Transcranial direct current stimulation eliminates the own-age bias as indexed by the face inversion effect for own- versus other-age faces.

We investigate individuals' reduced ability to recognize faces of other ages, a phenomenon known as the Own-Age Bias (OAB). This study utilized a double-blind, between-subjects design in which anodal tDCS (10 minutes duration, 1.5 mA intensity, targeting the Fp3 location) was applied to disrupt the face inversion effect (FIE), which reflects higher recognition performance for upright compared to upside-down faces. Young adults participated in an old/new recognition task, where upright and inverted 'own-age' faces (19-30 years) and 'other-age' faces (older, 69-80 years) were presented. In the s

Electrophysiological correlates of detection and identification awareness for digits and letters.

A central feature of consciousness is the association between external events and subjective experiences of content. These experiences range from low level (detection) to high level (identification). For example, a visual experience may range from seeing something on a computer screen (detection) to seeing the digit 3 (identification). In research, neural processes that correlate with these experiences are called neural correlates of consciousness (NCCs). In vision, a candidate NCC is the visual awareness negativity (VAN) that is derived from event-related potentials, occurring about 200 ms af

Limited effects of action on ensemble processing.

Previous research has shown that production of an action toward a visual stimulus may prioritize features of that stimulus for a brief period of time. One recent report has suggested that such an action effect specifically influences ensemble processing - the extraction of summary statistics from a display of multiple items. In the present study we replicate the results that led to that conclusion by having participants assess the mean size of elements in an ensemble after having made an action to either a small or large object. The size of the acted-on object biased the ensemble judgment, but

A Comparison of Transposed-Character Effect Between Chinese and Japanese Speakers: Processing Position Information of Hanzi and Kanji Characters.

Transposed-letter (TL) effect implies that TL pseudowords (e.g., mnokey) are more likely to be recognized as their base words (e.g., monkey) than substituted-letter nonwords (e.g., markey). Compared to TL effect studies, transposed-character (TC) effect studies on logograms, such as Chinese Hanzi and Japanese Kanji, remain limited. This study compared the TC effect in Chinese and Japanese speakers through two experiments. Experiment 1 is a single-word lexical decision task, in which 20 Chinese and 21 Japanese speakers were presented the same two-character stimuli, including TC pseudowords (e.g

Grasping at the organization of object knowledge: testing different object-related dimensions as organizational principles of ventral temporal cortex.

In our daily lives we encounter a myriad of things with which we interact when navigating our environment. Mental representations of these things are computed and stored in our brains to be manipulated in support of cognition. Several proposals have been put forth on how such representations are organized in the brain - and specifically within ventral temporal cortex (VTC), which is thought to support object recognition. Some propose that the organization of mental representations tracks the animacy status of target stimuli in a continuous way: high-animacy stimuli (e.g., chimps) are represent

Expanding the stimulus domain: Co-occurrence of motion and body-category selectivity in the macaque ventral STS.

The primate Superior Temporal Sulcus (STS) plays a pivotal role in the recognition of bodies and their actions, which is essential for survival and social interaction with conspecifics. Here, we show that, surprisingly, a sizable proportion of macaque middle ventral STS units are selective for static bodies and random dot motion. They show a faithful representation of random dot motion direction, with motion directions differing by 180 degrees being represented distinctly, although responding more strongly to complex optic flow patterns. This aligns with an fMRI experiment in which we show tha

Comparison of learning text vs. picture symbol AAC representations for young children on the autism spectrum.

Children on the autism spectrum1 with minimal speech are generally provided with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems that represent vocabulary using picture symbols (i.e., color line drawings). However, there has been minimal research investigating the comparative effectiveness of picture symbols vs. other types of symbol representation (e.g., text) in supporting the communication of children on the autism spectrum. Using a single case adapted alternating treatments experimental design, the current study compared learning of picture symbol and text representations, measure

Response Priming Accounts for Self-Prioritization Effects.

Self-prioritization effects found in label-shape matching tasks have been demonstrated extensively. Participants are faster to match label-shape label-shape stimuli against a prelearned mapping, the more self-related the label is. The effect is thought to be driven by special cognitive treatment, saliency, or attentional prioritization of self-referential stimuli. However, the exact underlying mechanism remains elusive. We propose an alternative explanation, namely that self-related labels facilitate matching performance by inducing the so-called self-positivity bias (people tend to represent

Task-irrelevant semantic grouping influences attentional allocation.

High-level features of objects, such as meaning, bias attention even when task-irrelevant. We hypothesize that task-irrelevant semantic features bias attention via a grouping mechanism, organizing visual input by semantic relatedness in a manner similar to low-level grouping. Specifically, when presented with a task-irrelevant visual array of items, visual search is more efficient within a group of semantically related items. Participants were shown four stimuli of either color squares (low-level grouping), grayscale real-world objects (high-level grouping), or color real-world objects (low- a

When affordances are not universal: The negative compatibility effect is modulated by task type and spatial association.

Humans prepare motor actions when perceiving objects that afford specific behaviors, highlighting the tight link between perception and action. For example, seeing a graspable object like a mug can trigger hand movements aligned to its handle - a phenomenon known as the object affordance effect. Vainio et al. (Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology 64, 1094-1110, 2011) demonstrated this can produce a negative compatibility effect (NCE). This occurs when a spatially compatible prime object eliciting an affordance (e.g., a mug), but to be ignored, precedes a target requiring a spatial resp

Features without their locations in visual working memory: Evidence from change-detection tasks.

A fundamental question in visual working memory research is whether memories are comprised of collections of features, or are feature-bound object-based representations. The role of location has been particularly important, as many theories posit that location is a necessary feature to which others are bound. We employ novel variants of change-detection tasks to test the possibility that the features of an object can be stored in visual working memory even without a corresponding memory for their studied locations. In Experiment 1 memory capacity for the colors of studied items was higher than

Line drawings as a tool to probe edge sensitivity in natural scenes.

To interact with the world effectively, the human visual system must extract meaningful features from visual scenes. One key feature are edges, luminance or texture discontinuities in two-dimensional (2D) images that often correspond to object boundaries in three-dimensional scenes. Edge sensitivity has traditionally been studied with well-controlled stimuli and binary choice tasks, but it is unclear how well these insights transfer to real-world behavior. Recent studies have extended this approach using natural images but typically retained binary button presses. In this study, we extend the

Impaired neural discrimination of regular words from pseudowords in dyslexic adults as revealed by fast periodic visual stimulation.

We used Fast Periodic Visual Stimulation with EEG recordings to assess the sensitivity of adults with dyslexia to fine-grained psycholinguistic variations of letter strings: lexicality and orthographic regularity. Dyslexic and non-dyslexic university students watched 60-s streams of stimuli presented at 10 Hz with deviant items (words) inserted periodically (1/8, at 1.25 Hz). While there was no overall difference in neural response between groups at the base stimulation frequency (10 Hz), individuals with dyslexia showed significantly reduced 1.25 Hz discrimination response for regular and irr

Where there is no object formation, there is no perceptual organization: Evidence from the configural superiority effect.

Object formation is considered the aim of perceptual organization, but such a proposition has been neglected in empirical studies. In the current study, we investigated the role of object formation in configural superiority. Essentially, discrimination on bar orientations was enhanced by adding a right angle to each of the bars. Such facilitation is due to the emergent feature (EF) of closure formed by combining the bars with right angles. To study object formation, visual stimuli were generated by random dot stereograms to form objects or holes in 3D. Behaviorally, we found that the EF of clo

The neural determinants of beauty.

The perception of faces correlates with activity in a number of brain areas, but only when a face is perceived as beautiful is the medial orbitofrontal cortex (mOFC) also engaged. Here, we enquire whether it is the emergence of a particular pattern of neural activity in face perceptive areas during the experience of a face as beautiful that determines whether there is, as a correlate, activity in mOFC. Seventeen subjects of both genders viewed and rated facial stimuli according to how beautiful they perceived them to be while the activity in their brains was imaged with functional magnetic res

Neural Differentiation is Moderated by Age in Scene-Selective, But Not Face-Selective, Cortical Regions.

The aging brain is characterized by neural dedifferentiation, an apparent decrease in the functional selectivity of category-selective cortical regions. Age-related reductions in neural differentiation have been proposed to play a causal role in cognitive aging. Recent findings suggest, however, that age-related dedifferentiation is not equally evident for all stimulus categories and, additionally, that the relationship between neural differentiation and cognitive performance is not moderated by age. In light of these findings, in the present experiment, younger and older human adults (males a

Using immersive virtual reality to modify body image.

We tested the efficacy of a training programme, delivered in virtual reality (VR), to modify the perceptual boundary between what participants classify as a fat versus a thin body. Three cohorts of 20 female volunteers with high body image concerns were recruited to two intervention groups and one control group. All participants completed a 4-day training programme in VR where they categorised a series of 3D models as either thin or fat; one intervention group was presented with the stimuli briefly, while the other group had no time limits imposed. Both intervention groups were given inflation

Three-systems for visual numerosity: A single case study.

Humans possess the remarkable capacity to assess the numerosity of a set of items over a wide range of conditions, from a handful of items to hundreds of them. Recent evidence is starting to show that judgments over such a large range is possible because of the presence of three mechanisms, each tailored to specific stimulation conditions. Previous evidence in favour of this theory comes from the fact that discrimination thresholds and estimation reaction times are not constants across numerosity levels. Likewise, attention is capable of dissociating the three mechanisms: when healthy adult ob

Dynamic sustained attention markers differentiate atypical development: The case of Williams syndrome and Down's syndrome.

Impaired sustained attention is considered an important factor in determining poor functional outcomes across multiple cognitive and behavioural disorders. Sustained attention is compromised for both children with Williams syndrome (WS) and Down's syndrome (DS), but specific difficulties remain poorly understood because of limitations in how sustained attention has been assessed thus far. In the current study, we compared the performance of typically developing children (N = 99), children with WS (N = 25), and children with DS (N = 18), on a Continuous Performance Task - a standard tool for me

Learning Lexical Information Depends Upon Task, Learning Approach, and Reader Subtype.

Learning to read relies upon the integration of phonological, orthographic, and semantic information. However, no studies have investigated how children with varying reading abilities learn phonological-orthographic (PO) and semantic aspects of novel words as a function of both learning approach (LA; e.g., learning new words in isolation or context) and outcome (fluency or comprehension). In this study, 45 children participated in three tasks that differentially tested PO and semantic attributes of novel pseudo-words learned through two learning approaches. Children were classified into groups
