Pathology of chronic A-V Block.

Study of 177 cases of permanent A-V block shows idiopathic bilateral bundle branch fibrosis to be the commonest single cause (33%). This entity covers a spectrum of localised loss of conduction fibres in the proximal left bundle branch and bifurcating main bundle (Lev's disease) to moore periphery loss of conduction fibres in the bundle branches alone (Lenègre's disease). The aetiological factors in idiopathic bundle branch fibrosis are still obscure. Ischaemic damage is responsible for 17% of cases and are usually patients who have survived destruction of the bundle branches in septal infarct

Chondro-osseous pathology in the chondrodystrophies.

The majority of chondrodystrophies are associated with distinct abnormalities in chondro-osseous histopathology. In some disorders, the pathological abnormalities are characteristic and can be used as diagnostic criteria, in other instances the morphological abnormalities are not specific, and in still others, no abnormality in chondro-osseous morphology is present. In this paper, the chondro-osseous histopathology and ultrastructure of a number of chondrodystrophies are reviewed to illustrate the different pathogenetic mechanisms involved in each of these disorders.

Postoperative pathology of congenital heart disease.

Complete and unselected data concerning the postoperative pathology of congenital heart disease are presented for the first time. This study was based on 2,365 autopsies performed at the Children's Hospital Medical Center, Boston, in the 9 years from 1966 through 1974. Of these, 586 autopsies (25 percent) revealed congenital heart disease--238 performed in medically treated patients (41 percent) and 348 in surgically treated patients (59 percent). Tetralogy of Fallot, including cases with pulmonary outflow tract atresia and other associated malformations, was the congenital heart disease most …

Renal biopsy pathology in Wegener's granulomatosis.

Eighteen renal biopsies from 10 patients with active generalized Wegener's granulomatosis (GWG), with GWG in remission on therapy, and with active localized Wegener's granulomatosis (LWG) have been examined by light and electron microscopy. In all 9 patients with active GWG, light microscopy revealed focal and segmental glomerulonephritis. Electron microscopy revealed subepithelial basement membrane densities resembling immune complex deposits in two biopsies from patients with active GWG. In biopsies from patients on cytotoxic therapy, there was no active inflammatory process, but focal glome

Concentric laminated bodies in muscle pathology.

Concentric laminated bodies are described in five cases (one case previously reported and four new ones) of various muscle diseases. A general review of previous reports on these structures is made. They appear to be unspecific bodies generally noticed in abnormal skeletal muscle in various disorders; nevertheless they were found in normal muscle fibres of the mothers of children affected by myopathy. They have a complex filamentous structure. According to the authors, their myofilamentous nature is uncertain but seems more probable than a mitochondrial or lipidic one.
