As a direct consequence of exposure to microgravity, astronauts experience a set of physiological changes which can have serious medical implications when they return to earth. Most immediate and significant are the headward shift of body fluids and the removal of gravitational loading from bone and muscles, which lead to progressive changes in the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems. Cardiovascular adaptations result in an increased incidence of orthostatic intolerance (fainting) following flight, decreased cardiac output, and reduced capacity for exercise. Changes in the musculoskelet…

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a complex autoimmune rheumatic disease that specifically targets salivary and lachrymal glands. As such, patients typically had ocular and oral dryness and salivary gland swelling. Moreover, skin, nasal and vaginal dryness are frequently present. In addition to dryness, musculoskeletal pain and fatigue are the hallmarks of this disease and constitute the classic symptom triad presented by the vast majority of patients. Up to 30% to 50 % of patients with SS may present systemic disease; moreover, there is an increased risk for the development of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma

Joint hypermobility is a rarely recognised aetiology for focal or diffuse musculoskeletal symptoms. To assess the occurrence and importance of joint hypermobility in adult patients referred to a rheumatologist, we prospectively evaluated 130 consecutive new patients for joint hypermobility. Twenty women (15%) had joint hypermobility at three or more locations (greater than or equal to 5 points on a 9 point scale). Most patients with joint hypermobility had common musculoskeletal problems as the reason for referral. Two patients referred with a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis were correctly r

Disseminated blastomycosis can be a devastating disease, affecting multiple organ systems, including the musculoskeletal system. Osteomyelitis from disseminated disease can be difficult to eradicate but is particularly important to successfully manage in the load-bearing bones of the lower extremity. We present a staged protocol for salvage of blastomycotic calcaneal osteomyelitis in the presence of disseminated disease.

Hemangiopericytoma is a vascular tumor that is believed to arise from the Zimmermann's pericytes, smooth muscles cells localized around the blood vessels. This tumor presents as a slowly enlarging painless mass with a clear predilection for the musculoskeletal system. The aim of this work was to introduce a peculiar case of a tongue hemangiopericytoma managed by conservative surgical treatment.

Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic relapsing vasculitis with multifunctional pathogenesis. The mucocutaneous and ocular lesions are the commonest manifestations, but BD also affects the musculoskeletal, intestinal, cardiac, and central nervous system. BD therapy is based on the suppression of the inflammatory process, using immunomodulating and immunosuppressive agents. In selected cases, invasive procedures may be required.

Traumatic rhabdomyolysis is a clinical and biological syndrome secondary to lysis of striated muscle fibers resulting in extended musculoskeletal damage. An acute muscle damage causes the release of constituent elements of the sarcoplasmic reticulum, such as muscle enzymes, potassium, and myoglobin in plasma circulation; these conditions are at great risk of dangerous systemic complications for life such as hypovolemic shock, hyperkalemia, and acute kidney injury. We describe the case of a patient who suffered a severe musculoskeletal and vascular trauma with elevated creatine kinase values an

Many inflammatory, metabolic and infectious diseases affect the skin and joints. Most of these, such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythaematosus, are considered to be rheumatic conditions with secondary skin involvement. However, several primary cutaneous diseases are associated with arthritis and may even present with joint symptoms prior to cutaneous lesions. Common skin disorders, such as acne and psoriasis, have well-known musculoskeletal manifestations. Other less common conditions, such as dermatomyositis, multicentric reticulohistiocytosis, pyoderma gangrenosum, Sweet's sy

INTRODUCTION: Semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP1R) agonist, is clinically used for glycemic control and weight loss. However, it is still unclear whether it has any impact on bones and muscles. Does semaglutide have any impact on the musculoskeletal system of patients during its use, or does it have any negative effects on them? This study aims to assess the impact of GLP1R on bone and muscle using Mendelian Randomization.
METHODS: We employed expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) data for the GLP1R gene and combined it with genome-wide association studies (GWAS) data f…

Mucopolysaccharidosis is genetically determined disease caused by the deficiency of one of the lysosomal enzymes involved in the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) breakdown pathway. This metabolic block leads to the accumulation of GAG in various organs and tissues and affects nerve system, eyes, internal organs and musculoskeletal system. The reviewer of various articles on pubmed showed only one article about epidural anesthesia in patient with type I mucopolysaccharidosis. Our observation allows to consider that epidural anesthesia with ropivacaine is possible and safe in patients with type I mucopol…
