Fibronectin expression as a marker of hypoxia in asphyxial deaths: A pilot study.

AIM: Asphyxial deaths represent a major diagnostic challenge in forensic practice, as classical morphological signs are nonspecific and may overlap with other causes of sudden death. Fibronectin (FN), an extracellular matrix glycoprotein sensitive to hypoxia, is emerging as a candidate biomarker of oxygen deprivation. We investigated its expression in cardiac tissue from asphyxial deaths compared with traumatic controls. METHODS: We retrospectively collected formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded left ventricular myocardium from autopsies in Palermo and Genoa (2021-2025). The cohort included 54 ca

Pilot Simulation Task Trainer for Prehospital Management of Neck Hemorrhage.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic injuries are the leading cause of death in the U.S. of persons < 45 years of age, with 5-10% of all traumas caused by penetrating neck injuries (PNI). The neck contains several large blood vessels that supply the brain; thus, exsanguination is the leading cause of fatality in PNI. Vascular neck trauma is common in assaults, motor vehicle accidents, battlefields, and sporting events, particularly in ice hockey. There is a general lack of guidance on prehospital management of these injuries, and educating first responders, medics, and sports trainers on how to manage thes

Transbronchial photodynamic therapy for peripheral lung cancer - A pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an established treatment for centrally located early-stage lung cancer but remains limited for peripheral lung cancers in part due to restricted light penetration and the difficulty of precisely positioning optical fibers. Our team developed a novel light delivery technique involving the transbronchial infusion of Lipiodol to induce a waveguide effect, expanding the illumination field. We conducted two sequential pilot clinical trials to evaluate the feasibility and safety of this approach. METHODS: Two single-arm, Phase-0 feasibility studies were con

Nurse-led interventions and care for people with bronchiectasis: a pilot study.

Nurses have the potential to provide care for patients with bronchiectasis by assessing needs and co-ordinating input from other health professionals. Bronchiectasis is a disease that is poorly understood by the public and non-specialists. However, by educating both colleagues and patients, nurses can greatly improve care. This article highlights nursing care delivery to people with bronchiectasis and explores the need for further specialist nurse development. It describes the findings of a UK audit undertaken in December 2024, completed by 72 nurses who provide care and treat patients with br

Incidental Renal Cell Carcinoma in an Active-Duty Fighter Pilot.

BACKGROUND: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a relatively uncommon medical illness among the civilian population and less common within the U.S. Air Force pilot population. While the classic presentation of RCC is macroscopic hematuria, flank pain, and palpable flank mass, these are rarely seen. RCC is often clinically silent and it is not uncommon for RCC to be incidentally discovered in an already highly metastasized state. CASE REPORT: A 44-yr-old male fifth-generation fighter pilot presented with acute chronic lower back pain who was evaluated with routine x-rays, which led to the incidental

Influence of chlamydia infection history on tubal patency: A pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Chlamydia infection is a known risk factor for tubal occlusion and subsequent infertility. A significant proportion of Chlamydia infections are asymptomatic, which can delay diagnosis and allow silent progression of tubal damage. Therefore, identifying a history of Chlamydia infection-even in the absence of symptoms-may help recognize women at risk of tubal involvement. In such cases, it would be justified to perform tubal patency testing to assess potential tubal and pelvic sequelae. Our purpose was to evaluate the relationship of Chlamydia IgG serology with tubal patency as deter

Investigation of sputum volatiles to classify active tuberculosis: A pilot study.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health challenge due in part to limitations in rapid and affordable diagnostics. Current diagnostic methods are time-intensive and often inaccessible in resource-limited settings, emphasizing the urgent need for rapid, low-cost screening approaches. One promising strategy involves the analysis of volatile molecules associated with TB-infection. In this study (n = 100) we identify 14 sputum-derived volatiles and utilize them to construct a machine learning model that classifies samples by TB status with a sensitivity of 90% and a specificity of 86% acros

Multimodal profiling of atherosclerosis: Protocol and pilot data for the AtherOMICS biobank.

Omics technologies enable deep profiling of human atherosclerosis but have mostly been applied in small studies lacking integration with other data modalities. AtherOMICS is a biobanking project linking multiomic atherosclerotic plaque phenotyping with blood biobanking, in vivo imaging, and clinical data. Here, we present the study protocol and show pilot results that demonstrate technical feasibility. Since August 2022, 246 patients scheduled to undergo carotid or femoral endarterectomy at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Klinikum (Munich, Germany), have been enrolled (median age, 73 years; 32%

Photovoice Methods Pilot Study of Cognitive Impairment in Multiple Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment (CI) affects upwards of 70% of people with multiple sclerosis (MS) and influences daily living and quality of life. Standard assessments capture performance but provide limited insight into how cognitive changes are experienced. Photovoice may help surface these internal and less visible dimensions, yet its feasibility for CI-focused MS research is not well established. OBJECTIVES: To assess the feasibility and methodological utility of photovoice for examining CI as a lived experience in MS and to identify insights that can guide future qualitative study desi

Development and pilot testing of a prostate cancer polygenic risk report.

BACKGROUND: Polygenic risk scores (PRS) are increasingly being incorporated into clinical care, yet optimal strategies for communicating PRS results to patients and clinicians remain undefined. Effective report design is critical to ensure comprehension and appropriate use, particularly for complex conditions such as prostate cancer where screening decisions are nuanced. We developed and pilot tested patient-facing materials to communicate integrated polygenic and monogenic risk for prostate cancer in the context of a randomized clinical trial. METHODS: We designed a summary report and accomp

Applicability of Artificial Intelligence Analysis in Oral Cytopathology: A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Oral cancer, especially oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), is a global health challenge due to factors such as late detection and high mortality rates. Early detection is essential through monitoring by healthcare professionals. Cytopathology is a cellular analysis model for evaluating cellular damage preceding the clinical appearance of OSCC, but it requires training and has diagnostic limitations, due to its subjective aspect. Artificial intelligence (AI) shows potential to enhance the interpretation of cytological images, reducing working time and subjectivity. OBJECTIVE: T
