[Study of the degree of pneumatization of the viscerocranium in man and pongidae].

The volumes of the paranasal sinuses of 41 adult skulls of humans, gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans, were examined with use of a Computertomograph type SOMATOM DR. The percentage distribution of the volumes of the different paranasal sinuses showed that the maxillary sinus always had the greatest volume. The maxillary sinus of the humans showed the smallest volume percentage in comparison with the pongids. The typical differences between humans and pongids were observed in the ethmoidal cells and the sphenoidal sinus. The ethmoidal cells of the gorilla and the orangutan have to be defined

[Distant metastases to nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses, from the organs outside the head and neck].

INTRODUCTION: The metastases from below the clavicles, to the head and neck region, are relatively uncommon, and usually demonstrate during the progression of the primary disease. At that time, the correct diagnosis requires only to compare the pathology report from the primary biopsy, with the biopsy from the lump in the head and neck. The majority of distant metastases to the head and neck region are localized within the lymph nodes. The metastases to nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are very rare and usually localized within the maxillary sinus. MATERIAL: 4 cases, out of 46 all distant m

Human paranasal sinuses and selective brain cooling: a ventilation system activated by yawning?

The function of the paranasal sinuses has been a controversial subject since the time of Galen, with many different theories advanced about their biological significance. For one, the paranasal sinuses have been regarded as warmers of respiratory air, when in actuality these structures appear to function in cooling the blood. In fact, human paranasal sinuses have been shown to have higher volumes in individuals living in warmer climates, and thus may be considered radiators of the brain. The literature suggests that the transfer of cool venous blood from the paranasal sinuses to the dura mater

Protrusion of the infraorbital canal into the maxillary sinus: A cross-sectional study in Cairo, Egypt.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of infraorbital canal protrusion in an Egyptian subpopulation using cone-beam computed tomography and to describe its radiographic representation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using the records of 77 patients and 123 maxillary sinuses. The full lengths of the sinuses were visible for the detection of infraorbital canal protrusion. The infraorbital canals were classified into 3 types based on their relation to the sinus. If the septum was present, its length and its distance from t

Bilateral Sinonasal Inverted Papilloma: Report of an Uncommon Case Involving Sinuses of the Face and Orbital Cavity.

BACKGROUND Nasosinusal papilloma is a benign aggressive tumor. It usually occurs unilaterally in the nasal cavity and can extend to the sinuses. The diagnosis is made by the correlation of findings observed in tomographic and histopathological exams. The recommended treatment is surgical excision with clinical monitoring. Orbital involvement occurs in about 9% of cases of advanced SIP. However, there is no report of cases of a benign tumor that invaded the adjacent soft tissues. Therefore, our objective is to report an unusual case of SIP that bilaterally involved the nasal cavity and maxillar

The prevalence and location of the posterior superior alveolar artery in the maxillary sinus wall: A preliminary computed-cone beam study.

The lateral wall of the maxillary sinus is supplied by the posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA). It may be affected by trauma, pathology, or surgery performed to access or correct any fracture involving the maxillary sinus. This study analysed the prevalence and distance of the PSAA from the floor of the maxillary sinus in selected Southeast Asian patients. Methods: This is a cross sectional study conducted using cone-beam computed tomographic images of 83 dentate patients with a mean age of 38.3 years. Results: One hundred sixty-six maxillary sinuses of 54 males and 29 females were evalu

Impact of Hard Palate Angulation Caused by Septal Deviation on Maxillary Sinus Volume.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of hard palate angulation caused by septal deviation on the volume of the maxillary sinus. METHODS: Coronal computed tomographic (CT) scans of 1568 patients aged from 18 to 60 were examined. CT scans of 402 patients were included in the study. On these scans, the maxillary sinus volume, the angle of the nasal septal deviation, and the angulation of the hard palate were calculated using the ImageJ software. Each maxillary sinus volume was statistically compared with each other and with those in the control group. Correlations between palatal angulation and

Scintigraphic, histologic, and histomorphometric analyses of bovine bone mineral and autogenous bone mixture in sinus floor augmentation: a randomized controlled trial--results after 4 months of healing.

PURPOSE: To test our null hypothesis stating that the mixture of autogenous cortical bone scrapings and bovine bone mineral (BBM) in a ratio of 1:4, compared with BBM alone, would have no significant effect on new bone formation 4 months after maxillary sinus floor augmentation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-four patients presenting with alveolar bone height of less than 5 mm in the narrowest zone between the sinus floor and alveolar crest were randomly assigned to 2 treatment groups in this randomized controlled trial. We augmented 12 maxillary sinuses with a mixture of BBM and cortical autog

Evaluation of anatomical variants and pathological findings of the maxillary sinus prior to sinus floor elevation: A Cone Beam CT retrospective study in 660 patients.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary sinuses may present a wide spectrum of anatomical variations and pathological lesions whose recognition is mandatory for the clinician, especially prior to any surgical intervention in the area, such as in cases of sinus floor elevation. The goal of this study was the evaluation, mapping and prevalence of sinus anatomical variants and pathoses in Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scans of dental patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 660 CBCT examinations of adult patients involving both sinuses were obtained (between 2017 and 2023) and analyzed. The following anatomic varia

Combined Aplasia of Frontal and Sphenoid Sinuses: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The paranasal sinuses are a group of four paired air-filled spaces located within the bony skull; maxillary, frontal, sphenoid, and ethmoid sinuses. Paranasal sinuses aplasia is a rare condition that is mainly confined to the frontal sinus unilaterally. Combined aplasia of multiple sinuses along with hypoplasia of other sinuses is extremely rare. This rare case should be considered in mind before scheduling any endoscopic sinus surgery to prevent complications during these surgeries. CASE PRESENTATION: A 13-year-old male patient presented to our ENT clinic complai

Caldwell-Luc operation without inferior meatal antrostomy: a retrospective study of 50 cases.

PURPOSE: In the standard Caldwell-Luc operation, an inferior meatal antrostomy is performed to promote sinus drainage. However, inferior meatal antrostomy has been criticized for its additional operation time and wound, early loss of the opening, and risk of injury to the nasolacrimal duct. This study retrospectively reviewed the results of the Caldwell-Luc operation without inferior meatal antrostomy in the treatment of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis or odontogenic sinus disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The records of 50 patients who had an odontogenic sinus disease and underwent the Caldwell…

Chronic osteitic rhinosinusitis as a manifestation of cystic fibrosis: A case report.

A 28-year-old male patient with a history of cystic fibrosis (CF) was referred to the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine for an evaluation of a cystic lesion in the right maxilla using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). CF is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by an abnormal production of viscous mucus, affecting the mucociliary clearance. The CBCT scan revealed a large cystic lesion in the right maxilla extending from the right maxillary second molar to the midline in the region of the right central incisor with a significant buccal expansion. Further evaluation

A clinical and radiological study of maxillary antrum in lepromatous leprosy.

Seventy consecutive patients having multibacillary leprosy were questioned about symptoms of nasal involvement and sinusitis. Complete otorhinolaryngeal examination was carried out in all these patients and they were subjected to radiographic examination of paranasal sinuses. Radiological abnormality of maxillary antrum was found in 40 (57%) patients. Radiological changes were unilateral in 25 and bilateral in 15 patients. Localised or generalised mucosal thickening was the most common finding, followed by diffuse opacity. The development of radiological changes in maxillary antrum correlated

Periantral soft-tissue infiltration and its relevance to the early detection of invasive fungal sinusitis: CT and MR findings.

PURPOSE: Our goal was to illustrate the relevance of periantral soft-tissue infiltration to the early diagnosis of invasive fungal sinusitis and to describe variations in the appearance of normal periantral soft tissues. METHODS: We reviewed two cases of pathologically proved invasive maxillary fungal sinusitis in which the sole imaging finding suggestive of invasive disease was periantral soft-tissue infiltration. Variations in the CT appearance of normal periantral soft tissues were studied in 112 patients by assessing the appearance of the fat planes along the anterior and posterior bony a
