Prognostic Value of Positive Presurgical FDG PET/CT in the Evaluation of Tumor-Induced Osteomalacia.

METHODS: Seventy-six patients who had surgically removed tumors that caused osteomalacia were included in this retrospective investigation. All patients underwent both 18F-FDG and 68Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT prior to surgery. The prognostic value of presurgical FDG PET/CT study was determined with 5-year follow-up. RESULTS: In the presurgical evaluation, 68Ga-DOTATATE detected lesions in all 76 patients. However, FDG PET/CT was positive in only 25 among all 76 patients. Following surgical removal of the causative tumor, all 76 patients had symptomatic relief and normalization of the serum phosphate

Salivary gland ultrasound in the diagnostic workup of juvenile Sjögren's syndrome and mixed connective tissue disease.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile Sjögren's Syndrome (jSS) is a rare phenomenon that may appear as primary jSS or associated with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) and other autoimmune diseases as secondary jSS. With currently no standard diagnostic procedures available, jSS in MCTD seems to be underdiagnosed. We intended to describe and identify similar distinct salivary gland ultrasound (SGUS) findings in a cohort of primary and secondary jSS patients, focusing on sicca like symptoms and glandular pain/swelling in the patients'history. METHODS: We present a single-center study with chart data colle

Systemic lupus erythematosus and granulomatous lymphadenopathy.

BACKGROUND: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is known to present with a wide variety of clinical manifestations. Lymphadenopathy is frequently observed in children with SLE and may occasionally be the presenting feature. SLE presenting with granulomatous changes in lymph node biopsy is rare. These features may also cause diagnostic confusion with other causes of granulomatous lymphadenopathy. CASE PRESENTATION: We report 12 year-old female who presented with generalized lymphadenopathy associated with intermittent fever as well as weight loss for three years. She also had developed anasarca

Preliminary report of pulsed dose rate brachytherapy in head-and-neck cancer.

PURPOSE: To assess the feasibility and acute/delayed toxicity of pulsed-dose-rate brachytherapy (PDR BT) in head-and-neck tumors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 45 head and neck cancer patients underwent interstitial or contact PDR BT at a dose of 10.2-70 Gy (median, 70 Gy) and 0.6 or 1.0 Gy/pulse/h. 42 patients were administered BT as part of their curative treatment; 32 of them had sole BT. Three reirradiated patients with recurrent tumor had palliative BT. RESULTS: PDR BT was well tolerated. Intense bleeding was the only complication associated with catheter removal from the tongue and bucca. 44 p

Tarsal tunnel syndrome: a manifestation of systemic disease.

In many respects, tarsal tunnel syndrome is analogous to carpal tunnel syndrome. Despite this fact, tarsal tunnel syndrome has lagged far behind its counterpart in recognition and understanding. Thought of as a local compression phenomenon, reports of systemic associations are now being seen with increased frequency. This article reviews both local and systemic considerations for tarsal tunnel syndrome. Analysis of our own group of patients revealed 49 with electrodiagnostically confirmed tarsal tunnel syndrome, 24 of whom had bilateral involvement. The incidence of systemic disease was found

SDC1+ CAFs secreting CTGF drive tumour metastasis via FGFR3 signalling in cancers.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are key stromal components of the tumour microenvironment (TME) that profoundly influence tumour progression. However, CAFs exhibit pronounced phenotypic and functional heterogeneity, and whether conserved CAF subtypes with shared functional hallmarks exist across different cancer types remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: We sought to uncover universal CAF subtypes that transcend tumour origins, defining their core molecular signatures and pro-tumorigenic functions within the TME. DESIGN: We constructed a pan-cancer CAF atlas through single-cell trans

Echinacoside ameliorates hepatic fibrosis and tumor invasion in rats with thioacetamide-induced hepatocellular carcinoma.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) affects approximately 800,000 individuals globally each year. Despite advancements in HCC treatments, there is still a pressing need to identify new drugs that can combat resistance. One potential option is echinacoside, a natural caffeic acid glycoside with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, and antidiabetic properties. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the ability of echinacoside to exhibit antitumor activity against HCC in rats through ameliorating hepatic fibrosis and tumor invasion. Rats were given thioacetamide to induce HCC, and some were giv

Six-year follow-up of a characteristic osteolytic lesion in a patient with tumor-induced osteomalacia.

OBJECTIVE: Tumor-induced osteomalacia is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by hypophosphatemia and inappropriately normal or low 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D. CLINICAL CASE: Here, we report a 6-year postoperative follow-up of a patient with oncogenic osteomalacia with a distinctive skeletal manifestation. The latter was characterized by an almost linear lytic lesion of a few millimeters with irregular borders, mainly involving the trabecular compartment but extending into cortical shell, located in the middle third of the right fibula. Six years after tumor resection, a sclerotic repair

Soft tissue perineurioma involving the kidney: a report of two cases with an emphasis on differential diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue perineurioma of the kidney is rare, with only a few reported cases. We report two additional cases with histologic, immunohistochemical and genetic analyses. CASE PRESENTATION: Both tumors were from adults (1 female aged 49 years and 1 male aged 42 years) and grossly had maximum diameters of 6.5 and 10 cm, respectively. The tumors were overall well circumscribed but unencapsulated, with focally entrapped benign native renal tubules in one case; both tumors seemed to arise in the capsular areas. The tumors had histologic and immunohistochemical profiles consistent with

Plutonium- or americium-induced liver tumors and lesions in beagles.

Plutonium-239 or 241Am administered intravenously in the monomeric citrate form was initially deposited in beagle livers principally in the hepatocytes and to a much lesser extent in the sinusoidal macrophages and connective tissues. The initial distribution was quite uniform throughout the hepatic parenchyma; however, at later postinjection intervals, depending on the amount of injected activity, the liver burden became increasingly more focal due to: (1) a progressive shift of the radionuclide from the hepatic epithelium to the macrophages; (2) the movement of such macrophages toward the por

Meningiomas involving the cavernous sinus: histological factors affecting the degree of resection.

Despite advances in the surgical treatment of meningiomas located at the skull base, surgery for meningiomas involving the cavernous sinus remains controversial. The controversy centers on whether complete resection of such a meningioma is possible while preserving cranial nerve function. To evaluate this question, the authors examined six patients with benign meningiomas involving the cavernous sinus. The pathological features of these tumors were evaluated and compared with the normal histoarchitecture of the cavernous sinus. The tendency of these tumors to be infiltrative is evident and thi

Integrating single-cell and bulk transcriptome analysis of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23)-producing mesenchymal tumors reveals molecular basis of its secretory phenotype.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare disorder caused by a phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) secreting fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). The aim of this study was to analyze PMTs for their transcriptomic characteristics. We performed single-cell RNA (n = 3) alongside bulk RNA sequencing of PMTs (n = 5) and surrounding bone tissue (n = 4) obtained during tumor removal in 10 patients (age 44 (41;64), serum phosphate (Pi)- 0.54 (0.43; 0.59) mM/L, FGF23-113 (40; 205) pg/ml). We revealed a total of 22,449 cells divided into 13 different categories. We identified the heterogeneity of the

The Role of Increased Connective Tissue Growth Factor in the Pathogenesis of Oral Submucous Fibrosis and its Malignant Transformation-An Immunohistochemical Study.

Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), a matricellular protein of the CCN family of extracellular matrix-associated heparin-binding proteins, is highly expressed in various organ fibrosis and several malignant tumors. Although a few studies have been conducted using CTGF in oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) and oral squamous cell carcinoma, no study has demonstrated its relation with various stages of OSF and its malignant transformation. The present study investigated the possible role of CTGF in the pathogenesis of OSF and its malignant transformation by using immunohistochemistry. Ten formalin

Increased Activity Due to Fractures Does Not Significantly Affect the Accuracy of 68Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT in the Detection of Culprit Tumor in the Evaluation of Tumor-Induced Osteomalacia.

OBJECTIVE: Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT is currently the most common imaging modality in localizing culprit tumors, which can result in tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO). Fracture, which is one of the most common consequences of the TIO, can also lead to increased Ga-DOTATATE activity and potentially affect the accuracy of Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT imaging. The aim of this investigation is to evaluate whether the increased Ga-DOTATATE activity at the sites of the fracture will cause interpretation difficulty in the localizing the culprit tumor causing TIO. METHOD: The images of Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT scan from a t

The Pathogenesis of Systemic Sclerosis.

Systemic sclerosis is a multisystem disorder with a high associated mortality. The hallmark abnormalities of the disease are in the immune system, vasculature, and connective tissue. Systemic sclerosis occurs in susceptible individuals and is stimulated by initiating events that are poorly understood at present. In order for the disease phenotype to appear there is dysfunction in the homoeostatic mechanisms of immune tolerance, endothelial physiology, and extracellular matrix turnover. The progression of disease is not sequential but requires simultaneous dysfunction in these normal regulatory
