[Prevalence of Tannerella forsythensis in subgingival plaque of type 2 diabetic patients].

OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence of Tannerella forsythensis (T. forsythensis) in the subgingival plaque of type 2 diabetes, analyze the re … n mild, moderate group (P < 0.05). There was no T. forsythensis in 6 diabetic patients with healthy periodontium. Logistic regression analysis illustrated that the prevalence of T. forsythensis was associated with simplified oral hygiene index (OHI-S) and diabetic duration (OR = 1.947, OR = 0.873). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of T. forsythensis in type 2 diabe …

Melatonin: potential functions in the oral cavity.

BACKGROUND: Melatonin is synthesized and secreted by the pineal gland and other organs. The pattern of melatonin secretion is controlled by … ave important implications for dental disorders, especially in periodontal disease. Diseases of the periodontium are known to be aggravated by free radicals and by alterations in the immune response to microorganisms that are present in plaque. In response to periodontal inflammation, the blood and salivary levels of melatonin may increase. CONCLUSION: Melato …

Prevalence of horizontal attachment loss in extracted teeth.

OBJECTIVE: Probing attachment level provides useful information on patterns of destruction of the periodontium. It is difficult to detect complex attachment loss in clinics. The purpose of this study was to estimate prevalence of vertical and horizontal attachment loss in extracted teeth. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We collected 10,212 extracted teeth from 130 dentists in Japan. After staining of periodontal membrane with erythrosine, linear loss of vertical and horizontal attachment was measured using a digital caliper. RESULTS: Mean vertical attachment loss varied from 5.3 to 8.6 mm. Incisors ha…

On the role of MT1-MMP, a matrix metalloproteinase essential to collagen remodeling, in murine molar eruption and root growth.

Although the connective tissues of the periodontium are subject to a high turnover rate, no conclusive evidence has yet emerged that periodontal collagen turnover is essential for the eruption of teeth or for root elongation. These processes were studied in mice deficient in MT1-MMP, a membrane type matrix metalloproteinase essential for remodeling of soft tissue-hard tissue interfaces. Mandibular first molars of deficient mice and their wild-type littermates were subjected to stereological analysis in order to assess root length, eruption and the volume density of phagocytosed collagen in per…

Periodontal regeneration with polypeptide growth factors.

Attempts at periodontal regeneration have been plagued by inconsistent results. The failures associated with these procedures are likely due to an insufficient number of cells themselves lacking sufficient activity to produce the supporting structures of the periodontium. Molecular studies have provided insight into the regenerative process by identifying locally acting mediators expressed during healing. These mediators, termed growth factors, may stimulate a wide variety of cellular events, including chemotaxis, proliferation, differentiation, and production of extracellular matrix proteins.…

Non-invasive intravital fluorescent microscopy of the hamster gingiva.

Several attempts have been made to visualize the gingival microcirculation of small animals. Most of these attempts have required surgical procedures without control of the local tissue environment. In our current study of the hamster gingiva, a tissue bath was designed to allow microcirculatory observations of the periodontium of the superior incisors without the need for invasive surgical procedures and with controlled pH and temperature of the bathing solution. Dextrans (m.w. = 70,000 and m.w. = 150,000), bovine serum albumin (mw = 66,210) or a globulin fraction (mw = greater than 450,000 l…

The effect of load duration on long-term recovery of the eruptive function in the rat incisor.

The purpose of this study was to determine the long-term recovery of the normal rate of eruption of the rat incisor following application of loads of similar magnitude but of varying duration. The daily rate of eruption of the continuously growing tooth served as indicator of the functional recovery of its periodontium. The left mandibular incisor was shortened out of occlusion in 34 experimental and 16 control rats. The experimental animals were divided into groups A, B, and C, and continuous loads (19.47 g +/- 0.42 g) were applied to the shortened incisors by means of closed-coil springs for…

A Review of the Functions of Matrix Vesicles in Periodontal Tissues.

Periodontal tissues consist of cementum, periodontal ligaments, and alveolar bone, which provide indispensable support for physiological activities involving mastication, swallowing, and pronunciation. The formation of periodontal tissues requires a complex process, during which a close relationship with biomineralization is noticeable. Alveolar bone and cementum are physically hard, both of which are generated from biomineralization and possess the exact mechanical properties resembling other hard tissues. However, when periodontitis, congenital abnormalities, periapical diseases, and other p

[Risk considerations of periodontal tissues reconstructions in the strategies of orthodontic treatment].

With the increase of adult patients seeking for orthodontic treatment, the influence of periodontal tissue on orthodontic treatment has gradually become the focus. For patients with periodontitis, it is essential to controlling the severity of periodontitis prior to orthodontic treatment. Periodontal disease can cause additional bone loss and make the orthodontic treatment complicated. Reducing the risk of orthodontic treatment in this situation is our major concern. In addition to periodontitis, orthodontic treatment may also cause gingival recession. On the other hand, the alveolar bone defe

Dedifferentiated Fat (DFAT) cells: A cell source for oral and maxillofacial tissue engineering.

Tissue engineering is a promising method for the regeneration of oral and maxillofacial tissues. Proper selection of a cell source is important for the desired application. This review describes the discovery and usefulness of dedifferentiated fat (DFAT) cells as a cell source for tissue engineering. Dedifferentiated Fat cells are a highly homogeneous cell population (high purity), highly proliferative, and possess a multilineage potential for differentiation into various cell types under proper in vitro inducing conditions and in vivo. Moreover, DFAT cells have a higher differentiation capabi

An Injectable System for Local and Sustained Release of Antimicrobial Agents in the Periodontal Pocket.

Periodontitis treatments usually require local administration of antimicrobial drugs with the aim to reduce the bacterial load inside the periodontal pocket. Effective pharmaceutical treatments may require sustained local drug release for several days in the site of interest. Currently available solutions are still not able to fulfill the clinical need for high-quality treatments, mainly in terms of release profiles and patients' comfort. This work aims to fill this gap through the development of an in situ gelling system, capable to achieve controlled and sustained release of antimicrobial ag
