Seasonal differences in ventricular proliferation of adult Gallotia galloti lizards.

Lizards present neuronal production throughout the telencephalon in their adult state, both naturally and after experimentally induced brain … nd during all seasons in those lizards kept in captivity as compared with wild animals, even though photoperiod and temperature were similar to natural conditions. Our results indicate that cell production in lizards is species-dependent, varies with seasons and is significantly reduced in captive animals.

Evolution of photosensory pineal organs in new light: the fate of neuroendocrine photoreceptors.

Pineal evolution is envisaged as a gradual transformation of pinealocytes (a gradual regression of pinealocyte sensory capacity within a particular cell line), the so-called sensory cell line of the pineal organ. In most non-mammals the pineal organ is a directly photosensory organ, while the pineal organ of mammals (epiphysis cerebri) is a non-sensory neuroendocrine organ under photoperiod control. The phylogenetic transformation of the pineal organ is reflected in the morphology and physiology of the main parenchymal cell type, the pinealocyte. In anamniotes, pinealocytes with retinal cone p…

Seasonal variations in serotonin immunoreactivity and ultrastructure in the pineal organ of the Japanese grass lizard, with special reference to environmental temperature.

The seasonal variations in serotonin immunoreactivity and ultrastructure of the secretory rudimentary photoreceptor cells (SRPC) were studied in the pineal organ of the Japanese grass lizard, Takydromus tachydromoides in relation to the environmental temperature. Our results clearly demonstrated that serotonin immunoreactivity in the lizard pineal organ displayed seasonal variations under an artificial photoperiod of LD 12:12 and natural temperature in the laboratory. Immunoreactivity became intense with increase in temperature from spring to summer, showing the strongest reaction in the summe…

Melatonin and its physiological and therapeutic properties.

Melatonin is a hormone produced mainly by the pineal gland in most vertebrate species, including humans. Recent metabolic, receptor and func … o the length of nights (or dark periods of an imposed light-dark cycle); the hormone thus conveys a photoperiodic message, and functions in an organism as an internal biochemical clock and calendar. Biological actions of melatonin are mediated via specific melatonin receptors, whose distribution in the body is uneven, yet with decisively highest density in th …

Parachlorophenylalanine retards tail regeneration in the gekkonid lizard Hemidactylus flaviviridis exposed to continuous light.

Parachlorophenylalanine (p-CPA) was used for chemical pinealectomy in a study of tail regeneration in the gekkonid lizard, Hemidactylus flav … g-1 has a similar retardation effect to that of complete pineal ablation. The role of the pineal in photoperiodic photoreception, and the effect of p-CPA on serotonin-melatonin biosynthesis and the consequent effects on tail regeneration, are discussed.

Mechanism controlling photostimulated luteinizing hormone secretion is different from preovulatory luteinizing hormone surge in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica).

A so-called "night-interruption" experiment with a 15-min light pulse showed that a sensitive phase for the photoperiodic LH secretion in male Japanese quail extended over a period of 2 hr from 12.5 to 14.5 hr after dawn. Exposure of a 1-hr light pulse at this photosensitive phase to male quail kept under 8L:16D induced the increase of plasma LH concentrations just the same as quail transferred to 16L:8D. In the first few days of photostimulation either by night interruption or by long days, LH concentrations increased at several hours after the photosensitive phase and decreased to the basal …

The sympathetic superior cervical ganglia as "little neuroendocrine brains".

The superior cervical ganglia (SCG) provide sympathetic innervation to the pineal gland, cephalic blood vessels, the choroid plexus, the eye, carotid body and the salivary and thyroid glands. Removal of the ganglia brings about several neuroendocrine changes in mammals, including the disruption of water balance in pituitary stalk-sectioned rats and the alteration of normal photoperiodic control of reproduction and thyroid function in hamsters, ferrets, voles, rams and goats. These effects are commonly attributed to pineal denervation. However, pinealectomy does not always mimic ganglionectomy …

Genetic and molecular networks mediating potato tuber development.

Potato, the world's third most important food crop, is cultivated world-wide for its tubers that store high-energy photoassimilates, which are predominantly induced under short photoperiods with cooler night temperatures. The stored photoassimilates ensure plant survival by vegetative propagation and to support subsequent shoot growth. The leaf-generated main tuberigen signal, StSP6A, upon its transport to stolon, forms tuber-inducing Tuberigen Activation Complex (TAC). Misregulation or redirection of StSP6A transport toward lateral buds contributes to aerial tuber formation, thereby adversely…

Daily and seasonal expression of clock genes in the pituitary of the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax).

The expression of select clock genes (clock, bmal, per1, per2, cry1, cry2) was investigated throughout the day and across the four seasons f … dult sea bass, which are profoundly modified according to the season. We suggest that the effect of photoperiod on clock gene expression may be mediated, at least in part, by melatonin, and that temperature may have a key role adjusting seasonal variations.

Circadian photoreception in vertebrates.

To be adaptively useful, internal circadian clocks must be entrained (synchronized) to daily rhythms in the external world. The entraining p … ive system also controls acute behavioral responses to light (masking), pupillary constriction, and photoperiodic regulation of reproductive state. We review some of the early work on birds and describe new findings that indicate specific roles for retinal rods, cones, and photosensitive retinal ganglion cells in mammals.

Stress responses in tropical sparrows: comparing tropical and temperate Zonotrichia.

Seasonal modulation of the adrenocortical response appears to be ubiquitous in mid- to high-latitude vertebrates but has not been investigat … rthern Zonotrichia. Seasonal differences in tropical Zonotrichia would presumably be independent of photoperiod and thus directly related to such activities as reproduction and feather molt. In addition, we investigated the possible role of binding globulin as a sex steroid binding globulin, as suggested for temperate passerines. Similar to northern congeners …

Pinealectomy increases and exogenous melatonin decreases leptin production in rat anterior pituitary cells: an immunohistochemical study.

Melatonin, the main hormone of the pineal gland, informs the body about the environmental light and darkness regimen, which in turn contributes to the photoperiodic adaptation of several physiological functions. Leptin, the hormone secreted mainly by adipocytes and some other tissues including the pituitary, informs the brain about the mass of adipose tissue, which plays an important role in energy homeostasis. Melatonin has been shown to decrease circulating leptin levels. It is currently not known whether melatonin has an effect on leptin synthesis in the pituitary. The aim of this study was…

Generation of the melatonin endocrine message in mammals: a review of the complex regulation of melatonin synthesis by norepinephrine, peptides, and other pineal transmitters.

Melatonin, the major hormone produced by the pineal gland, displays characteristic daily and seasonal patterns of secretion. These robust and predictable rhythms in circulating melatonin are strong synchronizers for the expression of numerous physiological processes in photoperiodic species. In mammals, the nighttime production of melatonin is mainly driven by the circadian clock, situated in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus, which controls the release of norepinephrine from the dense pineal sympathetic afferents. The pivotal role of norepinephrine in the nocturnal stimulation o…

Otx5 regulates genes that show circadian expression in the zebrafish pineal complex.

The photoneuroendocrine system translates environmental light conditions into the circadian production of endocrine and neuroendocrine signa … us circadian clock. A multisynaptic pathway then relays information about circadian rhythmicity and photoperiod to the pineal organ. The gene cone rod homeobox (crx), a member of the orthodenticle homeobox (otx) family, is thought to regulate pineal circadian activity. In the mouse, targeted inactivation of Crx causes a reduction in pineal gene expression and …

Light deprivation increases plasma levels of melatonin during the first 72 h of life in human infants.

The development of rhythmic melatonin secretion in full-term neonates seems to occur at about 12 weeks of age, but activity of the pineal gland from 1 to 12 weeks of age is not well documented. To determine whether the pineal gland actively secretes melatonin and reacts to photoperiodic information during this period, we analyzed 45 full-term infants exposed to continuous artificial light during 24, 48 and 72 h after birth for treatment of hyperbilirubinemia. During this light treatment, the eyes of the neonates were completely covered to avoid damage, thus the infants were under continuous li…

TIME FOR COFFEE coordinates phase separation and chromatin regulation for salt tolerance.

The circadian clock enhances plant fitness by aligning internal timing with the external photoperiod, but how it coordinates spatiotemporal regulation with chromatin dynamics to improve salt tolerance is not well understood. Here, we show that the clock component TIME FOR COFFEE (TIC) forms biomolecular condensates in response to salt stress, but not to osmotic stress alone. Consistently, tic mutants were hypersensitive to salt stress yet displayed enhanced salt tolerance under 21-hour light-dark cycles matching their shortened circadian period, highlighting the importance of circadian clock i…

Light-Root Microbiome Interactions in Vegetable Crops: From Photoreceptor Signaling to Exudate-Mediated Recruitment.

In protected cultivation, light intensity, spectral quality, red/far-red ratio, photoperiod and diel fluctuation can alter the belowground biological environment by modifying carbon allocation, root architecture, root exudation, nutrient acquisition, immune tone and rhizosphere physicochemistry. Direct community-level evidence in vegetables remains sparse, but targeted experiments on bacterial colonization, arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis, beneficial fungi and root pathogens show that light can condition specific plant-microbe interactions. This review develops a molecular framework for light…

Transcriptomic and lipidomic analysis provide insights into ovarian development of the mud crab Scylla paramamosain under high-temperature and strong illumination conditions.

Environmental factors such as temperature, salinity, illumination intensity, and photoperiod exert profound influences on the physiology and reproduction of aquatic crustaceans. In this study, female mud crabs (Scylla paramamosain) were exposed to combined high-temperature and strong illumination stress (30 °C, 6000 lx) or maintained under control conditions (25 °C, 600 lx) for 30 days. To elucidate the impact of combined high-temperature and strong illumination stress on ovarian development, we conducted integrated analyses of transcriptomic data (RNA-Seq) from the hepatopancreas and ovary, a…
