Models of adolescent psychopathology: childhood risk and the transition to adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between DSM-III disorder in adolescence (age 15 years) and DSM-III-R disorder in early adulthood (age 18 years), in relation to a history of behavior problems or disorder, other family and individual characteristics, and events commonly associated with the transition to adulthood. METHOD: The sample came from a New Zealand birth cohort selected from the general population. Data were obtained from ages 3 to 18 years for 890 of those enrolled. RESULTS: For both males and females, disorder at age 15 was strongly predicted by histories of early mental healt

Item Response Theory to Evaluate Prolonged Grief Disorder in the DSM-5-TR Among Young Adults.

Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) has been included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR). However, the factor structure of PGD has been contested and few studies have tested competing models or assessed the item-level fit of PGD symptoms included in the DSM-5-TR using Item Response Theory (IRT). Therefore, this study addressed these gaps using IRT. The results indicated that a modified three-factor model of the PGD criteria demonstrated the best model fit. IRT analyses identified items in the PGD criteria provided little information o

An Experiencer, An Animal or An Object? Erection Salience Decreases Men's Perceived Agency.

Three experiments investigated the influence of penile erection on ascriptions of mental capabilities to men. Drawing on sexual objectification literature and the distinction between agency and experience in mind perception, three competing predictions were formulated. The mind redistribution hypothesis assumed that penile erection would lower agency and heighten experience attributions, the animalistic dehumanization hypothesis predicted the decrease in agency, but not experience, and the literal objectification hypothesis implied the simultaneous decrease in both agency and experience. In Ex

The burden of living with and caring for a suicidal family member.

BACKGROUND: The family has a primary role in caring for family members who are suicidal and in the prevention of future suicide. However, the impact that suicidal behaviour has on these family members is poorly understood. AIM: To explore the lived experiences of participants who cared for suicidal family members. METHODS: Eighteen participants were interviewed using a short topic guide. Responses were digitally recorded and transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: One overarching theme: "Hard work for the whole family" and four sub-themes: (i) Family burden, (ii) competi

Age, training, and previous experience predict race performance in long-distance inline skaters, not anthropometry.

The association of characteristics of anthropometry, training, and previous experience with race time in 84 recreational, long-distance, inline skaters at the longest inline marathon in Europe (111 km), the Inline One-eleven in Switzerland, was investigated to identify predictor variables for performance. Age, duration per training unit, and personal best time were the only three variables related to race time in a multiple regression, while none of the 16 anthropometric variables were related. Anthropometric characteristics seem to be of no importance for a fast race time in a long-distance i

Isolated aglossia in a six year old child presenting with impaired speech: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: The most mobile organ of the body, the tongue is associated with various congenital anomalies; most of which are in association with many other systemic abnormalities. Rarely do they occur in isolation. Isolated aglossia, that we presented, is one of the more rare presentations. CASE PRESENTATION: Our patient is a 6-year-old male child of Asiatic origin from Kashmir (India), who was physically well built and mentally sound and presented with history of impaired speech. The patient had normal velopharangeal competence but absence of tongue which was replaced by a small mucus memb

Defining new frameworks for psychosocial intervention.

The personal experiences of individuals with schizophrenia have been neglected in the psychiatric literature. Disappointingly, ideas about the impact of the illness on the experience of "self" have either been devalued or based primarily on the impressions of theorists rarely collaborating with individuals with the illness. Rather than making assumptions about the subjective experience of mental illness, we must enter a meaningful dialogue with our clients so that they can tell us about their situations using their own voices. This study presents life-history interviews with 15 individuals dia

Knowledge of mental disorders in primary healthcare nurses in the Western Cape, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders remain a global health burden. The integration of mental health services into primary healthcare (PHC) can contribute to reduction of this burden. However, studies have reported PHC nurses' lack of knowledge of mental disorders, which leads to their negative attitudes towards people with mental disorders preventing them from seeking help. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to assess the knowledge levels of PHC nurses regarding mental disorders in the Western Cape, South Africa. METHOD: A quantitative descriptive survey was conducted. A self-administered q

Perceived Collective Efficacy and Parenting Competence: The Roles of Quality of Life and Hope.

Parents' perceptions of their parenting competence predict successful implementation of parenting tasks and contribute to their interest and involvement in parenting and to their children's development. Thus, identifying factors that contribute to parents' perceptions of parenting competence can help inform efforts to promote children's safety and well-being. The present study employs social disorganization theory to examine the relationship between collective efficacy and parents' sense of competence, measured along two dimensions: parental efficacy and parental satisfaction. It examines the

The Mental Capacity Act 2005: Considerations for obtaining consent for dental treatment.

The Mental Capacity Act 2005 provides a legal framework within which specific decisions must be made when an individual lacks the mental capacity to make such decisions for themselves. With an increasingly aged, medically complex and in some cases socially isolated population presenting for dental care, dentists need to have a sound understanding of the appropriate management of patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment when they present in the dental setting. Patients with acute symptoms requiring urgent care and un-befriended patients present additional complexities. In these situat

Frequency of leisure activities and depressive symptomatology in elderly people: the moderating role of rumination.

BACKGROUND: The positive effects of leisure activities on depressive symptomatology are well known. However, the extent to which emotional regulation variables moderate that relationship has scarcely been studied, especially in older people. The aim of this study is to analyze the moderating role of rumination in the relation between leisure activities and depressive symptoms. METHODS: Participants in this study were 311 people, aged 60 to 90 years (mean age: 71.27 years; SD: 6.99; 71.7% women). We evaluated depressive symptomatology, frequency of leisure activities, and rumination. We carrie

Falling short: recruiting elderly individuals for a fall study.

Despite the importance of movement and activity indicators in predicting the risk of falls in older adults, collection and analysis of such data are limited. The dearth may result from recruitment challenges faced by fall-related studies that capture data on movement and activity in older adults. This article addresses recruitment and sampling methodology issues and draws attention to the gap in best practices left by previous literature. Authors conducted a systematic review of methods used to recruit elderly individuals for "activity-related fall studies" that assessed subjects' movement and

Assessment of capacity for medical decision making.

Determination of a patient's capacity for medical decision making can be simple or complex, depending on the issue being considered; likewise, the degree of capacity required to make decisions varies with the complexity of the situation. A capacity examination is a focused and impartial evaluation of mental status and medical, surgical, psychiatric, and psychosocial histories. The examination is composed of several basic steps, beginning with an assessment of the patient's ability to communicate, followed by determination of his or her understanding of the proposed care, followed by the patien

Neuropsychological evaluation in primary care.

Referring a patient to a neuropsychologist for evaluation provides a level of rigorous assessment of brain function that often cannot be obtained in other ways. The neuropsychologist integrates information from the patient's medical history, laboratory tests, and imaging studies; an in-depth interview; collateral information from the family and other sources; and standardized assessment instruments to draw conclusions about diagnosis, prognosis, and response to therapy. Family physicians can use this information in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with depression, dementia, concussion,

Is informed consent in trauma a lost cause? A prospective evaluation of acutely injured patients' ability to give consent.

BACKGROUND: Obtaining informed consent in acute trauma patients is often impossible, forcing investigators to abandon important projects. To better understand the likelihood of -- and barriers to -- informed consent in trauma patients, we evaluated when and how consent is possible in acutely injured patients. STUDY DESIGN: Over a 7-month period, at a large, urban, adult Level I trauma center, we prospectively assessed each patient's ability to give hypothetical informed consent. Patients were considered consentable when they were alert, unintoxicated, and stable, with no prohibitive language
