Rod derotation techniques for thoracolumbar spinal deformity.

OBJECTIVE: The operative correction of scoliosis requires multiple intraoperative techniques and tools to achieve an adequate result. Frequently, multiple methods are used to accomplish this, such as rod cantilever techniques, in situ bending, Smith-Petersen and pedicle subtraction osteotomies, closed reduction methods, and rod derotation techniques. Rod derotation techniques will be reviewed and discussed in this article. METHODS: A review of the available literature on anterior and posterior rod derotation is performed with a case example of the authors' experience utilizing this technique.

Pediatric Pes Planus: A State-of-the-Art Review.

Flatfoot (pes planus) is common in infants and children and often resolves by adolescence. Thus, flatfoot is described as physiologic because it is usually flexible, painless, and of no functional consequence. In rare instances, flatfoot can become painful or rigid, which may be a sign of underlying foot pathology, including arthritis or tarsal coalition. Despite its prevalence, there is no standard definition for pediatric flatfoot. Furthermore, there are no large, prospective studies that compare the natural history of idiopathic, flexible flat feet throughout development in response to vari

[Distal biceps brachii rupture in a patient with COVID-19].

INTRODUCTION: distal biceps tendon injury commonly occurs in male patients between the fifth and sixth decade of life. The mechanism of the injury is an eccentric contraction with the elbow in flexion of 90 degrees. For its surgical treatment, several options have been described in the literature with different approaches, type of suture to be used and various methods of fixing the repair of the distal biceps tendon. The musculoskeletal clinical manifestations of COVID-19 are fatigue, myalgia, arthralgia, but the musculoskeletal effects of COVID-19 remain unclear. CASE REPORT: 46-year-old COV

Environmental impact of single-use items and their contamination levels in elective orthopaedic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Single-use items have dominated operating theatres since the 1980s, initially perceived to carry a lower risk of surgical site infection and occupational blood exposure while maintaining hospital expenditure. The topic of reusable surgical gowns and drapes has naturally emerged due to discussions regarding climate change. Considering reusable alternatives is the next step in reducing the carbon footprint of operating theatres. METHODS: Clinical waste attributable to single-use items was collected from 93 cases in an elective orthopaedic hospital over four weeks, comprising knee ar

Augmented reality simulation framework for minimally invasive orthopedic surgery.

PURPOSE: Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has emerged in clinical practice to minimize surgical trauma, providing patients with faster recovery, reduced pain and complications and enhanced aesthetic results compared to traditional surgery. However, this approach increase the risk of iatrogenic damage, i.e. the accidental injury to sensitive anatomical structures (eg. nerves and vascular strcuteres) not directly visible during a percutaneous access. Augmented reality (AR) can effectively mitigate these drawbacks by overlaying graphical information onto the surgical field and providing real-time

A minimally invasive tubular retractor-assisted retropleural approach for thoracic disc herniations - case series and technical note.

PURPOSE: Thoracic disc herniations are uncommon and carry a high risk for neurological deterioration. Traditional surgical approaches include thoracotomy, costotransversectomy or posterior approaches with considerable morbidity. In this technical note with case series, we describe a minimally invasive tubular retractor-assisted retropleural approach for simple and less invasive microsurgical exploration of thoracic disc herniations from a lateral angle. METHODS: Surgical technique consisted of partial rib resection and retropleural dissection followed by the placement of a tubular retractor (

Anatomical basis of a safe mini-invasive technique for lengthening of the anterior gastrocnemius aponeurosis.

BACKGROUND: The surgical procedure itself of lengthening the gastrocnemius muscle aponeurosis is performed to treat multiple musculoskeletal, neurological and metabolical pathologies related to a gastro-soleus unit contracture such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, metatarsalgia, cerebral palsy, or diabetic foot ulcerations. Therefore, the aim of our research was to prove the effectiveness and safety of a new ultrasound-guided surgery-technique for the lengthening of the anterior gastrocnemius muscle aponeurosis, the "GIAR"- technique: the gastrocnemius-intramuscular aponeurosis rel

Combined Nasoseptal and Inferior Turbinate Flap for Reconstruction of Large Skull Base Defect After Expanded Endonasal Approach: Operative Technique.

BACKROUND: Increasing indications for endoscopic endonasal approaches have led neurosurgeons to develop new reconstruction techniques for larger skull base defects. Vascularized grafts have been a great adjunction to reduce the rate of cerebrospinal fluid leak and can also be used to cover exposed critical structures such as the internal carotid artery. The nasoseptal flap and the inferior or middle turbinate flap are thus widely used in endoscopic skull base surgery, but may be insufficient for very large defects. OBJECTIVE: To present a new mucosal flap used to cover large skull base defect
