Can available interventions end preventable deaths in mothers, newborn babies, and stillbirths, and at what cost?

Progress in newborn survival has been slow, and even more so for reductions in stillbirths. To meet Every Newborn targets of ten or fewer neonatal deaths and ten or fewer stillbirths per 1000 births in every country by 2035 will necessitate accelerated scale-up of the most effective care targeting major causes of newborn deaths. We have systematically reviewed interventions across the continuum of care and various delivery platforms, and then modelled the effect and cost of scale-up in the 75 high-burden Countdown countries. Closure of the quality gap through the provision of effective care fo

Trachoma and antibiotic use: the 'A' in SAFE.

Trachoma, a chronic conjunctivitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, is the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide. In recognition of this public health problem, the World Health Assembly has targeted the year 2020 to eliminate blinding trachoma, and a multifaceted strategy (SAFE) is recommended, including antibiotics for treatment of infection. Trachoma is a disease of entire communities, and the pool of infection resides largely in preschool age children. Thus, for endemic communities, mass treatment with antibiotics annually for at least 3-5 years is carried out. The antibiotics use

Controlled evaluation of injury in an international Safe Community: Kashmar, Iran.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the degree to which the Safe Community (SC) model is effective in reducing injuries. Although positive results have been reported for some communities in developed countries, there is no consistent relationship between being an international designated SC and subsequent changes in observed rate of injury, and no controlled studies have examined the effectiveness of the SC model in developing countries. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the injuries in the SC programme of Kashmar (population 149,358) with injuries in counties in Iran that have not applie

Can visceral leishmaniasis be eliminated from Asia?

Data on the burden of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Indian sub-continent are vital for elimination programme planners for estimating resource requirements, effective implementation and monitoring of elimination programme. In Indian sub-continent, about 200 million population is at risk of VL. Nearly 25,000-40,000 cases and 200-300 deaths are reported every year, but these are grossly underestimates. Recent well-designed multicentric studies identified VL burden of 21 cases/10,000 among sampled population in Indian sub-continent (Bangladesh, India and Nepal). This estimates 4,20,000 cases per

Prevention of viral hepatitis (B and C) reassessed.

As hepatitis B and C share modes of transmission, their combined occurrence is not uncommon, particularly in areas where both viruses are endemic and in individuals at high-risk of parenteral infection. Both viral hepatitis infections form an important global public health problem, responsible for over half a billion chronic infections worldwide. Their distinctive characteristics impact upon their epidemiology, transmission, and the success of the different prevention strategies. Since several decades a safe and effective vaccine has been available to prevent hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.

Prevention of lead poisoning in construction workers: a new public health approach.

BACKGROUND: In 1990, Yale University, the Connecticut Departments of Health Services and of Transportation, the Connecticut Construction Industries Association, and the state's construction trade unions created the Connecticut Road Industry Surveillance Project (CRISP). METHODS: Data from 90 bridge projects from 1991 to 1995 and approximately 2,000 workers were evaluated. The distribution of peak lead concentrations in the blood for CRISP workers classified into five groups were compared to that from workers outside of Connecticut. RESULTS: This demonstration project was instrumental in lowe

Smoking intervention in the workplace: review and recommendations.

Growing interest has been expressed by the business community concerning intervention against smoking in the workplace. As most adult smokers are unlikely to have access to smokers' clinics or other treatment facilities outside the workplace, the workplace itself could be an ideal location for the provision of treatment programs. If the interest of the business community can be translated into action, large populations of smokers would become accessible to workplace treatment programs. Despite this possibility, the potential of the workplace for smoking intervention remains largely unexplored.

Measuring the performance of urban healthcare services: results of an international experience.

The objective of this paper is to apply a framework for country-level performance assessment to the cities of Montreal, Canada, and Barcelona, Spain, and to use this framework to explore and understand the differences in their health systems. The UK National Health Service Performance Assessment Framework was chosen. Its indicators went through a process of selection, adaptation and prioritisation. Most of them were calculated for the period 2001-3, with data obtained from epidemiological, activity and economic registries. Montreal has a higher number of old people living alone and with limita

"Health Is on the Back Burner:" Multilevel Barriers and Facilitators to Primary Care Among People Who Inject Drugs.

BACKGROUND: The estimated 2.2 million people who inject drugs (PWID) in the USA experience significant gaps in preventive healthcare and a high burden of infectious, psychiatric, and other chronic diseases. Many PWID rely on emergency medical services, which are costly and not designed to deliver preventive services, manage chronic conditions, or address social needs. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to explore barriers and facilitators to primary care utilization from the perspectives of PWID in New England, a region highly affected by the overdose crisis. Differences in health self-management behaviors among residents with illnesses across remote islands with different degrees of isolation from the mainland.

Objective: Owing to geographic isolation, limited healthcare services, and aging populations, residents with illnesses living on highly isolated islands may engage more actively in health self-management. However, this assumption has not been empirically examined. The aim of this study was to compare health self-management behaviors among residents with illnesses according to the degree of island isolation. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted in clinics on four remote islands administered by Goto City, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, between July and August 2025. Participan

When health facilities close, outbreaks follow: the public health consequences of aid cuts in Somalia.

Somalia's fragile health system is increasingly threatened by reductions in humanitarian financing, with potentially serious consequences for outbreak prevention and public-health preparedness. Recent funding cuts have already resulted in the closure of health and nutrition facilities and substantial reductions in service coverage, with further closures projected under severe funding scenarios. These disruptions extend beyond reduced access to curative care; they may interrupt routine immunization, nutrition screening and treatment, disease surveillance, referral pathways, and early outbreak d
