Music and binaural beat interventions for young adults: A systematic review of effects on anxiety, sleep, and cognition.

BACKGROUND: Young adults (19–24 years) commonly experience elevated rates of sleep disturbance, anxiety, and cognitive stress yet often underutilise formal mental-health services. Music therapy, binaural beats, and related auditory entrainment techniques offer accessible, non-pharmacological approaches that may enhance emotional regulation, cognition, and physiological stability. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review interventional clinical trials published over the past decade evaluating music- and rhythm-based auditory interventions for mental-health and cognitive outcomes in young adults. M…

Study on the path of combining music and digital health technology to promote the health of older adult groups.

OBJECTIVE: As the global population ages, non-pharmacological interventions such as personalized music therapy show promise for wellbeing in older adults. We propose the Fusion-Attentive Temporal Network (FAT-Net). This dual-stream model processes minute level heart-rate and music on/off data alongside daily summary features to predict a composite health score. METHODS: Data from 92 participants over 45 ± 10 days were augmented fourfold using jittering, time-warping, magnitude scaling, and SMOTE. The temporal stream uses Conv1D, BiLSTM, and self-attention pooling. The summary stream uses a th…

Music-Based Interventions in Clinical Pharmacy Practice: A Narrative Review of Mechanisms, Evidence, and a Framework for Integration.

Music-based interventions (MBIs) have emerged as a promising, nonpharmacologic approach to improving patient care across a variety of clinical settings. This narrative review examines the current evidence describing the mechanistic basis through which music engages biological pathways relevant to clinical pharmacy practice, and the clinical evidence supporting MBIs as adjuncts to pharmacotherapy across clinical outcomes. From this evidence, the review proposes a framework through which MBIs may be integrated into clinical practice that comprises: (1) patient selection, (2) MBI selection, and (…

Brain development and musical skills: A longitudinal twin study on brain developmental trajectories and sensorimotor synchronization.

There are individual differences in brain developmental patterns, yet it is unknown to what extent these may be driven by enriched experiences. Moreover, it is not well known whether enriched experiences may result in attenuated or accelerated brain development. Studying the relation between music performance and the brain using a large longitudinal twin study provides a framework for better understanding the genetic and environmental effects on brain development in childhood. The present region-of-interest study tested whether individual differences in sensorimotor synchronization with an aud…

A new therapy to alleviate the inflammatory injury of piglet intestine caused by short-distance transportation--music.

The purpose of this study was to explore whether music can reduce stress in animals by regulating the activity of the hypothalamus pituitary adrenal cortex (HPA) axis and reducing the concentration of cortisol. The control group was not played with any music or mechanical noise, the music group played music before and during transport, and the noise group played noise before and during transport as a positive control. The results showed that after two-hours of transportation, the concentrations of adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol in the music group were lower than that in the control a…

Investigating the Effect of Motivational Music and Video and the Role of Cognitive Style on the Gait Kinematics of Elderly Individuals.

In the present study, we investigated the impact of motivational music and video on gait parameters in older adults with different cognitive styles. Participants (N = 24; M age = 68.83 years, SD = 2.61) were divided into two cognitive style groups: field-dependent and field-independent, based on a hidden figures test. Participants completed a treadmill walking task under three different conditions (motivational music, motivational video, and no intervention). We measured their step width and step length and their hip, knee, and ankle joint angles at heel strike and toe-off. Results showed a si…

Gaze-Contingent Musical Attentional Bias Modification: Exploring Feasibility and Clinically-Relevant Changes in Mood.

Attentional bias modification (ABM) is cost-effective, accessible, and could meet the increasing demand for mental-health treatment. However, ABM paradigms that reliably modify attentional biases (AB) and symptoms are still required. Consequently, we examined the feasibility of a novel ABM intervention (gaze-contingent consonant and dissonant music heard when looking at positive and negative faces, respectively). Contingency awareness and use, and participant adherence and dropout assessed if the intervention could be done. Negative affect, state rumination, and negative AB (longer dwelling on…

The landscape of musical care during the beginning of life in the United Kingdom: a mixed-methods survey study.

BACKGROUND: The first 1001 days of life are a critical time in children's development and can be challenging for parents and caregivers. Some families in the United Kingdom (UK) are not getting the support they need. Research indicates that musical care - the role of music in supporting any aspect of people's developmental or health needs - can support families during, what we term, the beginning of life: pregnancy to two years of age. Musical care activities can take place in health and community settings and include music making, music listening, and music therapy. We must describe and under…
