Outcomes of ultralarge-diameter femoral heads used in metal-on-metal (MOM) total hip arthroplasty (THA) are relatively unknown. This study reports on early failures of the ASR XL (Depuy, Warsaw, Ind) and assesses whether a correlation with cup positioning exists. A retrospective review of 70 consecutive MOM THAs with ultralarge-diameter femoral head and monoblock acetabular component was conducted. Minimum follow-up was 24 months. We present, for the first time, a detailed damage assessment of a large-diameter metal-on-metal (L-MOM) hip prosthesis to show the extent of surface damage that can occur in a patient after multiple dislocations. The patient was a man (51 years old) who dislocated 8 times and was finally revised at 27 months. Dynamic restructuring of the Ag(111) surface occurs during the reaction of sulfur dioxide with Ag(111)-p(4 x 4)-O at 300 K, resulting in the incorporation of added silver atoms into the unit cells of both adsorbed sulfite and sulfate. This result clearly demonstrates that incorporation of metal atoms into the structures of adsorbates and reaction intermediates is not restricted to more open, higher free energy single crystal planes. These observations indicate that the participation of added metal atoms must be considered in the theoretical treatment of metal catalyzed reactions.

Secondary transporters of citrate in complex with metal ions belong to the bacterial CitMHS family, about which little is known. The transport of metal-citrate complexes in Streptomyces coelicolor has been investigated. The best cofactor for citrate uptake in Streptomyces coelicolor is Fe(3+), but uptake was also noted for Ca(2+), Pb(2+), Ba(2+), and Mn(2+). In 54 patients (1 man and 53 women), 55 hips underwent primary metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty (Metasul) with a Wagner standard cup (44-48 mm in outer diameter) and were followed for a minimum of 3 years. All patients received the same type of cementless femoral component (Natural Hip Stem) and femoral head (28 mm in diameter).
