AI-peer integrated feedback in second language writing classes: exploring students' engagement and writing performance.

While a considerable body of research has focused on examining the efficacy of peer feedback or AI-generated feedback in L2 writing, limited research has investigated the effect of the combination of AI and peer feedback on students' engagement and their writing performance. To address this gap, the present study adopted a mixed-methods design. A 10-week feedback intervention was implemented with 122 Chinese EFL students over a 12-week study period: the experimental group (n = 61) received AI-peer integrated feedback, whereas the control group (n = 61) engaged in conventional peer feedback. Presence of a social peer enhances acquisition of remifentanil self-administration in male rats.

BACKGROUND: Social peers influence human drug use at every stage of addiction. Using a dual-compartment apparatus that allows for limited social contact, recent work has shown that cocaine self-administration is enhanced when two rats are trained to self-administer at the same time compared to rats trained alone or trained in the presence of a saline self-administration control peer. The current study measured social influence on self-administration of the short-acting opioid remifentanil using a dual-compartment operant conditioning chamber. METHODS: Adult male rats were placed in one of fiv

"Since I got the education, I feel like a kind of warrior": a qualitative study of participant perspectives and preferences about Sauti ya Vijana, a mental health intervention for young people with HIV in Tanzania.

Adolescents and young adults with HIV (AYAWH) face challenges with medication adherence and are at risk of mental health (MH) difficulties. Sauti ya Vijana (SYV, The Voice of Youth) is a co-created, peer-led, group-based MH intervention designed to address these needs. This study aimed to: (1) evaluate how participation in SYV impacted AYAWH's lives in Tanzania and (2) explore AYAWH perspectives and preferences of the intervention. The SYV trial was conducted across four regions of Tanzania. Trial participants randomized to the intervention arm were purposefully recruited for focus group discu

The relationship between deviant peer affiliation and psychological distress among college students: a moderated mediation model.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the mechanisms linking deviant peer affiliation to psychological distress among college students. METHODS: A sample of 900 college students completed measures of deviant peer affiliation, stressful life events, perceived social support, and psychological distress (depression, anxiety, and stress). RESULTS: (1) deviant peer affiliation significantly predicted higher levels of psychological distress, (2) this association was partially mediated by stressful life events, and (3) perceived social support moderated the relationship between stressful life events and ps

Strengthening family medicine through coaching-informed peer support: a pilot program evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Primary care physicians are facing elevated levels of burnout and often struggle to find joy in their work, with fewer physicians choosing primary care as a career. Peer coaching offers a way to enhance professional fulfillment and job satisfaction by fostering connection and support among physicians. In this study, we evaluated a pilot coaching-informed peer support program for family physicians in Ontario. Our evaluation explored whether the program helped increase joy in practice, strengthen professional well-being, and reduce burnout. METHODS: In the Peers for Joy program, phy

Testing the Efficacy of 2 Interventions to Improve Health Outcomes and Quality of Life Among Rural Older Adults Living With HIV: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Rural people living with HIV in the United States have higher mortality rates and lower rates of HIV suppression compared to nonrural people living with HIV. In addition, compared to younger people living with HIV, older people living with HIV face numerous challenges to maintaining health and well-being. However, few interventions have targeted health or quality-of-life outcomes in rural older people living with HIV. OBJECTIVE: This randomized controlled trial will evaluate the efficacy of 2 remotely delivered interventions-supportive-expressive peer social support groups and str

"They recognize me as a doctor": A peer mobilisation training programme to promote oral HIV self-testing and referral for acute HIV infection screening among gay and bisexual men and transgender women in coastal Kenya, an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Targeted peer mobilisation can improve access to HIV testing and care and may impact onward HIV transmission. We describe a qualitative exploration of the experience with a peer mobilisation training programme for oral HIV self-testing (OST) and referral for acute HIV infection (AHI) testing among gay and bisexual men (GBMSM) and transgender women (TGW) in coastal Kenya. METHODS: The training programme covered five modules: 1) safe sex, 2) OST, 3) AHI, 4) HIV partner notification services, and 5) mobilisation skills. Mobilisers attended two training sessions and weekly meetings be

Adaptation of problem-solving therapy for primary care to prevent late-life depression in Goa, India: the 'DIL' intervention.

BACKGROUND: Depression in late life is a major, yet unrecognized public health problem in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The dearth of specialist resources, together with the limited ability of current depression treatments to avert years lived with disability, underscores the need for preventive interventions that can be delivered by lay health workers in primary care settings. We describe the development of an intervention for the indicated prevention of depression in older adults at risk due to subsyndromal symptoms, attending rural and urban public primary care clinics in Goa, I

Enhancing Recruitment of Adolescents Aged 16-18 Years in a Web-Based Peer Network Study Through Financial Reimbursements: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Peers are known to influence the health behaviors and attitudes of adolescents, yet recruitment of these networks is challenging. Previous studies have used web-based respondent-driven sampling methods to recruit this population, yet none have experimentally investigated the impact of financial reimbursements. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to (1) compare the effectiveness of two financial reimbursement strategies for recruiting adolescents and their peer networks and (2) explore factors associated with successfully recruiting peers. METHODS: A parallel-design randomized controlled

Effects of a Peer Support Programme on Medication Adherence and Subjective Recovery in Individuals with Schizophrenia: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

Peer support is increasingly recognised in schizophrenia care, but evidence of its effects on medication adherence and recovery remains limited. This study examined a structured, face-to-face peer support programme in community mental health centres. A non-randomised quasi-experimental time-series study allocated 40 participants by centre to intervention and comparison groups, assessed at baseline, post-intervention, and 9-month follow-up. The intervention comprised eight peer-led group sessions delivered under a structured framework and professional supervision. Outcomes were assessed using t

Peer-led public service announcement creation workshops for adolescent sexual and reproductive health education in Kenya.

Public service announcements (PSAs) are a type of media campaign aimed at creating awareness or influencing behavioral change among viewers. PSAs have been used to address a range of health issues aimed at varying populations and have frequently and successfully been used to target adolescents. Focus groups are conducted with adolescents to elicit ideas and topics, but the PSAs themselves are created by external media companies. In addition, few published studies describe the methods of their peer-led programming. The Maneno Yetu study aimed to fill these gaps by providing descriptions of our

'I went for rehab many times and it never worked, but the harm reduction process has given me renewed hope'. Perceptions on the effectiveness of harm reduction and community-based opioid substitution therapy.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: The accessibility of opioid substitution therapy (OST), one of the recommended treatments for opioid dependence, remains low. This study sought to explore the perceived effectiveness of OST from the perspectives of peer outreach workers and OST clients in a community-based harm reduction programme. METHODS: The research was done within the Community-Oriented Substance Use Programme (COSUP) in Tshwane, South Africa. Fifteen peer educators (13 males and 2 females) took part in two focus group discussions. Thereafter, there were semi-structured interviews in which 15 OST clients

"A problem shared is half solved" - a qualitative assessment of barriers and facilitators to adolescent retention in HIV care in western Kenya.

Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV, ages 10-19) are retained in care at low rates, resulting in poor clinical outcomes. We investigated barriers and facilitators to retention experienced by perinatally infected ALHIV in western Kenya. This qualitative study purposefully sampled hospitalized ALHIV (engaged and not currently engaged in care), ALHIV engaged in outpatient care, and caregivers of ALHIV. In total, 116 ALHIV and caregivers participated in interviews or focus group discussions. Challenges related to the effects of both stigma and poverty at multiple socio-ecological levels pose the gr

Self-reported acne severity, treatment, and belief patterns across multiple racial and ethnic groups in adolescent students.

Acne vulgaris is a common condition among adolescents regardless of age, gender, and race. We compare the frequency, severity, help-seeking behavior, treatment, and beliefs about acne among students based on race, ethnicity, gender, and age. Anonymous surveys were administered to 1,214 students aged 10-19 years of varied gender, race, and ethnicity in public middle and high schools in New Jersey. Results showed the frequency and severity of acne were high (76% and 65%, respectively) and more prevalent in white compared to non-white respondents (RR = 1.13, 95% CI = 1.04-1.24 and RR = 1.22, 95%
