Samples, mainly from occipital cortex and pituitary gland, but also from rental cortex, olfactory bulbs, thyroid gland and liver were collected from autopsies of 8 dental staff cases and 27 controls. These samples were analysed for total mercury content using radiochemical neutron activation analyses. The results revealed high mercury concentrations (median 815, range 135-4,040 micrograms Hg/kg wet weight) in pituitaries from the dental staff cases compared to controls (N = 23, median 23 range 6-1, 170 micrograms Hg/kg). Calcitonin (CT) deficiency has been suggested as an etiologic factor in postmenopausal osteoporosis (PM-OP). The contents of total and methyl mercury in scalp hair samples of 1179 fishermen living in a typical Hg-polluted region in northeast China and 27 lying-in women and their newborns in Beijing have been determined by INAA, GC(EC), and other techniques. To understand the biological effects of residual radioactivity after the atomic bomb explosion in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we previously investigated the effects of 56Mn, a major residual radioisotope. Our rat study demonstrated that inhalation exposure to 56MnO2 microparticles affected gene expression in the lungs, testes, and liver, despite the low radiation doses. Because 56Mn is a β- and γ-emitter, the differential effects between β- and γ-rays should be clarified.
