Fatal pulmonary embolism in an unselected series: the possible role of caval filters in prevention.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the possible benefit of inserting a caval filter for the prevention of pulmonary embolism (PE) in an unselected group of patients admitted to hospital. DESIGN: Analysis of clinical data collected prospectively. SETTING: University hospital, Sweden. SUBJECTS: 1391 patients who presented during 1987 435 with deep vein thrombosis (DVT), thrombus in the right atrium or the right ventricle or PE at necropsy; 366 patients shown to have DVT on phlebography; 44 shown to have PE on pulmonary scintigraphy; and 546 patients operated on for hip fractures. OUTCOME MEASURES: Clini…

[Methods of operative interventions in postthrombotic disease of the crus].

Analysed herein are the findings of examination and outcomes of surgical management of 43 patients presenting with crural postthrombotic dis … form twelve months to nine years. Venous haemodynamics was studied by means of duplex scanning and phlebography, with the latter used if indicated. The prevailing role in making appropriate diagnosis was found to belong duplex scanning. Thirty-one patients were subjected to combined surgical procedures. Twelve subjects underwent single-stage operations. The m …

INTRODUCTION: Congenital venous malformations are the most common slow-flow vascular abnormalities during childhood. Although they are usual … on. MRI was employed to determinate the limits of the lesion. We did not perform arteriography, and phlebography was used as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool. Plain X-rays showed phleboliths in most of patients and osseous changes in a group of six patients. Treatment was conservative and palliative using elastic stockings, pain therapy and thromboembolism pr …

An Unusual Case of Persistent Vitelline Vein in a Pediatric Liver Transplant Recipient: A Case Report.

The portal vein is crucial for supplying the liver, and its embryonic development is complex. Variations in portal vein formation can lead to significant surgical challenges, particularly in liver transplantation. Here, we report a unique case of a persistent left portal vein in a 2-year-old patient with Alagille syndrome. During the recipient hepatectomy, the portal vein was found to have an unusual course, traversing behind the pancreas with a more caudal confluence than typical. Although no adverse outcomes occurred during transplant, this variation required a longer and more angular anasto

Balloon angioplasty for symptomatic inferior vena cava aneurysm.

Aneurysms of the inferior vena cava (IVC) are uncommon. Symptomatic patients usually present with thrombosis and venous obstruction. Classification is based on location and the presence or absence of congenital IVC interruption. Treatment options include observation, open surgical resection, and endovascular modalities, of which coil embolization and stent graft placement have previously been described. We report the case of a patient with a 5.0-cm infrarenal IVC aneurysm and associated congenital stenosis who successfully underwent balloon angioplasty. Whereas management should be determined

Unusual Visualization of the Ilium in Lower-Extremity Radionuclide Venography With 99mTc MAA.

A 60-year-old man was admitted with dilated cardiomyopathy, right-sided heart failure, and massive ascites. Tc-labeled macroaggregated albumin radionuclide venography of the lower extremities was performed, which showed stagnated radioactivity in the heart chambers, decreased uptake in the lung, and increased uptake in the proximal main renal veins and hepatic vein. Unexpectedly, radioactive accumulation in the ilium was noted on subsequent images acquired 3 minutes later.

A hybrid technique for ventriculoatrial shunt implantation--technical note.

PURPOSE: The aim of the article is to present the new hybrid technique for ventriculoatrial shunt implantation. METHODS: Two-and-a-half-year-old boy needed ventriculoatrial shunt implantation due to communicating hydrocephalus and impaired absorptive ability of the peritoneum. Because of a complete occlusion of the right internal jugular vein and critical stenosis of a distal part of the left internal jugular vein, the procedure was performed under fluoroscopy guidance in the catheterisation laboratory equipped with a 3-dimensional single plane angiography machine (Philips Allura--The Netherl

Objective duplex ultrasound evaluation of the extracranial circulation in multiple sclerosis patients undergoing venoplasty of internal jugular vein stenoses: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) is a condition associated with multiple sclerosis (MS) and manifested by stenoses in the extracranial venous circulation. There is a need for an objective non-invasive assessment of CCSVI that is able to accurately identify the location of stenoses and quantify physiological changes in blood flows following treatment. METHOD: A duplex ultrasound method, extracranial duplex ultrasound (ECDU), is described where the internal jugular veins (IJVs) and vertebral veins (VVs) were examined in the supine and sitting position before and aft

Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return in patients with pulmonary hypertension.

Anomalous pulmonary venous return is an uncommon congenital malformation, and may be partial or total. Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR) is more common than total anomalous pulmonary venous return, and is often associated with other congenital cardiac anomalies. Whilst many patients with PAPVR remain asymptomatic, some may present in later age with symptoms related to left-to-right shunt, right heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. We report two cases of PAPVR detected on Computed Tomography Pulmonary Angiogram (CTPA) for the work up of pulmonary hypertension. The cases dem
