Functional and Structural Changes in the Inner Ear and Cochlear Hair Cell Loss Induced by Hypergravity.

Gravitational changes have been shown to cause significant abnormalities in various body systems, including the cardiovascular, immune, vestibular, and musculoskeletal systems. While numerous studies have examined the response of the vestibular system to gravitational stimulation, research on functional changes in the peripheral inner ear remains limited. The inner ear comprises two closely related structures: the vestibule and cochlea. These components share similar structures and neural functions, highlighting the importance of investigating changes in auditory nerve cells in response to gra

Differential efficacy of olfactory neurospheres from deviated nasal septum and chronic rhinosinusitis patients in regenerating olfactory epithelium.

BACKGROUND: Olfactory epithelial stem cells hold significant potential for treating olfactory dysfunction by facilitating tissue maintenance and repair. Understanding the inherent qualities of these stem cells is crucial for optimizing their therapeutic efficacy. METHODS: Olfactory epithelial samples were collected from patients with deviated nasal septum (DNS) and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). These were cultured to form olfactory neurospheres (ONS), which were then analyzed for neural stem cell markers, neurotrophic factor production, and their ability to differentiate into olfactory sensor

Examining functional connectivity in metabolic syndrome and small vessel disease: A novel approach to understanding olfactory dysfunction and Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is projected to triple by 2050, highlighting the need to identify early markers and underlying mechanisms associated with its progression. Olfactory dysfunction has emerged as an early indicator of AD, with its neural basis linked to changes in the medial temporal lobe and associated networks. Cardiovascular risk factors, including metabolic syndrome (MetS) and cerebral small vessel disease (SVD), have been implicated in neurodegenerative processes, yet their impact on olfactory network connectivity remains underexplored. This study aime

Celiac Disease Deep Learning Image Classification Using Convolutional Neural Networks.

Celiac disease (CD) is a gluten-sensitive immune-mediated enteropathy. This proof-of-concept study used a convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) CD histological images, normal small intestine control, and non-specified duodenal inflammation (7294, 11,642, and 5966 images, respectively). The trained network classified CD with high performance (accuracy 99.7%, precision 99.6%, recall 99.3%, F1-score 99.5%, and specificity 99.8%). Interestingly, when the same network (already trained for the 3 class images), analyzed duodenal adenocarcinoma (3723 images), the n

An open computational toolbox to analyze multi- and single-unit sympathetic nerve activity in microneurography.

Microelectrode recordings from human peripheral and cranial nerves provide a means to study both afferent and efferent axonal signals at different levels of detail, from multi- to single-unit activity. Their analysis can lead to advancements both in diagnostic and in the understanding of the genesis of neural disorders. However, most of the existing computational toolboxes for the analysis of microneurographic recordings are limited in scope or not open-source. Additionally, conventional burst-based metrics are not suited to analyze pathological conditions and are highly sensitive to distance

Automated Cough Analysis with Convolutional Recurrent Neural Network.

Chronic cough is associated with several respiratory diseases and is a significant burden on physical, social, and psychological health. Non-invasive, real-time, continuous, and quantitative monitoring tools are highly desired to assess cough severity, the effectiveness of treatment, and monitor disease progression in clinical practice and research. There are currently limited tools to quantitatively measure spontaneous coughs in daily living settings in clinical trials and in clinical practice. In this study, we developed a machine learning model for the detection and classification of cough

Overexpression of Egr1 Transcription Regulator Contributes to Schwann Cell Differentiation Defects in Neural Crest-Specific Adar1 Knockout Mice.

Adenosine deaminase acting on RNA 1 (ADAR1) is the principal enzyme for the adenosine-to-inosine RNA editing that prevents the aberrant activation of cytosolic nucleic acid sensors by endogenous double stranded RNAs and the activation of interferon-stimulated genes. In mice, the conditional neural crest deletion of Adar1 reduces the survival of melanocytes and alters the differentiation of Schwann cells that fail to myelinate nerve fibers in the peripheral nervous system. These myelination defects are partially rescued upon the concomitant removal of the Mda5 antiviral dsRNA sensor in vitro, s

Classification and analysis of retinal interneurons by computational structure under natural scenes.

Inhibitory neurons are diverse across the brain, but for the visual system we lack the ability to functionally classify these neurons under complex natural stimuli. Here we take the approach of classifying retinal amacrine cell responses to natural scenes using optical recording and an interpretable neural network model. We fit mouse amacrine cell responses to a two-layer convolutional neural network model of a class shown previously to accurately capture salamander ganglion cell responses to natural scenes. Using an approach from interpretable machine learning, we determined for each stimulus

Efficient digital design of ganglion cells in the retinal pathway.

Spiking networks, the third generation of neural networks, are presented as low-power consumption machines with higher cognitive ability, one of the main concerns in intelligence machines. In fact, neuromorphic systems are hardware implementations of spiking networks with minimum resource, area, and power consumption while preserve maximum working frequency. Here, the focus is on the digital implementation of Retinal Ganglion Cell (RGC) based on the linear approximation of non-linear terms which is called Linear Retinal Ganglion Cell (LRGC). The low-cost hardware design of biological cells is

Selective control of synaptic plasticity in heterogeneous networks through transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS).

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) represents a promising non-invasive treatment for an increasingly wide range of neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. The ability to use periodically oscillating electric fields to non-invasively engage neural dynamics opens up the possibility of recruiting synaptic plasticity and to modulate brain function. However, despite consistent reports about tACS clinical effectiveness, strong state-dependence combined with the ubiquitous heterogeneity of cortical networks collectively results in high outcome variability. Introducing variations

Influences of time delay and connection topology on a multi-delay inertial neural system.

Multiple delays and connection topology are the key parameters for the realistic modeling of networks. This paper discusses the influences of time delays and connection weight on multi-delay artificial neural models with inertial couplings. Firstly, sufficient conditions of some singularities involving static bifurcation, Hopf bifurcation, and pitchfork-Hopf bifurcation are presented by analyzing the transcendental characteristic equation. Secondly, taking self-connection weight and coupling delays as adjusting parameters and utilizing the parameter perturbation with the aid of the non-reduced

Functional magnetic resonance imaging study on anxiety and depression disorders induced by chronic restraint stress in rats.

Persistent and negative stress stimulation is one of the most important factors leading to anxiety and depression in individuals, and it can negatively affect the normal function and structure of brain-related regions. However, the maladaptive changes of brain neural networks in anxiety and depression induced by chronic stress have not been explored in detail. In this study, we analyzed the changes in global information transfer efficiency, stress related blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD)- and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)- signals and functional connectivity (FC) in rat models based on res

Synaptic activity is not required for establishing heterogeneity of inner hair cell ribbon synapses.

Neural sound encoding in the mammalian cochlea faces the challenge of representing audible sound pressures that vary over six orders of magnitude. The cochlea meets this demand through the use of active micromechanics as well as the diversity and adaptation of afferent neurons and their synapses. Mechanisms underlying neural diversity likely include heterogeneous presynaptic input from inner hair cells (IHCs) to spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) as well as differences in the molecular profile of SGNs and in their efferent control. Here, we tested whether glutamate release from IHCs, previously fo

Study on the infrared dynamic evolution characteristics of different joint inclination phyllite under uniaxial compression.

The destructive behavior of rocks and the evolution behavior of cracks are highly correlated. With the continuous development process of crack, the stress state of rock is constantly broken until entirely failed, so it is necessary to study the spatial and temporal behavior characteristics of the crack in the process of rock destruction. In this paper, the destruction process of phyllite specimens is analyzed by thermal imaging technology, and the temperature evolution process of the crack is studied to explore the infrared characteristics of the crack evolution process. Furthermore, a model f
