Memory and executive functions in adults with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and chronic tic disorder.

INTRODUCTION: The main aim of the current study was to assess whether adults with either Tourette syndrome (TS) or chronic tic disorder (CTD) show a similar neuropsychological profile. Neuropsychological investigations of tic disorders have been mostly focused on children, mainly because symptoms peak during that period. Little has been carried out on adults, even if a significant proportion of the tic population experience moderate or marked levels of tic frequency throughout adulthood. Still, it is not clear whether neuropsychological performances are affected to the same degree in adults wi

A placebo controlled study of flumazenil in bronchoscopic procedures.

METHODS: A double-blind, randomized, placebo controlled trial of the efficacy of flumazenil was conducted in 22 consecutive patients admitted for bronchoscopy. Sedation was induced by individually titrated amounts of intravenous diazepam (mean +/- s.d., 15.75 +/- 4.4 mg). Post bronchoscopy, patients received up to 1 mg of the benzodiazepine antagonist flumazenil (Anexate) or placebo intravenously. Clinical scores for the degree of sedation, orientation in time and space, co-operation and anterograde amnesia were used. These, together with three psychometric tests were performed twice prior to

Studies on psychomotor performance in healthy volunteers after diazepam, propranolol and alcohol given alone or in combination.

The effects of diazepam, propranolol or alcohol alone or in combination with each other were examined in ten normal healthy volunteers on tests of psychomotor function. Results showed impaired psychomotor performance persisting upto 4-5 h when the aforementioned agents given singly were tested on simple reaction time (SRT), multiple choice reaction time (MCRT) and critical flicker fusion frequency (CFFF) tasks. Digit cancellation task (DCT) was similarly affected by diazepam and alcohol only. No summation of adverse effects on psychomotor performance was noted when a combination of diazepam an

Excretion of psychoactive drugs into breast milk. Pharmacokinetic principles and recommendations.

The postpartum period is a time of great physical and emotional changes. The incidence of psychiatric illness is higher in this period than at any other time in a women's life. Therefore, the question of whether women receiving psychotropic drugs should continue breast feeding is an important one. Drug excretion in breast milk depends mostly on passive diffusion of the unionised unbound drug. Passive diffusion is affected mainly by the drug disposition in lactating mothers, by the physicochemical properties of the molecule and by the protein and lipid contents of breast milk. Indeed, breast mi

Physostigmine fails to reverse clinical, psychomotor, or EEG effects of lorazepam.

Physostigmine salicylate (2.0 mg) or 0.9% NaCl (2.0 ml) was administered intravenously in a double-blind fashion to adult volunteers in an attempt to reverse the effects of a 0.05-mg/kg dose of lorazepam given intravenously 30 min earlier. No other medication affecting the central nervous system was given. No differences were observed between the two groups with regard to the frequency of amnesia, psychomotor impairment, or EEG changes during a period of 4 h. The only significant difference in the level of sedation between the two groups was observed 60 min into the study. This difference is a

Imagery special issue: underestimation of auditory performance in social phobia and the use of audio feedback.

Individuals with social phobia often have specific concerns about how they sound, as well as how they look, in social situations. Additionally, clients with social phobia experience negative self-imagery during anxiety provoking social situations. Their negative self-imagery encompasses a range of modalities including auditory aspects of performance [Hackmann, A., Clark, D. M., & McManus, F. (2000). Recurrent images and early memories in social phobia. Behaviour Research and Therapy, 38, 601-610.]. Other research has shown that clients with social phobia underestimate their social performance,

Determinants of pediatric dental anxiety after comprehensive dental treatments under general anesthesia.

Providing dental treatment to young patients can pose challenges in certain circumstances, particularly when they experience anxiety about dental procedures. For this reason, general anesthesia (GA) is preferred as an alternative treatment for performing dental treatments on children. On the other hand, the use of general anesthesia could potentially increase the risk of developing dental anxiety complications. This study was aimed to explore determinants of pediatric dental anxiety after comprehensive dental treatments under general anesthesia (CDT-GA). In this prospective study, 80 healthy c

Thai Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (Thai-MDAS): cross-cultural adaptation, psychometric validation, and preliminary diagnostic accuracy.

BACKGROUND: Dental anxiety is a prevalent barrier to dental care worldwide. The Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) is a widely used, brief self-report measure with established cross-cultural validity in numerous languages, yet no validated Thai-language version currently exists. This study aimed to cross-culturally adapt the MDAS into Thai (Thai-MDAS) and to evaluate the psychometric properties and diagnostic accuracy of the resulting Thai-MDAS. METHODS: The MDAS was adapted into Thai following the five-stage cross-cultural adaptation guideline, with permission from the original developer.

Theta power reduction and theta-gamma coupling desynchronization are associated with working memory interference and anxiety symptoms in panic disorder: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Theta-gamma coupling (TGC) describes the modulation of gamma oscillations by the theta phasic activity, which is crucial for processes such as the ordering of information during working memory (WM) performance. The mental arithmetic (MA), which involves performing calculations with numbers, is a crucial tool for evaluating and understanding the sensory processing and management abilities of WM. Evaluating TGC may provide greater insight into the neural mechanisms mediating WM deficits in panic disorder (PD). METHODS: Medical and electroencephalography (EEG) records of psychiatric

A proof of concept study on digital interventions for reducing socio-evaluative stress and anxiety in youth.

Youth often struggle with heightened sensitivity to social judgement, increasing their vulnerability to fear in social situations. This study investigates brief digital interventions aimed at regulating cognitive and affective disturbances related to social anxiety, specifically focusing on fear responses in a social-evaluative threat context. One-hundred-twenty healthy youth were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: attention training, detached mindfulness, slow breathing, or an active control condition. To induce social-evaluative threat, participants delivered a public speech after

BACKGROUND: Insomnia is the perception of inadequate, insufficient or non-restorative sleep. Of all sleep-related disorders, insomnia is the most common. It is important to remember that the sleep-wake cycle also plays a central role in the genesis of anxiety and depression. The aim of our study is to evaluate the association between sleep disturbances and anxiety and depression in a group of workers of both sexes who perform night shift work. METHODS: Information on sleep disorders was collected by administering the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) questionnaire. Statistical analysis was conduc

Hyper-volume of eye-contact perception and social anxiety traits.

Eye-contact facilitates effective interpersonal exchange during social interactions, but can be a considerable source of anxiety for individuals with social phobia. However, the relationship between the fundamental spatial range of eye-contact perception and psychiatric traits is, to date, unknown. In this study, I analyzed the eye-contact spatial response bias and the associated pupil response, and how they relate to traits of social interaction disorders. In a face-to-face situation, 21 pairs of subjects were randomly assigned to be either viewers or perceivers. The viewer was instructed to

Assessment of emotional reactivity produced by exposure to virtual environments in patients with eating disorders.

The aim of this study was to assess the usefulness of virtual environments representing situations that are emotionally significant to subjects with eating disorders (ED). These environments may be applied with both evaluative and therapeutic aims and in simulation procedures to carry out a range of experimental studies. This paper is part of a wider research project analyzing the influence of the situation to which subjects are exposed on their performance on body image estimation tasks. Thirty female patients with eating disorders were exposed to six virtual environments: a living-room (neut

Visuo-spatial attention processes in panic disorder with agoraphobia: a pilot study using a visual target discrimination task.

Panic attacks can be observed in a wide range of situations, but most common are those providing complex and unstructured stimulations, suggesting an impairment in attentional processing of visuo-spatial information. This study evaluated agoraphobics' attentional processing of neutral (i.e., not anxiety-provoking) visuo-spatial stimulation. Twelve patients suffering from panic attacks with agoraphobia were compared with 22 normal controls on a computerized visual target discrimination task specifically designed for this study. Psychometric measures assessed the phobic avoidance, the level of d
