BACKGROUND: Malaria is causing more than half of a million deaths and 214 million clinical cases annually. Despite tremendous efforts for the control of malaria, the global morbidity and mortality have not been significantly changed in the last 50 years. Artemisinin, extracted from the medicinal plant Artemisia sp. is an effective anti-malarial drug. In 2015, elucidation of the effectiveness of artemisinin as a potent anti-malarial drug was acknowledged with a Nobel prize. Owing to the tight market and low yield of artemisinin, an economical way to increase its production is to increase its co

BACKGROUND: Carotenoids are essential plant pigments with key roles in stress tolerance and human nutrition. β-carotene is a major provitamin A carotenoid, and understanding the genetic basis of its natural variation in Capsicum annuum is important for nutritional improvement. However, carotenoid accumulation is a complex quantitative trait influenced by multiple metabolic and regulatory pathways.
METHODS: An extreme-phenotype genome-wide association study (XP-GWAS) was conducted using pooled genomic DNA from 92 C. annuum accessions representing contrasting extremes of β-carotene content. Fru

BACKGROUND: Rice farming faces a significant challenge from the brown planthopper (BPH), a destructive pest that threatens crop yields. Developing BPH-resistant rice varieties is critical for ensuring food security. The pyramiding of BPH resistance genes, BPH14 and BPH15, has proven effective in providing protection in elite rice strains. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a pivotal role in plant defense by fine-tuning resistance responses through the modulation of genes involved in various signaling pathways and metabolic processes. B1415, the pyramiding line containing BPH14 and BPH15, exhibits stronge

UNLABELLED: Yellow mosaic disease (YMD), caused by the mungbean yellow mosaic India virus (MYMIV), represents a significant threat to soybean production in Southeast Asia, particularly in India. This study assessed 230 soybean breeding lines from the All India Coordinated Research Programme (AICRP) for YMD resistance through multi-year field trials conducted at IARI, New Delhi, a hotspot location conducive to natural epiphytotic conditions for YMD. Disease impact was evaluated using the coefficient of infection (CI), which combines both percent disease incidence and severity grades, as well as

Salinity significantly reduces rice yield, particularly when stress occurs during the reproductive stage. This study aimed to evaluate the physiological and yield responses of rice genotypes subjected to salinity stress during this critical growth phase. The experiment followed a 4 × 10 factorial arrangements in a randomized complete block design (RCBD), comprising ten rice genotypes and four salinity levels (control, 6, 12, and 16 dS/m). Data were collected for electrolyte leakage, relative water content (RWC), proline content, SPAD chlorophyll meter reading (SCMR), total phenolic content, gr

Although CRISPR/Cas-based genome editing has been widely used for plant genetic engineering, its application in the genetic improvement of trees has been limited, partly because of challenges in Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. As an important model for poplar genomics and biotechnology research, eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides) clone WV94 can be transformed by A. tumefaciens, but several challenges remain unresolved, including the relatively low transformation efficiency and the relatively high rate of false positives from antibiotic-based selection of transgenic events. Moreover,

In Europe, bromadiolone, an anticoagulant rodenticide authorized for plant protection, may be applied intensively in fields to control rodents. The high level of poisoning of wildlife that follows such treatments over large areas has been frequently reported. In France, bromadiolone has been used to control water voles (Arvicola terrestris) since the 1980s. Both regulation and practices of rodent control have evolved during the last 15 years to restrict the quantity of poisoned bait used by farmers. This has led to a drastic reduction of the number of cases of poisoned wildlife reported by the

Dioscorea alata L., the most widely cultivated yam species, exhibits dioecy (XY system) and a strong male-biased sex ratio. These two major constraints limit parental combinations and hinder breeding progress. To get insight into the sex chromosome structure and evolution in D. alata, we present a haplotype-resolved, near-complete genome assembly of the male cultivar "Kabusa," spanning 958 Mb across 40 chromosomes. DalaChr6A is identified as the Y chromosome which exhibits early signs of heteromorphism, including a slight reduction in size (∼400 Kb difference) and a potential centromere shift

Spermidine (Spd) is a pivotal polyamine involved in plant growth and stress tolerance, but its genetic regulation in soybeans (Glycine max) remains unclear. In this study, we quantified seed Spd content in 208 soybean accessions across two years by RP-HPLC and performed GWAS. Spd showed continuous variation and a high broad-sense heritability (H2 = 0.99). GWAS identified a major repeated locus on chromosome 18, and integrated haplotype and functional analyses prioritized GmSHMT, GmMYB91, and GmCAT9. Favorable haplotypes of these genes were associated with higher Spd content. Promoter analysis

Timely flowering and maturity are crucial for plant reproduction and environmental adaptation. Light-dark cycle-associated regulatory networks integrate photoperiodic cues with intrinsic developmental programs and play pivotal roles in flowering, maturity and environmental adaptation. Soybean is a short-day crop with strong photoperiod responsiveness; however, the molecular mechanisms by which these networks mediate soybean adaptation to diverse environments remain largely elusive. Here, we combine genome-wide association analysis with deep learning-based assessment of soybean maturity variati

High temperature has a significant impact on plant reproductive development, driving the formation of 2n gametes by interfering with the meiosis and cytokinesis of sporocytes. This study used Camellia meiocarpa as the material, integrating cytological and molecular biology approaches to reveal the cytological effects and regulatory mechanisms of high temperature on sporocyte development. The results showed that meiosis in microsporocyte and megasporocyte of C. meiocarpa exhibits pronounced spatiotemporal heterogeneity. High temperature markedly disrupted sporocyte development and induced abnor

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are key regulators of plant growth, development, and immunity. However, their role in kiwifruit and other perennial fruit trees remains poorly characterized. Here, we demonstrate that Ac-miR156a functions as a negative regulator of kiwifruit resistance to Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa). In the resistant cultivar "Jinkui," Ac-miR156a expression was significantly suppressed upon Psa infection, whereas it was markedly induced in the susceptible cultivar "Hongyang." Overexpression of miR156a increased kiwifruit susceptibility to Psa, while silencing miR156a via short-

Soybean [Glycine max (Linn.) Merr] is a globally important source of plant-based protein and edible oil, widely cultivated in India as a major oilseed crop. However, conventional breeding approaches for soybean are laborious, constrained by the genomic complexity of soybean, and face persistent challenges in genetic transformation. Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/Cas-based genome editing has emerged as a precise and efficient tool for rapid trait improvement in soybean. While many existing reviews of soybean have been published, this literature review address

INTRODUCTION: Soil salinization constrains plant growth, and enhancing salt tolerance is of great significance.
METHODS: Here, Ginkgo biloba seedlings were treated with control (CK), salt stress (S), or salt stress + melatonin (S+M). Integrating physiology, transcriptomics, and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), we explored how melatonin enhances salt tolerance.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Salt stress reduced chlorophyll content, suggesting potential impairment of photosynthetic capacity, appeared to increase membrane lipid peroxidation, and led to substantial proline accumula

Reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) is one of the most widely used techniques for gene expression analysis in molecular biology. However, the accuracy of relative gene expression quantification largely depends on the stability of the reference genes used for normalization. Sambucus nigra L. (elderberry) is a valuable medicinal and edible plant rich in anthocyanins and other bioactive compounds. Despite its increasing research and application value, no reference genes have been validated for this species. In this study, we applied RT-qPCR alongside four algorithms (GeNorm, NormFind

Soil salinization severely restricts the growth, yield, and industrial development of apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.). WRKY transcription factors play crucial roles in plant responses to abiotic stresses. However, the genome-wide characteristics of the WRKY family in apricot and their functional mechanisms in salt tolerance remain unclear. In this study, we identified 58 PaWRKY genes in apricot and characterized their phylogeny, chromosomal distribution, and gene structure. Based on transcriptomic and phylogenetic analyses, PaWRKY57 (homologous to AtWRKY33) was selected as a key salt-responsive

Endo-β-1,4-mannanases (MANs) are glycoside hydrolase family 5 (GH5) enzymes that degrade cell wall mannan polysaccharides and participate in plant growth and stress adaptation. This gene family has not been systematically characterized in common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Here, we identified 24 TaMAN genes (TaMAN1-TaMAN24) genome-wide and analyzed their phylogeny, gene structures, chromosomal distribution, synteny, and promoter cis-acting elements. Expression profiles under biotic and abiotic stresses were investigated using public databases, salt-stress RNA-seq, and RT-qPCR. TaMAN proteins

Panax ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Mey.) produces pharmacologically valuable ginsenosides. WD40-repeat (WDR) proteins act as versatile regulators of plant specialized metabolism, yet their biological roles under methyl jasmonate (MeJA) elicitation remain largely uncharacterized in ginseng. In this study, we identified 29 PgWDR family members at the whole-genome level, and systematically analyzed their phylogeny, gene structure, cis-acting promoter elements, as well as organ- and development-dependent expression patterns. Six candidate genes potentially associated with ginsenoside biosynthesis w

Anthers are essential in plant reproduction and are also crucial in agriculture, because hybrid seed production typically relies on the manipulation of male fertility. Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) is the fifth most produced grain crop in the world. However, relatively little is known about the genetic mechanisms that regulate anther development and male fertility in sorghum. Here, we report the morphological characterization of anther development in wild-type sorghum BTx623 and the Sorghum bicolor tapetal degeneration retardation (Sbtdr) mutant, as well as identification of the causal g
