Beyond the usual etiology: Acute balanoposthitis revealing preputial myiasis: A case report.

Acute balanoposthitis is a common inflammatory condition in children, typically caused by infectious agents. Penile infestation by fly larvae is an extremely rare etiology, imposing difficulty with diagnosis and treatment in endemic areas. We describe the case of severe acute balanoposthitis in a toddler from Ambo town, Ethiopia, as a result of myiasis caused by tumbu fly larva. The larva was completely removed, and circumcision was done. This instance emphasizes how crucial it is to take myiasis into account in the differential of balanoposthitis in endemic areas.

Cutaneous myiasis complicating squamous cell carcinoma: a case report with literature review.

Myiasis is derived from the Greek word "myia", which means "fly". Zumpt, a German entomologist, defined this condition as the infestation of living humans and vertebrate animals by dipterous larvae that feed on living and dead host tissue, liquid body substances, or ingested food for a certain period. Myiasis is a rare complication that can occur in advanced squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). This report describes a rare cutaneous SCC of the face complicated by myiasis. A 70-year-old male patient presented with cutaneous SCC that involved the left lateral side of the nose, medial canthus, and left…

Red deer (Cervus elaphus) antler myiasis caused by Prochyliza nigrimanus (Meigen 1826).

Antlers are bony structures that undergo regular annual growth, mineralisation and casting phases, representing only mammalian organs capable of full regeneration. Myiasis is infestation of live vertebrates with dipterous larvae. We sampled mineralised antlers from a red deer spiker stag 2 months after velvet shedding, divided it into three segments and fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin. After demineralisation, samples were embedded in paraffin and sliced to a thickness of 6 µm. Tissue sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin (HE), a modified staining to show the ossification process,…

Cerebral Myiasis Secondary to Burr Hole Evacuation: A Rare Illustrative Case Report.

Myiasis (maggot infestation) is a condition in which fly maggots feed off and develop in the tissues of living organisms. Most common in tropical and subtropical regions, human myiasis, is prevalent among individuals in close association of domestic animals and those inhabiting the unhygienic conditions. We, hereby, describe a rare case of cerebral myiasis (17th in the world, 3rd in India) that presented to our institution in Eastern India secondary in the operated site of craniotomy and burr hole few years back. Cerebral myiases are exceedingly rare conditions, especially in high-income count…

Nasopharyngeal Myiasis in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Patients: Report of Two Cases.

Nosocomial myiasis is a rare event that has a higher incidence in the hospitals of poor and developing countries. The presence of nosocomial myiasis reflects the need for improved medical facilities and increased awareness among healthcare personnel. Severely ill patients are more susceptible, such as those with impaired consciousness, paralysis, and underlying diseases. The two cases here in described represent the first report of nosocomial myiasis in the Kurdistan Province, in Western Iran and one of them is the first report of myiasis involving a COVID-19-infected patient. The causal agent…

First record of traumatic myiasis obtained from forest musk deer (Moschus berezovskii).

Myiasis is an infestation of maggots on living tissue in humans and animals all over the world. It is known to occur in wild animals, while no information is reported in forest musk deer (Moschus berezovskii). During our research on the conservation of forest musk deer, we found a new record of traumatic myiasis of an injured forest musk deer. The flies are likely Lucilia caesar (Linnaeus, 1758) according to the results of DNA barcoding technology. We report traumatic myiasis of forest musk deer for the first time, which expands the information on parasite and myiasis of forest musk deer and c…

[Human urinary myiasis caused by Fannia canicularis (Diptera, Muscidae) larvae in Algeria].

BACKGROUND: Human urinary myiasis is caused by fly larvae which complete their entire cycle in the human body. CASE REPORT: A 37-year-old woman living in a village near Sidi Bel Abbes (Algeria) developed a parasite syndrome caused by Fannia canicularis larvae. About twenty larvae specimens were collected during her hospitalization. Larvae were emitted for 2 weeks after a 6-day treatment with cefotaxime for urinary tract infection. DISCUSSION: Urogenital myiasis is almost always subsequent to conditions of poor personal hygiene. In this case authentic larvae infestation was evidenced. The dia…

Myroides bacteremia associated with wound myiasis: A case report and focused literature review.

Myroides is a gram-negative rod that most commonly affects immunocompromised hosts. Traditional risk factors for infection include soil or water exposure, but one less well-described risk factor is myiasis: the infestation of living tissue by maggots. We present a 50-year-old man with end-stage liver disease and chronic lower-extremity wounds who developed Myroides bacteremia in association with nonsterile maggot infestation. A literature review of PubMed, Ovid (Embase and MEDLINE), Web of Science, and Scopus identified three other cases of Myroides infection in the setting of myiasis. Myroide…

Fatal cerebral myiasis secondary to squamous cell carcinoma: case report and scoping review.

Cerebral myiasis is an exceptionally rare condition caused by infestation with dipteran larvae, with only 20 cases reported in the literature to date. A 78-year-old man presented with anorexia, vomiting, and fever. Physical examination revealed a 7 × 8 cm ulcerated scalp lesion with a necrotic base, purulent discharge, a foul odor, and numerous larvae. Computed tomography demonstrated an osteolytic frontal bone defect accompanied by pneumocephalus and subcutaneous emphysema. The larvae were manually removed, an iodoform dressing was applied, and intravenous ceftriaxone therapy was initiated. P…

Orbital myiasis secondary to neglected medial canthal basal cell carcinoma caused by Chrysomyabezziana.

A case of orbital myiasis caused by Chrysomya bezziana arising from a long-standing, untreated basal cell carcinoma of the medial canthus in a 52-year-old woman is reported. The patient presented with periocular swelling, foul-smelling discharge, bleeding, and visible larvae emerging from the ulcerated lesion. Computed tomography showed orbital soft-tissue involvement with extension into the ipsilateral nasal cavity and ethmoid sinus, and focal bony erosion. Management included prompt mechanical removal of larvae, local wound care, systemic antibiotics, and adjunctive oral and topical ivermect…
