Assessment of autonomic function in patients with a Parkinsonian syndrome.

The integrity of the autonomic nervous system was assessed in 11 Parkinsonian patients with symptoms suggestive of autonomic dysfunction. Three had the additional clinical features of the Shy-Drager variant of idiopathic orthostatic hypotension and were found to have a gross disturbance of vasomotor, sudomotor, pilomotor, and bladder function; assessment indicated that a lesion was present at sympathetic ganglionic level or beyond in two cases, though a more centrally placed lesion may well have been present also, as in the third case. In the remaining eight patients with paralysis agitans no

Cardiovagal baroreflex gain relates to sensory loss after spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to autonomic nervous system damage, resulting in loss of sympathetic control to the vasculature and the heart proportional to injury level. Given maintained cardiac parasympathetic control, we hypothesized that SCI demonstrates a compensatory, higher baroreflex gain compared to able-bodied that relates to injury level (neurological and/or sensory). We compared baroreflex gain (average and across 10-20, 20-30, and 30-40 mmHg input stimuli) derived from neck chamber technique in SCI (N = 29; neurological level C1-T10, sensory zone of partial preservation C4-S4/5; ≤

Altered nigrostriatal dopaminergic and noradrenergic system prompted by systemic lead toxicity versus a treatment by curcumin-III in the desert rodent Meriones shawi.

Exposure to lead is a threat factor for neurodegenerative disorders progress as it could trigger dopaminergic deficiency. We aimed herein to assess the effect of acute lead exposure (25mg/kg B.W i.p.) during three continuous days on the dopaminergic and noradrenergic systems together with locomotor performance in Meriones shawi (M. shawi), then the neuroprotective potential of curcumin-III (30mg/kg B.W) by oral gavage. Pb-exposed M. shawi exhibited increased tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunoreactivity in substantia nigra compacta (SNc), ventral tegmental area (VTA), locus coeruleus (LC), and do

Diverse myocardial extension and autonomic innervation on ligament of Marshall in humans.

INTRODUCTION: The ligament of Marshall (LOM) or the oblique vein of Marshall (VOM) in the left atrium (LA) is one of the origins of nonpulmonary vein ectopies causing atrial fibrillation. The distributions of myocardial bundles (Marshall bundles; MBs) and autonomic nerves adjacent to the LOM have not been completely elucidated. METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty-eight human hearts were examined postmortem. The inferolateral LA myocardium was dissected en block and cut perpendicularly to the atrioventricular ring. The specimens were sectioned at 1-mm intervals and stained with hematoxylin and eosin,

Anger inhibition, cardiovascular recovery, and vagal function: a model of the link between hostility and cardiovascular disease.

A model of the association between hostility and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is proposed based upon anger inhibition, slow cardiovascular recovery, and low parasympathetic activity (vagal tone). This model is opposed to the more conventional model that emphasizes anger expression, cardiovascular reactivity, and high sympathetic tone. We argue that in social reality, incidences of anger inhibition outnumber incidences of anger expression to a great extent, irrespective of preferred expression style. Moreover, slow cardiovascular recovery, rather than high reactivity, may be the mechanism under

Impairment of calcitonin gene-related peptide-induced potentiation of cholinergic sweat secretion in patients with multiple system atrophy.

Loss of sweating is a characteristic feature of multiple system atrophy (MSA) with autonomic failure, and widespread anhidrosis may lead to hyperthermia and collapse in a hot environment. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is present in the periglandular nerves around sweat glands and is a strong stimulant of methacholine (MCH)-mediated cholinergic sweating. The present study evaluated CGRP-related regulation of cholinergic sweating in patients with MSA. CGRP-induced potentiation of MCH-mediated cholinergic sweating was significantly reduced in MSA patients as compared with normal age-matc

Cellular and Molecular Neuro-Bone Cell Interactions Drive Alveolar Bone Remodeling During Orthodontic Mechanical Loading.

Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is a biomechanically driven process governed by dynamic cellular and molecular signaling interactions between neural and skeletal systems. This review synthesizes current evidence on neuron-bone cell crosstalk and the coordinated involvement of immune and vascular components in regulating alveolar bone remodeling during OTM. Key neural contributors include sensory neurons (nociceptors), autonomic neurons, central nervous system (CNS) circuits, and Schwann cells, which communicate with osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and periodontal ligament cells to modulate their pr

Neural regulation of tumor immunity: emerging opportunities to enhance cancer immunotherapy.

The nervous system is a key regulator of cancer immunity, influencing tumor development and treatment response through neuroimmune interactions. Both peripheral and central circuits transmit neural signals that directly influence immune cell recruitment, activation, and effector function within the tumor microenvironment. Evidences indicate that sympathetic, parasympathetic, sensory neurons, and glial cells actively reshape the immune landscape through neurotransmitters and neuromodulators. Central neural circuits, such as catecholaminergic and stress-responsive pathways, further integrate psy

Paragangliomas arise from the sympathetic or parasympathetic nervous system. Given the lack of human paraganglioma cell lines, we studied the effects of inactivating VHL in neuroblastoma cell lines, which also arise from the sympathetic nervous system. We found that total loss of pVHL function profoundly impairs the fitness …

School environment associates with lung function and autonomic nervous system activity in children: a cross-sectional study.

Children are in contact with local environments, which may affect respiratory symptoms and allergic sensitization. We aimed to assess the effect of the environment and the walkability surrounding schools on lung function, airway inflammation and autonomic nervous system activity. Data on 701 children from 20 primary schools were analysed. Lung function, airway inflammation and pH from exhaled breath condensate were measured. Pupillometry was performed to evaluate autonomic activity. Land use composition and walkability index were quantified within a 500 m buffer zone around schools. The propor

Statins and the autonomic nervous system.

Statins (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase inhibitors) reduce plasma cholesterol and improve endothelium-dependent vasodilation, inflammation and oxidative stress. A 'pleiotropic' property of statins receiving less attention is their effect on the autonomic nervous system. Increased central sympathetic outflow and diminished cardiac vagal tone are disturbances characteristic of a range of cardiovascular conditions for which statins are now prescribed routinely to reduce cardiovascular events: following myocardial infarction, and in hypertension, chronic kidney disease, heart failure and

Mechanisms underlying the neuronal-based symptoms of allergy.

Persons with allergies present with symptoms that often are the result of alterations in the nervous system. Neuronally based symptoms depend on the organ in which the allergic reaction occurs but can include red itchy eyes, sneezing, nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, coughing, bronchoconstriction, airway mucus secretion, dysphagia, altered gastrointestinal motility, and itchy swollen skin. These symptoms occur because mediators released during an allergic reaction can interact with sensory nerves, change processing in the central nervous system, and alter transmission in sympathetic, parasympathe

Modulation of amoebic hepatic abscess by the parasympathetic system.

The neuro-immune network, in which the vagus nerve is involved, provides feedback between its afferent branches for signalling central nervous system from sites of injury through cytokines and its efferent branches, which release acetylcholine, an anti-inflammatory neurotransmitter. For gain insight into the parasympathetic mechanisms participating in the inflammatory response in the liver, we studied the effects of a vagotomy on the innate immune response in hamsters with amoebic liver abscess. At 7 days post-infection, compared to the control, liver parasympathectomy resulted in a larger abs

Cardiovascular and respiratory dynamics during normal and pathological sleep.

Sleep is an active and regulated process with restorative functions for physical and mental conditions. Based on recordings of brain waves and the analysis of characteristic patterns and waveforms it is possible to distinguish wakefulness and five sleep stages. Sleep and the sleep stages modulate autonomous nervous system functions such as body temperature, respiration, blood pressure, and heart rate. These functions consist of a sympathetic tone usually related to activation and to parasympathetic (or vagal) tone usually related to inhibition. Methods of statistical physics are used to analyz

Intrinsic differences among spatially distinct neural crest stem cells in terms of migratory properties, fate determination, and ability to colonize the enteric nervous system.

We have systematically examined the developmental potential of neural crest stem cells from the enteric nervous system (gut NCSCs) in vivo to evaluate their potential use in cellular therapy for Hirschsprung disease and to assess differences in the properties of postmigratory NCSCs from different regions of the developing peripheral nervous system (PNS). When transplanted into developing chicks, flow-cytometrically purified gut NCSCs and sciatic nerve NCSCs exhibited intrinsic differences in migratory potential and neurogenic capacity throughout the developing PNS. Most strikingly, gut NCSCs m
