Subjective and objective cognitive function among older adults with a history of traumatic brain injury: A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is extremely common across the lifespan and is an established risk factor for dementia. The cognitive profile of the large and growing population of older adults with prior TBI who do not have a diagnosis of dementia, however, has not been well described. Our aim was to describe the cognitive profile associated with prior TBI exposure among community-dwelling older adults without dementia-an understudied but potentially vulnerable population. METHODS AND FINDINGS: In this population-based cohort study, we studied 984 community-dwelling older adults (ag

Cognitive Recovery After Stroke: Memory.

Memory impairment occurs in over a third of patients after symptomatic stroke. Memory deficits rarely occur in isolation but are an important component of the poststroke cognitive syndrome because of the strong relationship with the risk of poststroke dementia. In this review, we summarize available data on impairment of episodic memory, with a particular emphasis on the natural history of memory impairment after stroke and the factors influencing trajectory informed by an updated systematic review. We next discuss the pathophysiology of memory impairment and mechanisms of both decline and rec

Memory rehabilitation of an amnesic patient following limbic encephalitis and a role of family members: a case report.

We describe problems in daily living that arose in a 46-year-old man with severe amnesia following limbic encephalitis. Amnesic symptoms changed from stage I (difficulty in memory retention) to stage II (loss of continuity of memory) and finally to stage III (paramnesia and confused sequence of events), significantly affecting his ability to function. Questionnaire response assessment, directly observed behavior, neuropsychological testing, and especially interviewing permitted qualitative assessment of clinical changes, promoted patient insight into the memory disturbance, and enhanced motiva

Effects of white matter hyperintensities distribution and clustering on late-life cognitive impairment.

White matter hyperintensities (WMH) are a key hallmark of subclinical cerebrovascular disease and are known to impair cognition. Here, we parcellated WMH using a novel system that segments WMH based on both lobar regions and distance from the ventricles, dividing the brain into a coordinate system composed of 36 distinct parcels ('bullseye' parcellation), and then investigated the effect of distribution on cognition using two different analytic approaches. Data from a well characterized sample of healthy older adults (58 to 84 years) who were free of dementia were included. Cognition was evalu

The locus of recognition memory signals in human cortex depends on the complexity of the memory representations.

According to a "Swiss Army Knife" model of the brain, cognitive functions such as episodic memory and face perception map onto distinct neural substrates. In contrast, representational accounts propose that each brain region is best explained not by which specialized function it performs, but by the type of information it represents with its neural firing. In a functional magnetic resonance imaging study, we asked whether the neural signals supporting recognition memory fall mandatorily within the medial temporal lobes (MTL), traditionally thought the seat of declarative memory, or whether the

Pattern separation memory requires Cerebellin 4 - Neogenin 1 signaling at dentate gyrus synapses.

The ability to avoid confusion between similar episodic memories enables organismal survival and fitness. This evolutionarily conserved differentiation process of memories as distinct representations is known as pattern separation. A central role for the entorhinal cortex→dentate gyrus (EC→DG) circuit in pattern separation memory is well established, but the molecular mechanisms that enable this circuit to mediate pattern separation memory are incompletely understood. We previously found that a trans-synaptic protein complex formed by presynaptic Cerebellin-4 and postsynaptic Neogenin-1 is sel

Reinstatement of memory representations for lifelike events over the course of a week.

When we remember an event, the content of that memory is represented across the brain. Detailed memory retrieval is thought to involve the reinstatement of those representations. Functional MRI combined with representational similarity analyses (RSA) of spatial patterns of brain activity has revealed reinstatement of recently-experienced events throughout a core memory retrieval network. In the present study, participants were scanned while they watched, immediately retrieved and then retrieved after a week, 24 short videos. Following the delayed retrieval, they freely recalled all videos outs

Odor memory: taking stock.

This review discusses the state of knowledge in odor memory within the framework of mainstream memory research. Experimental findings are structured around prevailing theoretical distinctions in the study of memory proper, including semantic-episodic memory and implicit-explicit memory. Unaided odor-identification performance is found to be approximately 40%-50% of the total stimulus set presented to Ss, although performance approaches the limit of memorial discrimination if Ss are given label training with feedback. Odor identification is conceptualized as a task with 3 major components and w

Bidirectional Associations Between Adiposity and Cognitive Function and Mediation by Brain Morphology in the ABCD Study.

IMPORTANCE: Most epidemiologic studies examine the brain as an outcome in relation to adiposity (ie, the brain-as-outcome perspective), but it is also a potential risk factor associated with adiposity accumulation over time (ie, the brain-as-risk factor perspective). The bidirectionality hypothesis has not been fully explored in adolescent samples previously. OBJECTIVE: To assess bidirectional associations between adiposity and cognitive function in youth and test mediational pathways through brain morphology (specifically the lateral prefrontal cortex [LPFC]), lifestyle behaviors, and blood

Impaired Cognition and Illness Beliefs in Breast Cancer Survivors Comorbid With Diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer survivors (BCS) are at greater risk for cognitive impairment due to their cancer status, treatment history, and frequent comorbid illnesses such as diabetes (DM). Given the critical role of cognition in illness beliefs, cognitive impairments can contribute to inaccurate risk perceptions, misunderstanding of information, and limited symptom awareness, which have significant implications for disease self-management. In a cohort of BCS with DM, we investigated the relationship between cognitive impairments and illness beliefs about DM. METHODS: We measured illness belie

Association between glycated hemoglobin A1c levels, control status, and cognitive function in type 2 diabetes: a prospective cohort study.

Cognitive impairment (CI) is a common complication in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but its relationship with long-term glycemic control remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the associations between mean hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels, HbA1c control status, HbA1c fluctuations, and CI in Chinese adults aged 45 years and older with T2DM using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). A total of 797 participants with HbA1c measurements from 2011 to 2015 and cognitive function assessments in 2018 were included. Logistic regression models and

Two what, two where, visual cortical streams in humans.

ROLLS, E. T. Two What, Two Where, Visual Cortical Streams in Humans. NEUROSCI BIOBEHAV REV 2024. Recent cortical connectivity investigations lead to new concepts about 'What' and 'Where' visual cortical streams in humans, and how they connect to other cortical systems. A ventrolateral 'What' visual stream leads to the inferior temporal visual cortex for object and face identity, and provides 'What' information to the hippocampal episodic memory system, the anterior temporal lobe semantic system, and the orbitofrontal cortex emotion system. A superior temporal sulcus (STS) 'What' visual stream

Deficits in Mitochondrial Spare Respiratory Capacity Contribute to the Neuropsychological Changes of Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is diagnosed using neuropsychological testing, supported by amyloid and tau biomarkers and neuroimaging abnormalities. The cause of neuropsychological changes is not clear since they do not correlate with biomarkers. This study investigated if changes in cellular metabolism in AD correlate with neuropsychological changes. Fibroblasts were taken from 10 AD patients and 10 controls. Metabolic assessment included measuring total cellular ATP, extracellular lactate, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), mitochondrial respiration and glycolytic function. All participants

The impact of volunteering on cognition and cognitive decline in older diverse cohorts: KHANDLE and STAR.

INTRODUCTION: Volunteering is linked to cognitive benefits in aging, but evidence in diverse populations is limited. METHODS: We examined volunteering and cognition in Kaiser Healthy Aging and Diverse Life Experiences Study/Study of Healthy Aging in African Americans participants (N = 2789) with unimpaired cognition at baseline. Volunteering and frequency of volunteering in the past year at baseline were self-reported, and cognition (executive function [EF], verbal episodic memory [VEM]) was assessed with the Spanish and English Neuropsychological Assessment Scale across 4 waves (range of fol

Differences in hippocampal subfield volume are seen in phenotypic variants of early onset Alzheimer's disease.

The most common presentation of early onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD - defined as symptom onset <65 years) is with progressive episodic memory impairment - amnestic or typical Alzheimer's disease (tAD). However, EOAD is notable for its phenotypic heterogeneity, with posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) - characterised by prominent higher-order visual processing deficits and relative sparing of episodic memory - the second most common canonical phenotype. The hippocampus, which comprises a number of interconnected anatomically and functionally distinct subfields, is centrally involved in Alzheimer

Cognitive dispersion in the Alzheimer's disease spectrum.

OBJECTIVES: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) may represent the earliest observable stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet identifying individuals at risk of progressing remains challenging. Cognitive dispersion, or intra-individual variability (IIV-D), may serve as a sensitive early marker. This study examined IIV-D across diagnostic groups, focusing on SCD and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) progressors (SCD-p, aMCI-p; progressing to a more advanced disease stage) versus non-progressors (SCD-np, aMCI-np; not progressing to a more advanced stage). We expected greater IIV-D across g

Accelerated long-term forgetting after TIA or minor stroke: A more sensitive measure for detecting subtle memory dysfunction?

Cognitive changes after minor stroke or TIA have been reported, with studies describing a 'vascular' cognitive profile with spared episodic memory. Still, many patients also report memory complaints. Studies using long-term forgetting paradigms have detected memory impairment after prolonged intervals in contrast to standard delayed testing in other patient groups. This study examined whether accelerated long-term forgetting (ALF) is present in patients with minor stroke or TIA by comparing one-week delayed recall and recognition with the performance of a healthy control group. Results reveale

Intrinsic functional connectivity in medial temporal lobe networks is associated with susceptibility to misinformation.

Memory is notoriously fallible and susceptible to misinformation. Yet little is known about the underlying cognitive and neural mechanisms that render individuals vulnerable to this type of false memory. The current experiments take an individual differences approach to examine whether susceptibility to misinformation reflects stable underlying factors related to memory retrieval. In Study 1, we report for the first time the existence of substantial individual variability in susceptibility to misinformation in the context of repeated memory retrieval, when the misinformation effect is most pro

Dissociating and linking divergent effects of emotion on cognition: insights from current research and emerging directions.

This century has witnessed unprecedented increasing interest in the investigation of emotion-cognition interactions and the associated neural mechanisms. The present review emphasizes the need to consider the various factors that can influence enhancing and impairing effects of emotion on cognition, in studies of both healthy and clinical groups. First, we discuss advances in understanding the circumstances in which emotion enhances or impairs cognition at different levels, both within the same processes (e.g., perception, episodic memory) and across different processes (i.e., episodic vs. wor
