A 45-year-old previously healthy man presented with minimally itchy spiny papular lesions of 3 years' duration and discharging nodular cysti … d oral mucosa were normal. Considering the atypical cutaneous findings, the clinical possibility of pityriasis rubra pilaris (human immunodeficiency virus [HIV]-associated type 6 PRP) was considered. Hematoxylin and eosin stain of skin biopsy specimens taken from the spiny papular and plaque lesions revealed marked hyperkeratosis with alternating orthokerato …

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare idiopathic erythematosquamous disorder. Griffiths proposed five clinical and prognostic forms: (1) classic adult, (2) atypical adult, (3) classic juvenile, (4) circumscribed juvenile and (5) atypical juvenile. A 2 1/2 year old boy presented with type 3 PRP; as is typical, the skin eruption was preceded by an infectious disorder. Although type 3 PRP normally shows spontaneous resolution after several months to years, our young patient had a severe and protracted course, only responding to systemic retinoids.

BACKGROUND: The study stemmed from an incidental observation of improvement in 2 patients with pityriasis rosea while receiving erythromycin.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of erythromycin in patients with pityriasis rosea.
METHODS: A double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study was performed in an outpatient setting in a major hospital. Ninety patients over a period of 2 years were alternatively assigned to treatment group or placebo group. Patients in the treatment group received erythromycin in divided doses for 14 days. The response was categorized as…

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Juvenile pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare disease that may alter the nail aspect. Image analysis after nail shadowing was used to quantify trachyonychia associated with juvenile PRR Methods: The mean roughness (Ra) and the mean depth of roughness (Rz) of fingernails were measured three times at 3-month intervals in nine children suffering from PRR The same measures were taken in 25 age-matched normal individuals.
RESULTS: Both profilometric parameters had higher values in the PRP group than in healthy subjects. The abnormal Ra and Rz values in patients showed variatio…

We have compared the clinical and histopathological features of 6 patients with lymphomatoid papulosis (LP) and 14 patients with pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA). There were some differences between the clinical features in the two diseases, including the size and appearance of skin lesions and the duration of the course of disease. Ki-1 Ag positive, large, atypical, lymphoid cells were always seen in lymphomatoid papulosis; none of lymphoid cells of pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta demonstrated this antigen. We conclude that lymphomatoid papulosis and PLEVA, …

Lymphomatoid papulosis (LyP) and pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA) are benign self-healing cutaneous eruptions that may be clinically and histologically similar. However LyP has a 5% to 20% risk of associated lymphoid malignancy, whereas PLEVA does not. To determine whether the immunophenotype of lymphoid cells is useful in the distinction of these two disorders, the pattern of expression of lymphoid cell lineage and activation antigens in nine cases of LyP and seven cases of PLEVA were compared. In all cases of LyP most larger cells expressed the activation antigen Ki-1 (C…

2 patients with long-standing and wide-spread pityriasis lichenoides chronica were treated with orally administered 8-methyoxypsoralen and UVA irradiation (PUVA therapy). After 15--21 PUVA treatments the patients were completely cleared. 3 and 4 weeks after the initial PUVA treatment, phase recurrences occurred in both patients. In 1 patient the lesions appeared clinically and histologically as pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta.

Small size, less numerous and sometimes clustered melanosomes, were seen within the melanocytes. The others organites alos showed abnormalities: smaller mitochondria, abundant cytofilaments. Sometimes total degeneration of the melanocyte was seen. These alterations are variable, depending upon the evolutive stage of pityriasis versicolor: either hypopigmented undergoing treatment or not, or hyperpigmented. Reactions of several cellular types of the dermoepidermal unit could be observed: more numerous Langerhans cells located near the base of the epidermis, abundant nerve fibers in the superfic…

INTRODUCTION: PRP is a rare entity of unknown etiopathogenesis. Lack of management guidelines makes it a challenge for clinicians.
OBJECTIVE: To add our experience to increase evidence about PRP.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective, descriptive and multicentric study of 65 patients with PRP, being the largest European case series of patients with PRP.
RESULTS: PRP was more frequent in male patients with an average age of 51 years, but erythrodermic forms presented in older patients (average age 61 years). Six (75%) paediatric patients and ten (60%) non-erythrodermic adults controlled thei
