Increasing evidence on the impact of the different wavelengths of sunlight on the skin demonstrates the need for tailored recommendations of sunscreen according to skin phototype and dermatoses, which is now possible due to advances in the filters and formulations of sunscreens. A selective literature search was performed by an international expert panel, focusing on the type of sunscreen to recommend for photoaging, skin cancers, photodermatoses, pigmentary disorders and skin inflammatory disorders. Protection against ultraviolet (UV)B is especially important for light skin as there is a high

INTRODUCTION: Pigmented fungiform papillae of the tongue is a benign condition frequent in dark skin patients. It usually appears in the second or third decade of life, and it has been reported as autosomal dominant inheritance pattern. The diagnosis is clinical, but dermoscopy could be helpful: a classical rose petal pattern is observed. The pathogenesis is unknown, and no treatments are effective.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 15-year-old girl with a pigmented fungiform papillae and a compatible dermatoscopy pattern.
CONCLUSIONS: Knowing the existence of this entity and its characteri

The introduction of selective photothermolysis by Drs. John Parrish and Rox Anderson in 1983 revolutionized how lasers are used in dermatology. The theory allowed for lasers to be used in a variety of applications both safe and effectively, and the number of applications has only expanded with time. From the first application on vascular birthmarks to more recent applications for acne, this review covers the evolution of lasers from the beginning to where we are headed.

BACKGROUND: Several epidemiological studies have been conducted to understand the relationship between environmental factors (including chronic sun exposure) and clinical signs of pigmented spots. However, no quantitative analysis has focused on the adverse effects of the detailed features of pigmented spots, including their color intensity, size, and number on the cheek. This study was performed to elucidate the adverse effects of environmental factors on clinical signs of pigmented spots.
METHODS: We conducted an epidemiological survey of 102 Japanese women in 2 regions of high and low sun

BACKGROUND: The importance of photographs in social media, the steep rise in popularity of tattoos, and the prominence of individuals with visibly different skin in fashion are likely to be changing the landscape of self- and public perception of birthmarks. Study objectives were to assess the impact of a photoshoot and public exhibition on the self-perception of individuals with extensive birthmarks, and to explore the viewing public's reactions.
METHODS: Thirty individuals with congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) were recruited internationally. Each had a professional photoshoot portrait with

BACKGROUND: Numerous treatments for pigmentary disorders have been used with variable outcomes. Recently, a new radiofrequency (RF) device with minimal pulse duration has been introduced.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a pulsed-type microneedling RF device for treatment of facial pigmentary disorders.
METHODS: Forty-four patients diagnosed with facial melasma or Riehl melanosis received 5 treatments with RF at 2-week intervals, and evaluation was performed at each visits, including 4 and 8 weeks after the last treatment. Treatment outcomes were ev

BACKGROUND: Office workers are consistently exposed to blue light, mainly from sunlight and digital device. Recent studies report that blue light has various harmful effects, including cellular changes via reactive oxygen species. Studies on blue light-induced skin changes have only been conducted in vitro and have not been clinically confirmed.
OBJECTIVE: We provide novel methods to evaluate the effect of the product on the recovery of skin changed by blue light.
METHODS: Internet surveys were conducted for workers in their 20s and 40s regarding exposure time to blue light in various enviro

Cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) is an autoimmune photosensitive disorder that affects the skin. CLE lesions can have signs of skin damage including dyspigmentation, scarring, atrophy and/or alopecia. Disease damage secondary to CLE can be cosmetically disfiguring and causes patients significant distress. While many current treatments for CLE focus primarily on reducing inflammation, there are few options for managing disease damage. Providers currently lack strong guidance on managing CLE damage due to the paucity of literature on this topic. Because of this knowledge gap, we aim to provid

BACKGROUND: Parafunctional oral habits are known to cause deleterious effects on maxillofacial structures. One such effect is traumatic injuries secondary to chewing inanimate objects like pencils. Following trauma, the lead of the pencil has been reported to embed in the soft tissue of the oral cavity, appearing as a grayish pigmentation (graphite tattoo). However, such pigmentation has never been reported in the hard tissue (teeth).
CASE PRESENTATION: We hereby report an interesting, first of its kind case in a four-year-old female child. She had been misdiagnosed and referred for the manag

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous mosaicism is an area of dermatology in which there has been an explosion of knowledge within the current decade. This has led to fundamental changes in the understanding of the conditions in this field, and to an ongoing paradigm shift in the approach to management of mosaic skin disorders.
OBJECTIVES: To lay out the general principles of mosaicism as they are currently understood, summarize the known cutaneous mosaic abnormalities of the skin with associated phenotypic and genotypic information, review the latest trials on targeted therapies and propose guidelines for t
