INTRODUCTION: Blunt trauma as a cause of pneumoperitoneum is less frequent and its occurrence without a ruptured viscus is rarely seen.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a case of blunt neck trauma in which a motorcycle rider hit a fixed object causing severe laryngotracheal injury. The patient developed pneumothorax bilaterally and had pneumoperitoneum despite no injury to the internal viscus. Bilateral chest tube drainage and abdominal exploratory laparotomy was performed.
CONCLUSION: Free air in the abdomen after blunt traumatic neck injury is very rare. If pneumoperitoneum is suspected in

Motorcycle fatalities have more than doubled in the United States since 1997--highlighting the need to better understand the many interrelated factors that determine motorcyclists' crash-injury severities. In this paper, using a detailed crash database from the state of Indiana, we estimate probabilistic models of motorcyclists' injury severities in single- and multi-vehicle crashes. Nested logit (estimated with full information maximum likelihood) and standard multinomial logit model results show a wide-range of factors significantly influence injury-severity probabilities. Key findings show

Horner's syndrome is the triad of miosis, ptosis, and anhidrosis, resulting from disruption of the sympathetic pathways. This article describes an uncommon case of Horner's syndrome in a 22-year-old man after blunt trauma to the neck and chest without carotid artery dissection. The patient was brought to the emergency service after motorcycle fall. Neurologic examination revealed a patient presenting the score 15 at Glasgow Coma Scale. The left eyelid was 1-2 mm lower than the right. Carotid Doppler and angiotomography were undertaken and revealed no abnormalities of the carotid artery. CT dis

Pulmonary embolism is not uncommonly encountered in orthopedic patients with high risks, such as prolonged immobility, obesity, past or family history of thromboembolism, pelvic and long bone fractures. Here we report a young male patient with a residual cerebral arteriovenous malformation post-craniotomy suffered from acute severe hypoxemia after sustaining a simple fracture of the left femur shaft from a motorcycle accident. The emergent surgery was deferred in view of suspectable pulmonary embolism. Under supportive treatment, the condition spontaneously resolved, and the surgery was later

PURPOSE: To report endovascular repair of bilateral internal carotid arteries (ICAs) in a youth following an accident.
CASE REPORT: A 17-year-old boy presented with dissection of both ICAs after a motorcycle accident. The lesions started 2 cm above the bifurcation and continued upward to the siphon, with normal flow into the circle of Willis. Surgical repair was excluded due to the critical clinical condition of the patient and owing to the anatomical extent of the dissection. Carotid Wallstent endoprostheses were deployed bilaterally to repair the dissected segments of the ICAs. After 13 mon

We report a rare case of four separate gastric ruptures resulting from blunt abdominal trauma that were successfully repaired by primary closure. A 22-year-old man injured in a motorcycle accident was admitted to our hospital where physical and radiological examinations confirmed the need for abdominal exploration. Laparotomy revealed four full-thickness lacerations in the anterior wall of the stomach. The lacerations were repaired primarily by a two-layer closure. The patient recovered gradually, and was discharged on hospital day 41, since when he has remained well. Although there has been n

A retrospective review of 20 free-tissue transfers for reconstruction of traumatic lower extremity wounds was undertaken. The wounds consisted of Gustilo type IIIb injuries resulting from motor vehicle accidents, falls, motorcycle and four-wheel, all-terrain vehicle accidents, and a laceration from a lawnmower blade. Fifty percent of the procedures were for open tibia fractures. The most common flap used was the rectus abdominis, followed by the latissimus dorsi, serratus anterior, and radial forearm. There were two major complications resulting in flap loss. Adequate and multiple debridements

This case study reports detailed phantom sensations in a 35-yr.-old man who had his C5 and C6 cervical nerve roots avulsed from the cord during a motorcycle accident at the age of 22 years. The subject, who was left with a paralyzed right deltoid muscle, anesthetic sensation along the upper lateral portion of the right arm, and absent right biceps reflex, became aware of phantom right arm and hand sensations a few months after the original injury. This finding--which has important implications for understanding the process involved in bodily perception as well as the development of these perce

Mechanical airway obstruction secondary to retropharyngeal haematoma is a life-threatening emergency and should be anticipated in all cervical spine injure patients regardless of the severity of trauma. Most retropharyngeal haematomas described in the literature have involved complicating factors such as anticoagulant therapy, tumour, aneurysm, infection or major cervical spine injury. Several authors have however described haematomas causing airway compromise with minor hyperextension injuries. We describe the case of a 19-year-old male who was involved in a motorcycle accident. He sustained

The prevalence of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in current motorcycle grand prix racers was investigated. A total of 44 riders was randomly recruited and underwent interview, otological examination and pure tone audiometry. The median age was 28 (range 18-37) years and median racing experience was 10 (range 2-21) years. Twenty riders (45%) had hearing losses greater than expected for age matched controls. Not surprisingly this hearing deficit tended to increase with racing experience (r = 0.5, t = 2.51, 19 d.f., P < 0.05). Only 17 riders (39%) were regular users of earplugs and only nine h

An autopsy case of middle cerebral artery occlusion following closed head injury is reported. A 16-year-old laborer received head injuries in a motorcycle-automobile accident. On first examination at the time of admission, semi-coma, left-sided hemiplegia and other focal cerebral signs were evident. Roentgenographic examination revealed fractures of the skull. A CT scan of the head 24 h after injury revealed a massive right-sided cerebral infarct with midline shift. On the 4th day, angiography showed tapering occlusion of the right internal carotid artery at the top of the 3rd cervical vertebr

Tricuspid regurgitation due to nonpenetrating trauma occurred in a 60-year-old male patient who had received chest trauma in a motorcycle accident. He was admitted because of shortness of breath and palpitation on exertion. On admission physical examinations revealed pulsated and dilated jugular veins, hepatomegaly, and systolic murmur. The chest X-ray film showed an enlarged heart and electrocardiograms revealed complete right bundle branch block. Echocardiography demonstrated systolic prolapse of the tricuspid anterior leaflet into the right atrium. Right atrial v wave pressure was 20 mmHg.

Two hundred forty consecutive patients admitted for operative treatment of an open fracture of the arm or leg were followed up prospectively for the development of fracture infection. The independent risk of fracture infection was increased in patients with grade IIIB or IIIC fractures, internal or external fixation, lower-leg fracture, any blood transfusion, or injuries resulting from motorcycle accidents or motor vehicle-pedestrian accidents. By stepwise multivariate logistic regression, the most significant risk factors were the grade of the fracture, internal or external fixation, and frac

A 60-year-old man was admitted to the emergency department in severe respiratory distress. He had been involved in a major motorcycle accident, 43 years earlier. A plain chest film showed a calcified mediastinal mass close to the aortic knob and displacement of the trachea and the opaque nasogastric tube to the right. The aortogram showed a 9-cm saccular aneurysm situated at the isthmus. At thoracotomy, the descending thoracic aorta was found to be transected through 60% of its circumference. The ends of the transected intimal and medial layers of the aortic wall were 6 cm apart and a false an

A bony lesion with identical radiological features was seen in the medial part of the distal femoral metaphysis in five patients who practised cross-country motorcycling. These findings suggested that the cause of the lesions was of muscular origin. The nature and physiopathogenesis of the lesions were studied by roentgenography, computerized tomography and analysis of anatomical specimens. The results of these procedures were compared to observations made peroperatively. The lesion was identified as a specific, dystrophic bony lacuna resulting from the action of the medial head of the gastroc

INTRODUCTION: Crashes are the result of a complex interaction of many factors. However, the severity of injuries is often influenced by road … s, and inappropriate barriers. Unchanneled access points on roads also pose risks for cyclists. For motorcycles, factors such as inadequate speed limitations, poor shoulder design, and obsolete or inadequate restraint systems are strongly associated with crash severity. Poor signage, illegible road markings, water accumulation, and inadequate transport stops …

BACKGROUND: This case report describes a young man with an intra-orbital foreign body (FB) in both eyes.
CASE REPORT: Intra-orbital FBs are rare, with few cases reported in the literature. This is because the orbit protects the globe from external forces, and the orbit is a closed cavity with one opening. This report details the case of a 28-year-old man who presented to the emergency unit with an 11-hour history of an intra-orbital FB. The patient was lying on a bench when a stationary motorcycle fell on him. He noticed that he was unable to open both eyes and was rushed to a peripheral hosp

BACKGROUND: Many upper-middle-income countries (UMICs), including Malaysia, continue to face low breast cancer (BC) screening rates and patients with delayed presentation of BC. This study investigated the role of beliefs about BC and use of screening (e.g. beliefs about whether or not screening reduced the possibility of dying from BC).
METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted in which a total of 813 women (aged ≥ 40 years old) were randomly selected and surveyed using the validated Awareness and Beliefs about Cancer (ABC) measure. The association between BC screening use, s
