Shock wave lithotripsy as a primary modality for treating upper ureteric stones: A 10-year experience.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) has been recommended as a first-line treatment for upper ureteric calculi in several studies with a success rate of 80-90%. Our aim is to present our retrospective data of treatment of upper ureteric stones with SWL as primary modality over a 10-year period and evaluate the factors affecting fragmentation and clearance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From February 1997 to March 2007, 846 patients with upper ureteric stones were treated with SWL as the primary modality. Age: 9-69 years, 546 males and 300 females, stone size: 7-22 mm. Pyuria in 132/846

Surgical management of urinary stones with abnormal kidney anatomy.

In spite of the fact that urologic surgical techniques used by urologists are becoming more and more minimally invasive and easier because of developing technologies, surgical approaches for the urinary stones in kidneys with abnormal anatomy are still confusing. The objective of this article is to determine the treatment options in these kidneys. For this purpose, between 2005 and 2015, we retrospectively evaluated patients operated for urolithiasis with various congenital renal anomalies in five referral urology clinics in our country. Of the 178 patients (110 male, 60 female), 96 had horses

Endoscopic-assisted robotic pyelolithotomy: a viable treatment option for complex pediatric nephrolithiasis.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Endourological and percutaneous approaches are the standard of care for treatment of pediatric urolithiasis. However, in certain situations, an endoscopic-assisted robotic pyelolithotomy (EARP) can be an acceptable alternative. Limited data exist on pediatric EARP; thus, the authors describe their experience. METHODS: Patient selection: The authors retrospectively analyzed the records of all robotic procedures performed at five institutions from 7/09-10/17 to identify patients who underwent EARP. The authors collected demographics data, indications, operative time,

Moving Beyond Linear Dimensions: Using Stone Volume to Better Predict High-Complexity PCNL Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Stone diameter, measured in a single dimension, is used for management, billing, and research. Recent evidence has supported the use of stone volume over diameter. The purpose of this study was to compare stone volume and diameter as a predictor for outcomes following percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on PCNL patients at a single academic institution between January 2017 and June 2022. Preoperative computed tomography scans were analyzed to assess maximal stone diameter and stone volume using both Enterprise Imaging

Ex vivo retrograde stone removal in donor kidneys using an ultra-mini nephroscope prior to renal transplantation in Indonesia: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Urolithiasis in donor kidneys presents a relative contraindication for transplantation due to the potential risk of obstruction and impaired graft function. Although less common in renal transplant recipients, obstructive urolithiasis remains a significant concern. Ex vivo stone removal during bench surgery has been explored as a safe and effective method to mitigate this risk. OBJECTIVE: To present a case series demonstrating the feasibility and outcomes of ex vivo stone clearance using a rigid ultra-mini percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) set with a 7-Fr nephroscope via a ret

[Extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy as treatment of lithiasis in horseshoe kidney].

OBJECTIVES: Horseshoe kidney is the most frequent renal congenital anomaly, with an estimated general population prevalence of 1/400-500. This entity may be asymptomatic for the entire lifetime, or produce symptoms from associated complications such as lithiasis, hydronephrosis, or recurrent infections. The incidence of lithiasis varies between 20% and 80% of the patients. The treatment of lithiasis in this entity is controversial due to problems derived from the anatomy of the kidney and its drainage when stones are treated with external shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). We tried to evaluate the

Chronic kidney disease and reduced renal COX2 expression in xanthinuria: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Xanthinuria is a rare inherited metabolic disorder caused by xanthine dehydrogenase (XDH) deficiency, leading to excessive urinary xanthine excretion. It is associated with kidney stones and, in exceptional cases, renal failure. To date, no kidney biopsy findings have been reported in cases of xanthinuria. We present the first documented biopsy from such a patient, revealing a reduction in cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) expression. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old man of Afghan origin presented with flank pain and a staghorn calculus in the right kidney. Laboratory tests revealed impaire
