One hundred and six cases of synbrachydactyly, 63 cases of constriction band syndrome and 69 cases of cleft hand complex were clinically and roentgenologically studied and the following results were obtained. Synbrachydactyly is a group of hand anomalies in which the bone reduction appears transversely, and its severest form is a hand missing all the hand bones and the distal portion of the forearm, and with rudimentary digits on the stump. The association of dermal syndactyly or pectoralis muscle defect frequently seen in the milder cases of synbrachydactyly would be a secondary change to mes

CONTEXT: The prevalence of shoulder pain among competitive swimmers is high, but no guidelines exist to reduce shoulder injuries. Elucidating differences between swimmers with and without shoulder pain can serve as a basis for the development of a program to prevent shoulder injury that might lead to pain and dysfunction.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether physical characteristics, exposure, or training variables differ between swimmers with and without shoulder pain or disability.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
SETTING: Multisite swimming centers.
PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: A total of 2

Poland's syndrome (PS; OMIM 173800) is a rare congenital syndrome which consists of absence or hypoplasia of the pectoralis muscle. Other features can be variably associated, including rib defects. On the affected side other features (such as of breast and nipple anomalies, lack of subcutaneous tissue and skin annexes, hand anomalies, visceral, and vertebral malformation) have been variably documented. To date, association of PS with central nervous system malformation has been rarely reported remaining poorly understood and characterized. We report a left-sided PS patient carrying a de novo 1

BACKGROUND: Surgical management in laryngeal carcinoma remains a challenge with countless unexpected complications. Great vessel anomalies such as anomaly of the innominate artery carry high risk of morbidity and mortality if not managed properly.
METHODS: We present our first experience with an aberrant innominate artery during total laryngectomy which complicated the whole surgical procedure and tracheostoma placement.
RESULTS: We decided to place a pectoralis major muscle flap to separate and cover up the aberrant vessel from the trachea and end-stoma which ultimately did not lead to majo

Primary chest wall abscess occurring after blunt chest trauma is rare. We present the case of a 50-year-old woman who presented with a swelling in her left breast. The patient had experienced blunt chest trauma 2 months back. Needle aspiration revealed pus formation in the patient's chest. Computed tomography revealed a mass in the lower region of the left mammary gland, with thickening of the parietal pleura and skin and fracture of the fifth rib under the abscess. Following antibiotic administration and irrigation of the affected region, surgical debridement was performed. During surgery, we

A 74-year-old man who had been receiving warfarin for atrial fibrillation, underwent emergency thrombectomy. A central venous catheter (CVC) was inserted via the left subclavian vein, and heparin was administered to prevent preoperative and postoperative thrombotic events. After an uneventful thrombectomy, the patient was transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU). On the second postoperative day, the patient developed syncope and his blood pressure and oxygen saturation decreased. A computed tomography (CT) revealed a huge hematoma under the pectoralis major muscle. The patient was then tre

A young Somali immigrant presents with a two-year history of a large, firm, painful right anterolateral chest wall sternal mass. The patient denied any history of trauma or infection at the site and did not have a fever, erythematous lesion at the site, clubbing, or lymphadenopathy. A lateral chest radiograph demonstrated a low density mass isolated to the subcutaneous soft tissue overlying the sternum, ribs and clavicle. Computed tomography (CT) with contrast demonstrated a cystic lesion in the right anterolateral chest wall deep to the pectoralis muscle. Enhanced CT of the chest demonstrated

Reconstruction in head and neck surgery has been greatly advanced with the use of the pectoralis major and trapezius myocutaneous flaps. Most surgical defects can be repaired with one of these flaps alone, or in conjunction with cutaneous flaps. Specific problems, however, occur that cannot be successfully reconstructed by these standard flaps. The traditional scalp flaps are cutaneous flaps. Use of these flaps is limited because of their shortened arc of rotation and accompanying forehead deformity. Three patients underwent reconstruction with a parietal occipital nape of neck myocutaneous fl

INTRODUCTION: Upper limb spasticity can be responsible for several complications (e.g., pain, spasms, contractures, deformity, decreased or lost motor control), which can have a negative impact on functional independence and the quality of life of patients. Chemodenervation with botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) is a first-line treatment of focal spasticity in the upper limb (UL). However, shoulder muscles were not included in the classical pivotal BoNT-A studies, leaving a knowledge gap regarding the application of intra-muscular BoNT-A in the spasticity management of this anatomical area compa

Breast muscle myopathies such as White striping and Wooden breast represent a major challenge for the poultry industry due to the deterioration of breast meat quality induced by these myopathies. Previous research has demonstrated that oxidative stress and subsequent oxidative damage in the Pectoralis major muscle were predisposing factors for the development of breast muscle myopathies. More specifically, research has shown that myopathic muscle content of histidine-containing dipeptides such as carnosine that is well-known for its antioxidant properties was almost entirely depleted, exposing

PURPOSE: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is the most common non-musculoskeletal manifestation of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM). Identification of body composition change may enable early intervention to improve prognosis. We investigated muscle quantity and quality derived from cross-sectional imaging in IIM, and its relationship to ILD severity.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study assessing IIM of ILD patients (n = 31) was conducted. Two datasets separated in time were collected, containing demographics, biochemical data, pulmonary function testing and thoracic CT data. Morphomi

BACKGROUND: Subpectoral implant placement has traditionally been favored in implant-based breast reconstruction owing to concerns regarding soft tissue coverage. Advances in surgical techniques and use of acellular dermal matrix have increased interest in prepectoral placement, but more evidence on postoperative complications is needed. We compared complication rates between prepectoral and subpectoral implant placement using target trial emulation.
METHODS: We included patients who underwent implant-based breast reconstruction at three Danish hospitals between 2018 and 2024. Outcomes were ob

BACKGROUND: Management of the male pectoral region to obtain a natural but athletic contour through liposuction is constantly changing, but no single method can avoid all long-term problems, such as gynecomastia with eventual loss of pectoral definition, fat graft asymmetry, and/or unnatural definition.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this article was to describe a surgical technique to improve the male pectoral region through liposuction in specific areas, muscular volumization with objectively established fat volumes based on intracompartmental pressure measurements, and the management and preventio

BACKGROUND: Two-stage implant-based breast reconstruction remains the most commonly used technique for rebuilding a breast. Subpectoral implant placement minimizes complications, such as capsular contracture, implant visibility, malposition, and extrusion. Nevertheless, it is associated with high animation deformity (AD). Prepectoral reconstruction eliminates AD but is subject to a higher risk of implant extrusion and visibility. In this prospective, single-center study we present a new technique aimed to create a new hybrid pocket in which the upper portion of the implant is placed subcutaneo

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, inflammatory disease affecting the apocrine glands of the axillary, groin, and mammary regions with significant physical and psychosocial sequelae. Surgical excision of the affected tissue is the criterion standard treatment. Advanced cases of axillary HS are associated with high rates of recurrence and require extensive surgical resection with challenging reconstruction associated with risk of postoperative complications. The most effective method for reconstruction of the axilla after excision of HS is yet to be identified.

BACKGROUND: Correction of gynecomastia in males is a frequently performed aesthetic procedure. Various surgical options involving the removal of excess skin, fat, or glandular tissue have been described. However, poor aesthetic outcomes, including a flat or depressed pectoral area, limit the success of these techniques.
OBJECTIVES: The authors sought to determine patient satisfaction with the results of upper chest augmentation by direct intrapectoral fat injection in conjunction with surgical correction of gynecomastia.
METHODS: In this prospective study, 26 patients underwent liposuction a
