Broiler performance, body weight variance, feed and water intake, and carcass quality at different stocking densities.

The effects of four stocking and water nipple densities on broiler performance and carcass traits were measured in two trials. The stocking densities of 23.8, 17.9, 14.3, and 11.9 birds/m2 corresponded to 260, 195, 156, and 130 birds per pen, respectively. The water nipple densities were 5, 10, 15, and 20 birds per water nipple. Birds in Trial 1 were processed at Day 39 and those in Trial 2 were processed at Day 42. Water and feed were provided ad libitum and light was provided 23 h/ d. Water nipple density had no effect on broiler performance or carcass quality. Birds grown at 23.8 birds/m2 h

[Abundance and infection of Biomphalaria glabrata with Schistosoma glabrata in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil].

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the spatial distribution, abundance and natural schistosomiasis infection levels in the snail Biomphalaria glabrata, the intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni in an area of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. METHODS: In the Pamparrão area, Sumidouro county, RJ, Brazil, snail captures were carried out every other month from June 1991 to November 1995. There were 23 collecting sites along the Pamparrão stream and its three tributaries (A, B and C). Captured snails were examined in the laboratory for infection. Data analyses were performed using Spearman coefficie

[Entomologic study of loaiasis transmission in the Lekie area (Cameroon)].

A number of cases of Loa encephalopathy have been recorded after ivermectin treatment in the Lekie Division, an area of degraded forest located in central Cameroon. An entomological study was carried out in a village of this region between May 1999 and April 2000 to determine whether the high microfilarial loads of Loa found in the population, which can exceed 10,000 microfilariae per ml of blood, were related to high densities of vector populations. The Chrysops collected at 10 catching stations, using hand nets, by persons standing by a wood fire, were dissected to evaluate their level of in

A scenario for polio eradication.

Polio eradication has entered the phase operating in the Asian sub-continent and in sub-Saharan Africa, where polio is still endemic in 30 countries. These countries are apparently most resistant to the eradication effort. The WHO polio panel held in May, in Geneva, discussed a scenario to stop transmission by 2002 and thereafter three years for certification. This paper discusses the scenario based on experience with smallpox eradication from the viewpoint of impact of population density on immunisation. The programme in the Indian sub-continent, which has the world's highest population densi…

Vector densities that potentiate dengue outbreaks in a Brazilian city.

To identify the critical vector density that potentiates dengue outbreaks in an endemic site and to identify obstacles to anti-dengue activities, we correlated a series of dengue outbreaks in a Brazilian city with the intensity of its anti-vector source-reduction activities. The proportion of houses infested by vector mosquitoes correlated inversely with intensity of anti-mosquito interventions, and the vector population developed independently of rainfall. Local periods of drought promoted vector abundance in two ways: residents stored water in which vector mosquitoes could breed, and cholera

Parasites of domestic and wild animals in South Africa. XXXV. Ixodid ticks and bot fly larvae in the Bontebok National Park.

Ixodid ticks were collected during February of each year from 1983-1992 from bontebok and grey rhebok in the Bontebok National Park, Western Cape Province. When available other mammals as well as ground-nesting birds and leopard tortoises were examined. Eleven tick species were recovered. Rhipicephalus nitens followed by Rhipicephalus glabroscutatum and an Ixodes sp. (near I. pilosus) were the most abundant, while Amblyomma marmoreum infested the widest host range. The larvae of three bot files were also collected. Gedoelstia sp. and Strobiloestrus sp. larvae were recovered from bontebok and g

Temporal and spatial distribution of anopheline mosquitos in an Ethiopian village: implications for malaria control strategies.

The spatial and temporal distribution of Anopheles gambiae mosquitos in houses in the village of Sille in Ethiopia was monitored in 1990-91. Monthly mosquito densities in over 300 houses were obtained, and the data for each month were plotted on maps, which indicated clustering of mosquitos within the village. Spatial analysis using "kriging" techniques demonstrated clustering towards the edges of the village, the pattern of which changed with time. For example, the low density of mosquitos in one area in September increased as the nearby irrigation canals dried up during the following months.

Population size, parity structure, and wing length of Coquillettidia perturbans in an Ohio focus of eastern equine encephalitis.

Adult female density, parity status, and wing length were determined weekly for a population of Coquillettidia perturbans in an area enzootic for eastern equine encephalitis virus in central Ohio. Samples were collected in CO2-baited CDC miniature light traps from the first week in June through the 2nd week of September 1992. Population density indicated a single emergence peak during the 2nd week in July. However, parity rates showed 2 peaks, occurring in the first week of August (70.9% parous) and the 2nd week of September (55.3% parous), which suggested that there was a relatively small 2nd…

Reinfestation analysis to estimate ectoparasite population size, emergence, and mortality.

The key components of ectoparasite vectorial capacity are poorly known, and no estimates of absolute population size for nest ectoparasites nor average longevity under natural conditions are available. A simple method to estimate these and other population parameters is suggested here, using body infestation data obtained by a specific host sampling design and the reproductive status of female ectoparasites. In contrast to mark-release-recapture techniques, this method requires minimal effort. Data on fleas, Synosternus cleopatrae (Rothschild), infesting gerbils, Gerbilus anderosoni allenbyi T

[The current status of foci of tick-borne relapsing fever in the western Pamirs].

For the first time in the last 20-50 years foci of tick-borne relapsing fever have been surveyed in the western Pamirs. Settlements in the Piandzha valley were shown to be (as in the 1930s and 1960s) affected by Ornithodoros papillipes Bir., the carrier of the infection. Though the number of ticks is still rather high, it is nowadays considerably reduced. The findings suggest a tendency towards a decrease in the infestation of the carrier population with the agent of the disease. The traditional type of construction (especially widespread in far-off regions), when houses are built in such a wa

Trypanosomiasis: a public health priority in Cameroon.

From a historical standpoint and the present distribution of the disease, human trypanosomiasis, in spite of its comparatively low incidence, still remains a public health priority in Cameroon, requiring both national and international support for control measures. The geographical position of the country within the Glossina belt, certain cultural practices, agro-industrial activities, and an improving transport system are current factors favouring the spread of the disease. Similarly the changing pattern of the disease, ignorance and the lack of valid diagnostic and safe chemotherapeutic tool

A simple method for assessment of association between synanthropic flies and trachoma.

In some areas of endemic trachoma, muscoid flies may play a significant role in transmission of this serious eye infection. A simple and practical method of quantifying the relative household density of synanthropic flies has been developed for use in epidemiological field surveys. The method uses two boards moistened with a 10% sucrose solution. The fly scores showed good reproducibility at the same sampling site during the day and on different days. The only flies identified were Musca sorbens, showing their local density and a significant association of this fly with the presence of inflamm

Bioecologic aspects of Phlebotomine sandflies in relation to human and canine visceral leishmaniasis in northern Tunisia.

In northern Tunisia 29 sandfly collecting places were studied for two years, in five human leishmaniasis foci, seven canine foci and in the nature. Nine species were found among the 4942 specimens collected. P. perniciosus, the well known vector of visceral leishmaniasis and the herpetophile S. minuta parroti were commonest. The sandfly season extended from april to october. P. perniciosus showed a numerical curve with one peak. It occupied various types of shelters in nature and human settlements, but prefer shady and humid shelters. In settlements it is frequently found around dwellings and

Preliminary epidemiological survey of schistosomiasis in central and southern Liberia.

Some basic epidemiological data on schistosomiasis in central and southern Liberia were collected. A study of snail density fluctuations was carried out in waterbodies bordering the road between Harbel and Gbarnga. Samples from schoolchildren living in ten selected villages were examined for Schistosoma spp. and other helminths. In the coastal region no snail hosts were found, the prevalence rates in schoolchildren were low and the infections were apparently imported. Inland, the intermediate host of Schistosoma haematobium Bulinus globosus was common and the prevalence of urinary schistosomia

Searching for the forest ghosts: group counts and polyspecific associations of the endangered Rungwecebus kipunji in the Udzungwa Mountains, Tanzania.

The IUCN-Endangered kipunji (Rungwecebus kipunji) is one of Africa's rarest primates, restricted to two isolated populations in Tanzania. The Udzungwa population is enigmatic, confined to a small area within a large, old-growth forest and consists of fewer than 100 individuals. Apart from baseline data from 2006, ecological knowledge remains scant. We present new data from three standardized sweep censuses conducted between 2013 and 2024 in Ndundulu forest along 42-45 linear transects of 2 km in length. Per census, only 4 to 6 kipunji groups were recorded, within a range of 10.42 km2 which inc

Lemur Distribution in Relation to Treefall Canopy Gaps in Masoala National Park, Northeast Madagascar.

Madagascar is a biodiversity hotspot facing increasing anthropogenic pressures, with 95% of lemur species threatened with extinction. In addition to habitat loss and hunting, cyclones create treefall gaps with unknown effects on arboreal species. We examined the effect of Cyclone Eliakim, which struck Masoala National Park in March 2018 with sustained wind speeds reaching 151 km/h. We assessed whether lemur densities and their microhabitat niches changed in relation to the cyclone, and whether their distributions were related to treefall gaps. We conducted 110.42 km of transect walks for diurn

Multiple environmental conditions precede Ebola spillovers in Central Africa.

Many emerging viruses of public health concern originate in animals and have the potential to transmit to humans or cause spillover. Orthoebolavirus zairense (EBOV) is one example, circulating in wildlife in Central and West Africa, with high mortality in humans and animals. Previous studies have linked Ebola outbreaks to transitions in rainfall seasonality, proximity to deforestation and areas with high human population density. However, a universal driver or mechanism has not been described and spillovers remain unpredictable. To assess potential environmental determinants of EBOV spillovers…

Sibling species composition and feeding pattern of malaria vectors in indoor-sprayed and non-sprayed districts of Lira and Kole, northern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Vector control interventions using long-lasting insecticidal nets and indoor residual spraying are common tools deployed for the control of malaria in Uganda. To evaluate the effectiveness of these control tools and understand the prevailing malaria vectors, a study was conducted to determine the species composition, indoor resting population density and biting pattern of malaria vectors in indoor residual spraying (IRS) and non-indoor residual spraying (non-IRS) districts of Lira and Kole, Northern Uganda. METHODS: Both indoor and outdoor adult malaria vectors were sampled using …
