Persistent Contralateral Pain Compromises Exercise Tolerance but Does not Alter Corticomotor Responses During Repeated, Submaximal Isometric Knee Extensions to Task Failure.

Muscle pain is an important determinant of exercise tolerance, but its relationship with neurophysiological responses during a submaximal exercise trial is unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of persistent contralateral pain on neurophysiological function and perceptual responses during ipsilateral isometric knee extensions to task failure. Ten participants performed a single-leg repeated submaximal isometric knee extensions with (PAIN) or without (CTRL) constant pain induced by intermittent blood flow occlusion combined with evoked muscle contraction applied to the

The influence of sex hormones on musculoskeletal pain and osteoarthritis.

The association of female sex with certain rheumatic symptoms and diseases is now indisputable. Some of the most striking examples of this association occur in individuals with musculoskeletal pain and osteoarthritis, in whom sex-dependent changes in incidence and prevalence of disease are seen throughout the lifecourse. Joint and muscle pain are some of the most common symptoms of menopause, and there is increasingly compelling evidence that changes in or loss of sex hormones (be it natural, autoimmune, pharmacological, or surgical) influence musculoskeletal pain propensity and perhaps diseas

Changes in blood bone markers after the first and second bouts of whole-body eccentric exercises.

The present study compared the first (EC1) and second (EC2) bouts of whole-body eccentric exercises to examine the effects of the magnitude of muscle damage on changes in blood bone markers. Fifteen sedentary young men performed nine eccentric exercises of arm, leg, and trunk muscles, and repeated them 2 weeks later. Blood samples were taken before and 2 h and 1-5 days following each bout to analyze plasma creatine kinase (CK) activity and myoglobin concentration, serum tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), type 1 C-terminal telopeptide (CTX-1), procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide (

Comparison of the Acute Effects of Foam Rolling with High and Low Vibration Frequencies on Eccentrically Damaged Muscle.

Previous research has shown that vibration foam rolling (VFR) on damaged muscle shows greater improvement in muscle soreness and range of motion (ROM) compared with foam rolling (FR) without vibration. However, the effect of frequency in VFR on muscle soreness and loss of function caused by damaged muscles is unknown. The purpose of this study was to compare the acute effects of 90-s low-frequency (LF)- and high-frequency (HF)-VFR intervention on ROM, muscle soreness, muscle strength, and performance of eccentrically damaged muscle. Study participants were sedentary healthy adult volunteers (n

The Effect of Capacitive and Resistive Electric Transfer Intervention on Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness Induced by Eccentric Exercise.

This study aimed to investigate the acute effect of capacitive and resistive electric transfer (CRet) intervention on eccentrically damaged muscle. A total of 28 healthy and sedentary male volunteers were randomly allocated to either CRet intervention or control groups. The participants performed a bout of eccentric exercise of the knee extensors with the dominant leg and received 30 min of CRet intervention of the quadriceps 48 h after the exercise. The dependent variables for the analysis were knee flexion range of motion (ROM), muscle soreness and maximum voluntary isometric (MVC-ISO), and

Effects of Maximal Eccentric Exercise on Deep Fascia Stiffness of the Knee Flexors: A Pilot Study using Shear-Wave Elastography.

The deep fascia is intimately linked to skeletal muscle and may be involved in delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). The present study therefore explored the effect of eccentric exercise on fascia stiffness and its relation with DOMS. Healthy active male adults (n = 19, 27 ± 4 years) performed 6 x 10 maximal eccentric knee flexions using an isokinetic dynamometer. Before (baseline) as well as immediately (T0), 1 hour (T1), and each day up to 72 hours (T24 to T72) afterwards, shear wave elastography was used to measure the mechanical stiffness of the biceps femoris muscle and the overlying fasc

Detailed organisation of the human midbrain periaqueductal grey revealed using ultra-high field magnetic resonance imaging.

The midbrain periaqueductal grey (PAG) is a critical region for the mediation of pain-related behavioural responses. Neuronal tract tracing techniques in experimental animal studies have demonstrated that the lateral column of the PAG (lPAG) displays a crude somatotopy, which is thought to be critical for the selection of contextually appropriate behavioural responses, without the need for higher brain input. In addition to the different behavioural responses to cutaneous and muscle pain - active withdrawal versus passive coping - there is evidence that cutaneous pain is processed in the regio

Resistance Training Affects Neuromuscular Fatigue But Not Efficiency in Elite Rowers.

PURPOSE: To investigate how resistance training (RT) in a regular training program affects neuromuscular fatigue (NMF) and gross efficiency (EGROSS) in elite rowers. METHODS: Twenty-six elite male rowers performed 4 RT sessions within 10 days. At baseline and after the first and fourth RT, EGROSS and NMF were established. From breathing gas, EGROSS was determined during submaximal rowing tests. Using a countermovement jump test, NMF was assessed by jump height, flight time, flight-to-contraction-time ratio, peak power, and time to peak power. Muscle soreness was assessed using a 10-cm-long vi

The torque-frequency relationship is impaired similarly following two bouts of eccentric exercise: No evidence of a protective repeated bout effect.

High-intensity eccentric exercise can lead to muscle damage and weakness. The 'repeated bout effect' (RBE) can attenuate these impairments when performing a subsequent bout. The influence of eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage on low-frequency force production is well-characterized; however, it is unclear how eccentric exercise and the RBE affect torque production across a range of stimulation frequencies (i.e., the torque-frequency relationship). We investigated the influence of an initial (Bout 1) and repeated bout (Bout 2) of eccentric exercise on the elbow flexor torque-frequency rela

N-3 PUFA as an ergogenic supplement modulating muscle hypertrophy and strength: a systematic review.

There is growing evidence that suggests that n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) may improve physical performance when combined with proper training through modulation of muscle hypertrophy, muscle strength, and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). This systematic review aims to examine the effect and optimal dosage of n-3 PUFA supplementation on muscle hypertrophy, muscle strength, and DOMS when combined with physical exercise. The PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE Complete, CINAHL and SPORTDiscus databases were searched following the PRISMA guidelines. Randomized controlled trials performe
