Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is produced by a different metabolic disorder than familial periodic paralysis. In the familial disorder, a myopathic cause is well known, but although electromyography can be used to demonstrate the site of the lesion in TPP, such studies are rare in the medical literature and the results are conflicting. In this report, EMG studies were carried out on eight Chinese patients with thyrotoxic periodic paralysis during the attack and the results compared with studies repeated during a remission. Most cases showed a myopathic pattern during an attack of paralys

Four patients suffering form familial periodic paralysis with hypokalaemia (FPP) were subjected untreated to standardized induction of paralysis. The induction was repeated after pre-treatment with the beta receptor blocker propranolol (Inderal). In three of the patients propranolol had no or even a negative effect upon the development of paralysis or upon the fall in serum potassium. In one patient a slight prophylactic gain was achieved. It was not possible to demonstrate any difference in the serum level of glucose or insulin during the induction of paralysis according to whether the patien

5 patients with cerebral anoxia of various etiology had postanoxic coma with the syndrome of periodic synchronous and sterotyped myoclonus first mentioned by Lance and Adams. These authors observed action myoclonus as a sequel to this syndrome which is rarely survived. Most reports have dealt mainly with its bad prognostic significance. Although the localization of action myoclonus has much been discussed, and is still controversial, little attention has been paid to the possible localizing significance of its acute precursor syndrome. Most patients with this type of myoclonus (all in our seri

The article presents data on the clinico-morphological study of three patients suffering from thyrotoxicosis with attacks of periodic paralysis. The muscles obtained by biopsy in two patients at the moment of attack and in one patient--in the absence of attack were investigated by the electron microscopy method. The data obtained make it possible to assume that in the thyrotoxic periodic paralysis the action of the thyroid hormones causes not only impairment of the mineral metabolism, but brings about changes in the structure of the membranes of the sarcolemma and T-system, which leads to dist

Periodic apnea and exercise hypoventilation were observed in a 14-year-old boy. Hyperphagia, obesity, serum hyperosmolality without diabetes insipidus or appropriate thirst, and retardation of growth and sexual development indicated a hypothalamic disorder. Neurologic evaluation was normal except for electroencephalographic changes induced by apnea. Pulmonary function tests, resting arterial blood gases in the wakeful state, and ventilatory response to inhaled CO2 were also normal. Acute hypoxemia and respiratory acidosis occurred with apnea during sleep and with insufficient ventilation durin

The case history of a typical case of hypokalaemic periodic paralysis is described. A 21-year-old male Ugandan African presented with his second attack of complete flaccid tetraplegia. Serum potassium levels, ECG changes ,nd response to therapy were entirely consistent with the diagnosis. Family history was negative. It is possible that this rare disorder has not previously been reported in an African. Possible mechanisms involved in the disorder are briefly discussed.
