Prescription opioid (PO)-dependent treatment presentations are becoming increasingly common; however, most research on the treatment of opioid-dependent populations has been conducted in heroin users. OBJECTIVE: We examined the prevalence and correlates of prescription drug misuse (PDM) in a population-based sample of adults from Alberta.
METHODS: Data were collected from 3511 adults in Alberta aged 18 years and older in 2002 using a computer-aided telephone survey; the survey response rate was 57.4%.

A review of prescribing practice for continence related products revealed shortcomings in the service that patients were receiving. This led to it being radically redesigned, with the continence service being responsible for prescriptions. The new service model also includes telephone triage before prescriptions are issued. Patient feedback on the new model has been extremely positive. This project won the 2009 Nursing Times continence award.

This preliminary study examines the correlates of prescription drug abuse in a sample of adolescents in an urban juvenile detention center in Ohio. The study measures risk in 359 incarcerated females (20.1%) and 1,425 males (79.9%) by asking questions related to problems with alcohol, drug use, treatment history, mental and physical health problems, sexual behavior, anger management, physical violence, and family support. Non-medical use of prescription medications is on the rise across the U.S., particularly in rural areas. In this study of 233 prisoners and probationers in southwestern Virginia, we add to an emerging profile of individuals abusing prescription medications. In this retrospective review of 2000-2004 augmented Addiction Severity Index data, those abusing prescription medications reported increased illicit drug and alcohol abuse, poly-drug abuse, psychiatric problems, and arrests for property crimes. Direct interview were conducted with 150 patients in ten pharmacies in the city of Saint-Louis, Senegal from January to June 2002.
