Neurophysiological impact of childhood sexual abuse in men: A diffusion tensor imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) can cause lasting neurodevelopmental changes, posing significant challenges for survivors. Its specific impact on men remains heavily stigmatized and under-researched. This study examined neurophysiological correlates of CSA in men using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). METHODS: A community-based sample of men with CSA histories (n = 15) and controls (n = 13) were recruited from urban centers across Canada. All participants underwent DTI, which measures white matter integrity through fractional anisotropy (FA) values. Group comparisons were conducted us

Disassembling infra-low-frequency neurofeedback: A neurophysiological investigation of its feedback components.

Infra-Low-Frequency Neurofeedback (ILF-NFB), an EEG-based intervention, integrates specific electrode placements with "classic" frequency band (FB; 1-35 Hz) and infra-low-frequency (ILF; <0.1 Hz) components. Despite increasing clinical use, systematic studies of their individual and combined effects on neurophysiology remain limited. To address this gap, we conducted three randomized, sham-controlled, double-blind crossover studies (each with 40 healthy volunteers) examining FB-Only (Study 1), ILF-Only (Study 2), and combined FB&ILF (Study 3) protocols. The primary outcome was a functional con…

Assessing Surgical Outcomes in Cervical Degenerative Disease: The Role of Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring.

Background: Cervical degenerative disease is a common condition associated with significant morbidity, often presenting as neck pain, radiculopathy, or myelopathy. Its growing incidence, particularly in the aging population, has led to an increased demand for surgical interventions aimed at relieving neural compression and restoring spinal stability. Objective: This study aims to evaluate surgical outcomes in patients with degenerative cervical conditions, with a particular focus on the role of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) in preventing adverse neurological events both i

Involuntary movements in patients with impaired awareness: A comparative study of phenomenology and neurophysiological evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Subtle involuntary movements in patients with impaired awareness may suggest non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE), but their diagnostic accuracy is unclear. Since electroencephalography (EEG) is not always available, clinicians often rely on motor signs for early diagnosis. We aimed to characterize these movements and evaluate interrater agreement and diagnostic accuracy among specialists. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study of 98 patients with suspected NCSE who underwent video-EEG between 2014 and 2019. Video samples of involuntary movements were revi

Unraveling the neurophysiological underpinnings of social anxiety through body language: An ERP study.

OBJECTIVE: Body language plays a vital role in emotion perception, yet the involuntary neural mechanisms through which individuals with social anxiety process these signals remain unclear. This research investigates these mechanisms by analyzing visual components such as P3a, P1, and N190 within a three-stimulus oddball paradigm. METHOD: Participants were classified into high social anxiety (HSA, n = 31) and low social anxiety (LSA, n = 26) groups using the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS). The paradigm employed custom-designed distractors depicting positive, negative, and neutral body e

A Multimodal Neurophysiological Approach to Evaluate Educational Contents in Terms of Cognitive Processes and Engagement.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the impact of different learning materials in terms of comprehension and engagement is essential for optimizing educational strategies. While digital learning tools are increasingly used, offering and multiplying different educational solutions, their effects on learners' mental workload, attention, and engagement remain underexplored. This study aims to investigate how different types of learning content-educational videos, academic videos, and text reading-affect cognitive processing and engagement. METHODS: Neurophysiological signals, including electroencephalogra

Analysis of Neurophysiological Correlates of Mental Fatigue in Both Monotonous and Demanding Driving Conditions.

Background/Objectives: Mental fatigue during driving, whether passive (arising from monotony) or active (caused by cognitive overload), is a critical factor for road safety. Despite the growing interest in monitoring techniques based on neurophysiological signals, current biomarkers are primarily validated only for detecting passive mental fatigue under monotonous conditions. The objective of this study is to evaluate the sensitivity of the MDrow index, which is based on EEG Alpha band activity, previously validated for detecting passive mental fatigue, with respect to active mental fatigue, i

A protocol to simultaneously examine cardiorespiratory, cerebrovascular and neurophysiological responses inside a hypobaric chamber.

We describe a protocol to examine neurophysiological (electroencephalography, EEG), cerebrovascular (ultrasound assessments of middle cerebral artery blood velocity, MCAv) and cardiorespiratory (blood pressure, oxygen saturation, end-tidal gases, respiratory rate) responses inside a hypobaric chamber. This procedure aims to standardize the methodology in experiments conducted within a hypobaric chamber such as comparing normobaric and hypobaric hypoxia. This is important because current understanding of relationships between neurophysiological activity, and cerebrovascular and cardiorespirator

Theta-Gamma Decoupling - A neurophysiological marker of impaired reward processing in Parkinson's disease.

Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) exhibit altered reward processing, reflected by a decreased amplitude of an event-related potential (ERP) marker called reward positivity (RewP). Most studies have used RewP to investigate reward behavior due to the high temporal resolution of EEG and its high sensitivity. However, traditional single-electrode ERP analyses often overlook the intricate dynamics of non-phase-locked oscillatory activity and the complex interactions within these neural oscillatory patterns. Studying oscillatory activity is crucial as it provides mechanistic insights into t

Severe sexual abuse in childhood and altered neurophysiological response to reward in female adults.

BACKGROUND: A relatively understudied but growing body of research indicates that individuals with a history of childhood trauma exhibit altered reward processing in adulthood. Research to date has focused on adversity broadly, with studies typically finding evidence of blunted response to rewards in adults with a history of childhood trauma. OBJECTIVE: Given the role of reward processing in risk for psychopathology and the particularly pathogenic nature of sexual abuse (SA), the present study sought to assess whether adults with a history of severe childhood SA exhibit altered neurophysiolog

Total Intravenous Anesthesia for Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring in a Child With Diastematomyelia: A Case Report.

Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) has achieved popularity because it facilitates monitoring of the functional integrity of neural structures under general anesthesia. It aids in the early detection of injury and minimizes postoperative neurologic deficit or neurologic morbidity from surgical manipulations of various neurologic structures. The patient mentioned in this case report presented with lower limb radiculopathy and was diagnosed with diastematomyelia Type II, and she was planned for surgical intervention under general anesthesia. Preoperatively, a team of surgeons, an

Entropy and fractal analysis of brain-related neurophysiological signals in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

Brain-related neuronal recordings, such as local field potential, electroencephalogram and magnetoencephalogram, offer the opportunity to study the complexity of the human brain at different spatial and temporal scales. The complex properties of neuronal signals are intrinsically related to the concept of 'scale-free' behavior and irregular dynamic, which cannot be fully described through standard linear methods, but can be measured by nonlinear indexes. A remarkable application of these analysis methods on electrophysiological recordings is the deep comprehension of the pathophysiology of neu

An ecological study protocol for the multimodal investigation of the neurophysiological underpinnings of dyadic joint action.

A novel multimodal experimental setup and dyadic study protocol were designed to investigate the neurophysiological underpinnings of joint action through the synchronous acquisition of EEG, ECG, EMG, respiration and kinematic data from two individuals engaged in ecologic and naturalistic cooperative and competitive joint actions involving face-to-face real-time and real-space coordinated full body movements. Such studies are still missing because of difficulties encountered in recording reliable neurophysiological signals during gross body movements, in synchronizing multiple devices, and in d

Intraoperative Neurophysiologic Monitoring in Predicting Dysphagia After Brainstem and Fourth Ventricle Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Dysphagia represents the main complication of posterior fossa neurosurgery. Adequate diagnosis of this complication is warranted to prevent untimely extubation with subsequent aspiration. Intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IONM) modalities may be used for this purpose. However, it is not known which IONM modality may be significant for diagnosis. This study aimed to define the most significant IONM modality for dysphagia prognostication after posterior fossa neurosurgery. METHODS: The analysis included 46 patients (34 with tumors of the fourth ventricle and 12 with brainst
