Current detection methods of Demodex mite density in facial erythema are semi-invasive or operator-dependent. We developed and evaluated a deep learning model (DemodexNet) for predicting Demodex mite density and assessed its impact on the diagnostic performance of dermatologists. This study included 1,124 patients with facial erythema who underwent Demodex mite density measurement at two referral hospitals between January 2016 and August 2023. DemodexNet achieved area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values of 0.823-0.865 in internal testing, with lower values observed in the

PURPOSE: Demodex blepharitis, often overlooked in ocular surface disease, involves Demodex mites, prevalent ectoparasites on human skin. Current treatments may not effectively eliminate these mites, prompting a need for targeted therapies. Lotilaner, an antiparasitic agent, shows promise. This systematic review and meta-analysis assesses 0.25% lotilaner ophthalmic solution's efficacy in reducing Demodex mite populations and its impact on ocular surface inflammation in Demodex blepharitis patients.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed in the PubMed and Cochrane Library data

PURPOSE: Prevention of ocular surface (OS) Demodex infestation plays an important role in OS hygiene and variety of factors may be associated with it, in which diabetes mellitus (DM) or dry eye disease (DED) has caught the attention of most scholars. However, there has been no research on whether there was a potential interaction between DM and DED in the process of OS Demodex infestation. This cross-sectional study was implemented in Zhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University.
METHODS: Ophthalmologic interviews, questionnaires, and examinations were conducted. Factors including general

BACKGROUND: Canine demodicosis is classified as localised or generalised according to the extent of the disease. Chronic generalised demodicosis is a difficult skin disease to treat and unlikely to resolve without therapy. This laboratory study compared the efficacy of two topical spot-on medications, fluralaner or a combination of imidacloprid and moxidectin, against naturally acquired generalised demodicosis in dogs.
METHODS: Sixteen client-owned dogs with naturally acquired generalised demodicosis were randomly allocated to 1 of 2 study groups consisting of 8 dogs each. On Day 0, dogs in 1

Rhinonyssids are obligate haematophagous mites that parasitize the nasal cavity of vertebrates, and occur in a wide range of birds worldwide. Two species of nasal mites are known to occur in penguins: Rhinonyssus sphenisci, which has been recorded from Humboldt and Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus humboldti and S. magellanicus, respectively), and Rhinonyssus schelli, which has been recorded in Adélie and Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae and P. papua, respectively). We examined the nasal cavity of African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) that died while under care at a rehabilitation centre (N

Our study reports a case of acarodermatitis caused by Haemolaelaps casalis. By morphological observations, the mites seized were identified as Haemolaelaps casalis (deutonymph) which could attack humans resulting in acarodermatitis characterized with the symptoms of papules and blisters in different degrees. The patient was treated with 15% calamine lotion and anti-inflammatory and antipruritic drugs. Meanwhile, the mites were eliminated in the bedroom. After the treatment for one week, the patient was cured. Haemolaelaps casalis, which had been found in the indoor mattress, could attack human

The abundance and diversity of parasites vary among different populations of host species. In some host-parasite associations, much of the variation seems to depend on the identity of the host species, whereas in other cases it is better explained by local environmental conditions. The few parasite taxa investigated to date make it difficult to discern any general pattern governing large-scale variation in abundance or diversity. Here, we test whether the abundance and diversity of gamasid mites parasitic on small mammals across different regions of the Palaearctic are determined mainly by hos

Approximately 90% of freshly imported macaques and other Old World Monkeys are known to be infected with respiratory mites. The lung associated pigments are integral components of pulmonary acariasis in Old World Monkeys; at least three distinctive pigmental bodies are identified in association with lung mite infection. Two major components of pigments are recently identified as silica by using elemental analysis using a high voltage electron microscope and an energy-dispersive X-ray analysis technique. Since a limited number of infected monkey lung tissues and associated pigments can be exami

Field efficacy of moxidectin, a macrocyclic lactone endectocide, was evaluated in cattle naturally infested with Chorioptes bovis and Sarcoptes scabiei. Eight animals were allocated to two groups of four animals each, based on parasitological and clinical status. Animals of the treated group received one subcutaneous injection of injectable moxidectin at 0.2 mg kg-1 body weight on Day 0. Individuals of the control group received emergency treatment of a single injection of moxidectin at 0.2 mg kg-1 body weight on Day 28. Efficacy was assessed by (a) taking skin samples from each animal on Days

Immunoblotting with defined antigens and antisera revealed extensive and nearly complete antigenic cross-reactivity between Psoroptes spp. mites from a bighorn sheep, a mule deer, a cow, and a rabbit. Antigenic differences were not detected between mites from the sympatric bighorn sheep and mule deer. However, minor antigenic differences between mites from the cow and rabbit suggested that these mites were distinct from each other, as well as from the mites from the bighorn sheep and mule deer. These results are consistent with earlier morphologic studies of these populations of mites and prov

As llamas become more common in North America, veterinarians will be called on ever more frequently to deal with their dermatologic problems. Adherence to the basic tenets of the thorough dermatologic work up, including history, physical examination, skin scrapings, cytological examinations, fungal culture, skin biopsies, and assessing response to judiciously chosen trial therapies will offer the best opportunity of arriving at proper diagnoses. Special attention must be paid to the fact that llama skin bears some histological differences that may prove confusing to the uninitiated. A mild deg

Scabies has become a common disease, not sexually transmitted but transmitted in households. Although it is also known to cause an epidemic in hospitals for the aged patients or residential homes, no effective treatment was taken for it at the present time. From January 1985 to December 1992, 424 patients with scabies (249 males and 175 females) visited the Dermatological clinic of Nippon Medical School Main Hospital. In these cases, only 13 patients (3.1%) were recognized as having STD. The sources of infestation were unclear in most cases where the disease was transmitted in households, whic

Amitraz has been shown to be successful in controlling mange and lice infestations on pigs which had failed to respond to diazinon and gamma-BHC, respectively, and by the use of a prophylactic programme to maintain pig herds mange free. In addition, trials have indicated the elimination of psoroptic mange from sheep by applying the compound to the animal using either conventional or less conventional methods of treatment. Mixed infections of Chorioptes spp., Psoroptes spp. and Sarcoptes spp., in cattle have also been controlled using spray applications of amitraz, where in some cases organochl

Demodex mite infestation of the palpebral conjunctiva as focal inflammatory nodule has been not reported. A 46-year-old man presented with lower palpebral conjunctival nodules in his left eye. Slit-lamp examination showed focal inflammatory nodules at the inferior palpebral conjunctiva accompanied by conjunctival hyperemia and purulent secretion. Excisional biopsy of this lesion was performed. Pathological evaluations revealed inflammatory granuloma associated with Demodex species in the palpebral conjunctiva. This is the first report of Demodex-related palpebral conjunctival inflammatory nodu

Ectoparasites inhabiting the skin are responsible for significant problems in small mammals, owing to ingestion of blood, lymph, sebaceous secretions, and scavenging skin debris, as well as a hypersensitivity reaction to parasite antigen resulting in severe pruritus and subsequent self-trauma-induced lesions. In general practice, the most common diagnosis in exotic pets is an unspecified mite infestation, but other ectoparasites such as lice, fleas, insects, or even helminths may cause dermatologic diseases. If treatment with topical insecticides is planned, the small mammal should be isolated

Pseudoscabies, i.e. infestation of human skin with animal mites may occasionally occur and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of pruritic and papular skin disease. We report here on a 52-year-old woman with pseudoscabies or canine scabies (Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis), transmitted by indirect contact with a red fox in the urban area of Berlin. Red foxes may live in unhabited areas of metropolitan large cities, i.e. in garages, car wrecks and cellars. Full remission of the prolonged and pruritic rush was seen after topical administration of lindane together with systemic cortic

Scabies is a mite infestation caused by Sarcoptes scabiei. Varieties of this organism can produce disease on 40 different species of animal, including humans. The organisms mature, burrow, and lay eggs. The newly hatched larvae mature and mate on the skin, causing itching and excoriated papules on humans, and mange, with crusts and oozing, on hair-bearing animals. Treatment with the gamma isomer of hexachlorobenzene or with pyrethrins is effective. Care must be taken that all infected or exposed individuals are treated. The role of fomites in the transmission of the disease is not clear. Most

Keratotic scabies (KS) (Norwegian scabies) is a rare variant of Sarcoptes scabeii infestation and is characterized by hyperkeratosis and crusting and by the presence of millions of mites in the horny layer of the skin. KS may be associated with underlying diseases, e.g. immune deficiency states and lymphoreticular disorders, or may occur in neglected or normal patients. We review the literature and present reports on 2 Black South African patients affected by KS. One was mentally defective; the other, submitted to extensive investigations, showed no abnormalities. This is, to the best of our k

Though the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana has shown to be efficacious for managing Dermanyssus gallinae infestations, its delivery as liquid formulation poses concerns related to environmental stability and efficacy. To overcome such concerns, here we proposed a hydrogel matrix based on hydroxyethyl-cellulose (HEC) for delivering B. bassiana to control D. gallinae. Nymph and adult mites were exposed to a hydrogel matrix or filter papers containing B. bassiana (107 conidia/mL), with and without a pre-incubation period of 4 days at 25 °C (treated groups). As control groups, mites wer
