mitotic figures were

Squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, maxillary antrum and lip in a Zimbabwean population: a descriptive epidemiological study.

Squamous cell carcinoma accounts for approximately 90% of oral malignancies. The objective of this study was to document the gender, age, sub-site distribution and histologic differentiation of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, maxillary antrum and lip in a Zimbabwean population. Hospital records of patients with a histologic diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, maxillary antrum and lip seen at Harare Central Hospital and Parirenyatwa Hospital in Zimbabwe during the period January 1982-December 1991 were reviewed. 20.8% (n = 358/1723) were squamous cell carcinoma

Case History Report: Immediate Rehabilitation with a Prefabricated Fibula Flap Following Removal of a Locally Aggressive Maxillary Tumor.

The present clinical case history report describes an interdisciplinary treatment protocol that combines maxillary tumor resection with immediate reconstruction to achieve functional rehabilitation. A fibula flap that received four dental implants and a split-thickness graft epithelial layer was prefabricated for a 31-year-old man. The flap was designed so that it could be adapted to fit in different extents of tumor resection. Resection and immediate reconstruction were successfully performed 6 weeks after flap prefabrication, with the final bar-retained dental prosthesis delivered 4 weeks la

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the paranasal sinuses: retrospective series and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVES: Adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACC) are rare malignant tumours arising in the major and minor salivary glands. Involvement of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses is rare and poorly described. The purpose of this study was to define the clinical and prognostic criteria of ACC of the paranasal sinuses based on the review of a series of 25 cases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Single-centre retrospective study of 25 cases of ACC of the paranasal sinuses managed between 1998 and 2011, evaluating epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic and prognostic criteria. Factors influencing survival (Kaplan-

Primary Maxillary Sinus Plasmablastic Lymphoma in HIV/AIDS.

Classically, the HIV/AIDS-related lymphomas are of the B cell type and involve the central nervous system and the abdominal cavity. Primary maxillary sinus lymphoma is rare. Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is an aggressive form of non-Hodgkinvs lymphoma, and is extremely rare. Here we present a case of plasmablastic lymphoma with primary site being maxillary sinus, a rare location.

[Nasal cavity and paranasal sinus cancer].

The nasal cavity and parasinusal cancer are rare (10% of tumors of the head and neck) and are mainly represented by squamous cell carcinoma of the nasal cavity or the maxillary sinus and adenocarcinoma of the ethmoid sinus (occupational disease, wood dust). The most common clinical sign is nasal obstruction, but tumors can also manifest as rhinorrhea and/or epistaxis (usually unilateral signs). A magnetic resonance imaging of the facial structure is systematic for staging before treatment. The treatment consists of a first surgery if the patient is operable with a resectable tumor. If it is no

Detection and prediction of local recurrence of maxillary sinus cancer using F-18 FDG PET/CT.

PURPOSE: The aim of the current study was to investigate the role of F-18 FDG PET/CT in the detection and prediction of local recurrence of maxillary sinus cancer. METHODS: Retrospectively, we analyzed F-18 FDG PET/CT images of maxillary sinus cancer patients for the surveillance after treatment. Twenty-two consecutive patients with maxillary sinus cancer, who underwent maxillectomy followed by adjuvant radiation treatment, were included in the study. F-18 FDG PET/CT images were analyzed visually and quantitatively. RESULTS: The median age of the patients included in the current study popula

The first report of molecular characterized BRD4-NUT carcinoma in Brazil: a case report.

BACKGROUND: NUT midline carcinoma is a rare and aggressive subset of squamous cell carcinoma, which is characterized by the translocation of nuclear protein in testis gene that is mostly fused with bromodomain and extraterminal family proteins. We describe here the first Brazilian case of NUT midline carcinoma with BRD4-NUT fusion detected in a next-generation sequencing panel and we present the clinical evolution of this patient. CASE PRESENTATION: A 42-year-old Caucasian man was diagnosed with poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the left maxillary sinus, with negative in situ h

Patterns of Initial Lymph Node Involvement and Recurrence in Patients With Maxillary Sinus Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Determining whether to treat the elective cervical lymph node (LN) area remains a dilemma in maxillary sinus squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). This study analyzed the patterns of initial LN involvement and recurrence to guide treatment strategies. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 119 patients with maxillary sinus SCC treated between 2005 and 2023. Patients received definitive concurrent chemoradiotherapy, neoadjuvant therapy followed by local treatment, or upfront surgery with or without adjuvant radiotherapy. RESULTS: Among 119 patients, 28 (23.5%) had clinical LN involvement a

Locally advanced maxillary sinus cancer fed from the internal carotid artery.

OBJECTIVE: Superselective intra-arterial infusion of cisplatin and concomitant radiation therapy (RADPLAT) is one of the effective treatments for advanced maxillary sinus cancer, and prospective trials have been conducted. However, treatment of cases with intraorbital infiltration or skull base infiltration that are fed from the internal carotid artery (ICA) may be problematic. In this study, we investigated the frequency, treatment, and prognosis of locally advanced maxillary sinus cancer fed from the ICA. METHOD: This study included patients with locally advanced maxillary sinus cancer (cli
