Condylar process fractures remain a matter of ongoing controversy in maxillofacial surgery because of variety of opinions and proposed treatment modalities offered in the literature. The trend is toward open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) whenever there is displacement or dislocation combined with unstable occlusal conditions. The fundamental treatment goals are anatomical fixation and early return to function. However, ORIF of a fractured condyle carries significant risks, including facial nerve damage, and presents challenges in reducing and stabilizing the fractured segment in an ar

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Acetabular fractures in osteoporotic bone are associated with substantial joint impaction and comminution, previously shown to be prognostic for a poor result. A combined procedure of open reduction, internal fixation (ORIF), and total hip arthroplasty (THA) can be a good option, allowing for immediate weightbearing as tolerated. We report short- to medium-term outcome and complications of the results of patients treated with this combined procedure.
METHODS: 48 cases treated with ORIF and acute THA from 2000 to 2019 were identified from our local pelvic fracture regis

BACKGROUND: Most displaced intra-articular calcaneus fractures need to be treated surgically but postoperative soft tissue complications limit to achieve of optimal functional outcomes. Certain mini-invasive techniques lead to better soft tissue healing but anatomical reduction gets compromised.
OBJECTIVES: We aim to evaluate the results of lateral wall de-roofing of the calcaneum to achieve good anatomical reduction as well as to minimise soft tissue complications in the internal fixation of calcaneal fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two patients (40 ft) with displaced intra-articul

BACKGROUND: The incidence of periprosthetic fractures after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) increases in parallel with the number of procedures. Comminuted fractures along the primary fracture line extending to the edge of the prosthesis are challenging, and bilateral fractures are rarely reported, especially with open injuries.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old female had undergone bilateral TKA in our hospital 5 years before admission. She was admitted with a traumatic bilateral Rorabeck type II B distal femur periprosthetic fracture (closed right, open left, Gustilo II) and was treated with b

BACKGROUND: Consensus on the treatment for severely comminuted calcaneus fractures has yet to be found. This study aims to analyze the functional and radiological short- and medium-term outcomes of displaced calcaneus fractures of type III and IV treated with ORIF, and to identify, if present, the early predictors of unfavorable outcomes.
METHODS: Thirty-three calcaneal fractures were included, 23 type III and 10 type IV, according to Sanders classification. AOFAS scales for ankle and hindfoot and SF-12 were used. Böhler and Gissane angles were analyzed before and after surgery.
RESULTS: The

A lack of studies analyze risk factors associated with surgical site infection (SSI) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients with trauma undergoing orthopedic surgery. We questioned, (1) "What is the proportion of SSI in HIV-positive patients receiving open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of traumatic limb fractures?" and (2) "What are the independent risk factors for SSI of HIV-positive patients with traumatic limb fractures who received ORIF?" A retrospective study was performed in our institution from May 2011 to December 2019. A total of 246 patients were enrolled. D

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: New-onset deep vein thrombosis (DVT) reportedly affects prognosis and surgical outcomes of elderly patients. However, its effect on distal femur fractures (DFFs) remains unclear. We aimed to address the epidemiological characteristics and the associated predictors for post-operative DVT in patients with closed DFFs over age 60 years old.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We designed a prospective cohort trial at our hospital between October 2018 and June 2020 and recruited consecutive 140 patients over age 60 years diagnosed with closed DFFs. We examined location and prognosis of

INTRODUCTION: The correct choice of surgical approaches in complex tibial plateau fractures is essential to achieve adequate reduction and fixation. Detailed fracture morphology and direction of columns displacement, that we have named the Main Deformity Direction (MDD), may aid in selecting the optimal surgical strategy. In this article we present a new algorithm based on MDD and column concepts. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of a group of tibial plateau fractures treated according to this algorithm. The secondary aim was to evaluate the incidence of the different MDD in

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) has been reported to be superior to open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in the treatment of different long bone fractures. Nevertheless, in distal fibula fractures, the evidence of MIPO remains scarce. The aim of this retrospective study was to compare the clinical and radiological outcomes of the minimally invasive techniques applied to the distal fibula with open reduction and internal fixation within a 12 months follow-up.
METHODS: A consecutive series of patients who underwent surgery using either ORIF or MIPO for the trea

INTRODUCTION: The three currently used methods of treatment: namely open reduction plate osteosynthesis (ORPO), Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO), antegrade intramedullary nailing(IMN) are all reported as satisfactory procedures for treatment of humeral shaft fractures. However none of the published reports have a comparison of superiority of one procedure over the other. We evaluated the clinical, radiological and functional outcome of the three procedures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied adult patients with humerus shaft fractures over a period of 2 years from May 2014 to May

A previous ultrasound study showed inflammation around the extensor pollicis longus tendon and surrounding structures at 6 weeks after manipulation, with or without pin fixation, and immobilization for distal radius fracture. Ultrasound examination after plating of distal radius fracture followed by early active mobilization of the wrist showed a short-lived inflammatory response, evident at 2 weeks but not at 6 weeks, around the extensor pollicis longus tendon (26 wrists examined) and flexor pollicis longus tendon (18 wrists examined). Early active mobilization of the wrist appears to limit t

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the distal radius represent the most common fracture in elderly patients, and often indicate the onset of symptomatic osteoporosis. A variety of treatment options is available, including closed reduction and plaster casting, K-wire-stabilization, external fixation and open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with volar locked plating. The latter is widely promoted by clinicians and hardware manufacturers. Closed reduction and cast stabilization for six weeks is a simple, convenient, and ubiquitously available intervention. In contrast, ORIF requires hospitalization,
