Gravitational acceleration as a cue for absolute size and distance?

When an object's motion is influenced by gravity, as in the rise and fall of a thrown ball, the vertical component of acceleration is roughly constant at 9.8 m/sec2. In principle, an observer could use this information to estimate the absolute size and distance of the object (Saxberg, 1987a; Watson, Banks, von Hofsten, & Royden, 1992). In five experiments, we examined people's ability to utilize the size and distance information provided by gravitational acceleration. Observers viewed computer simulations of an object rising and falling on a trajectory aligned with the gravitational vector. Th

Recovery of depth perception in adults with abnormal binocular vision.

Our goal in this study was to determine the efficacy, time course and mechanisms underlying the improvement of stereo vision using 3D virtual reality (VR) games to improve depth perception in adults with a history of abnormal early visual experience due to strabismus, anisometropia and/or amblyopia. Participants engaged in 30 home-based training sessions, supplemented by 5 in-lab assessments to monitor progress. The training protocol utilized a diverse set of VR games targeting stereoacuity, anti-suppression, and binocular alignment. The stereo training games employed various depth cues to fac

Sensitivity at the Edges of the Finger Enables Mixed Reality Force Feedback.

We introduce a new paradigm for rendering high-force sensations by stimulating the edges of the fingerpad rather than the central contact surface. This non-blocking approach preserves natural finger use, enabling simultaneous physical and virtual interactions. To investigate its feasibility, we proposed a mechanotransduction mechanism and conducted biomechanical and psychophysical studies. Our results show that the fingerpad edges are nearly as sensitive as the center under low forces, become roughly 117% more sensitive under moderate forces, and maintain sensitivity at higher forces. The edge

Retinal Cx36 gap junctions in the inner and outer plexiform layers differentially control visual thresholds.

Gap junctions are important components of signal communication in sensory systems. In the retina, connexin 36 (Cx36) gap junctions integrate visual signals over space and time. However, we do not understand how Cx36 gap junctions in the inner- and outer-retina govern visual thresholds under dim light conditions. Here we address this question using transgenic mouse models, an operant behavioral assay, and psychophysical modeling. Visual thresholds with Ganzfeld illumination decreased with flash durations <0.5 s, plateauing at ∼2 × 10-4 ph/μm2/s with longer flashes. Removal of Cx36 in the outer

Blue Cone Monochromatism.

Blue cone monochromatism (BCM) is a rare X-linked recessive disease characterized by an absent function of L and M cones and a normal function of S cones and rods. The estimated prevalence is 1 in 100,000 individuals, and males are predominantly affected. The patients usually present at birth or in early infancy. The clinical features include impaired color vision (patients only see colors in the blue range of light) and poor visual acuity (between 20/80 and 20/200), photophobia, pendular nystagmus (which may improve over time), and myopia. The condition is typically stationary, but progressiv

Death by thoracic asphyxia vs excited delirium syndrome: a controversial medico-legal issue.

Death by suffocation due to prolonged thoracic compression represents a significant forensic issue with critical implications for the management of physical restraint interventions. However, it remains challenging for forensic pathologists to ascertain the exact cause of death when the individual is a habitual substance abuser and in an altered psychophysical state (Excited Delirium Syndrome, EDS). This case report describes the death of a male individual following an episode of psychomotor agitation and physical restraint by multiple individuals. The autopsy revealed findings consistent with

Simulations of low-frequency vibration pattern at the inner ear for activation of the vestibular system.

Vestibular stimulation is a promising method for mitigating motion sickness and assessing vestibular function. However, conventional methods such as galvanic, caloric, or bone conduction (BC) stimulation lack the spatial selectivity needed to replicate the precise inputs of natural head movements. In this study, a novel approach is proposed using multiple BC transducers with coordinated magnitude and phase to generate targeted vestibular motions. A validated finite element model of the human head was employed to simulate vestibular responses to stimuli from four transducer locations. A genetic

Investigating Osseoperception in Distal Regions of the Upper Limb for Augmented Sensory Feedback.

The somatosensory function is crucial for motor control, but is often deemed secondary in the design of assistive technologies for individuals with neuromotor impairments. This study investigates osseoperception-auditory and vibrotactile sensations evoked through bone stimulation-at the wrist pisiform bone (PB) and metacarpal head (MCH) of the index finger in 12 participants. Vibratory stimuli (100-6000 Hz) were applied during four psychophysical experiments: sensation discrimination, perception thresholds, sensory mapping, and loudness evaluation. Tactile sensations occurred below 940 Hz at t

Serum biomarkers in patients with hand-arm vibration injury and in controls.

Hand-arm vibration injury is a well-known occupational disorder that affects many workers globally. The diagnosis is based mainly on quantitative psychophysical tests and medical history. Typical manifestations of hand-arm vibration injury entail episodes of finger blanching, Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) and sensorineural symptoms from affected nerve fibres and mechanoreceptors in the skin. Differences in serum levels of 17 different biomarkers between 92 patients with hand-arm vibration injury and 51 controls were analysed. Patients with hand-arm vibration injury entailing RP and sensorineural m

African Gene Flow Reduces Beta-Ionone Anosmia/Hyposmia Prevalence in Admixed Malagasy Populations.

While recent advances in genetics make it possible to follow the genetic exchanges between populations and their phenotypic consequences, the impact of the genetic exchanges on the sensory perception of populations has yet to be explored. From this perspective, the present study investigated the consequences of African gene flow on odor perception in a Malagasy population with a predominantly East Asian genetic background. To this end, we combined psychophysical tests with genotype data of 235 individuals who were asked to smell the odorant molecule beta-ionone (βI). Results showed that in thi

Long COVID: long-term effects?

The term Long COVID (or Post COVID) describes a condition characterized by persistence of symptoms for at least 12 weeks after the onset of COVID-19. It may last several months but the duration is still matter of observation. The symptoms and the clinical manifestations are clinically heterogeneous and suggesting involvement of multi-organs/systems, including the cardiovascular system. The general recurrent symptoms include fatigue, breathlessness, myalgia, headache, loss of memory, and impaired concentration. Patients report loss of their previous psychophysical performance. Cardiovascular in

Parallel cortical-brainstem pathways to attentional analgesia.

Pain demands attention, yet pain can be reduced by focusing attention elsewhere. The neural processes involved in this robust psychophysical phenomenon, attentional analgesia, are still being defined. Our previous fMRI study linked activity in the brainstem triad of locus coeruleus (LC), rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM) and periaqueductal grey (PAG) with attentional analgesia. Here we identify and model the functional interactions between these regions and the cortex in healthy human subjects (n = 57), who received painful thermal stimuli whilst simultaneously performing a visual attention t

Damping Perception During Active Ankle and Knee Movement.

The mechanical impedance of the leg governs many important aspects of locomotion, including energy storage, transfer, and dissipation between joints. These mechanical properties, including stiffness and damping, have been recently quantified at the ankle joint during walking. However, little is known about the human ability to sense changes in impedance. Here, we investigate the ability to detect small changes in damping coefficients when interacting with a mechanical system coupled to the ankle or knee joint. Using a psychophysical experiment (adaptive, weighted staircase method) and an admit

Deciphering the Contributions of CRH Receptors in the Brain and Pituitary to Stress-Induced Inhibition of the Reproductive Axis.

Based on pharmacological studies, corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and its receptors play a leading role in the inhibition of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis during acute stress. To further study the effects of CRH receptor signaling on the HPG axis, we generated and/or employed male mice lacking CRH receptor type 1 (CRHR1) or type 2 (CRHR2) in gonadotropin-releasing hormone neurons, GABAergic neurons, or in all central neurons and glia. The deletion of CRHRs revealed a preserved decrease of plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) in response to either psychophysical or immunologica

Optimizing text for an individual's visual system: The contribution of visual crowding to reading difficulties.

Reading is a complex process that involves low-level visual processing, phonological processing, and higher-level semantic processing. Given that skilled reading requires integrating information among these different systems, it is likely that reading difficulty-known as dyslexia-can emerge from impairments at any stage of the reading circuitry. To understand contributing factors to reading difficulties within individuals, it is necessary to diagnose the function of each component of the reading circuitry. Here, we investigated whether adults with dyslexia who have impairments in visual proces

The development of a fast method for recording Schroeder-phase masking functions.

Schroeder-phase masking complexes have been used in many psychophysical experiments to examine the phase curvature of cochlear filtering at characteristic frequencies, and other aspects of cochlear nonlinearity. In a normal nonlinear cochlea, changing the "scalar factor" of the Schroeder-phase masker from -1 through 0 to +1 results in a marked difference in the measured masked thresholds, whereas this difference is reduced in ears with damaged outer hair cells. Despite the valuable information it may give, one disadvantage of the Schroeder-phase masking procedure is the length of the test - us

Salicylate-induced hearing loss and gap detection deficits in rats.

To test the "tinnitus gap-filling" hypothesis in an animal psychoacoustic paradigm, rats were tested using a go/no-go operant gap detection task in which silent intervals of various durations were embedded within a continuous noise. Gap detection thresholds were measured before and after treatment with a dose of sodium salicylate (200 mg/kg) that reliably induces tinnitus in rats. Noise-burst detection thresholds were also measured to document the amount of hearing loss and aid in interpreting the gap detection results. As in the previous human psychophysical experiments, salicylate had little

Effect of retinopathy of prematurity on scotopic spatial summation.

PURPOSE: To evaluate scotopic retinal organization in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) through a study of spatial summation. METHODS: Thresholds for a range of stimulus diameters (0.4°-10°) were measured using a two alternative, spatial, forced choice psychophysical procedure. The critical diameter (DCRIT) for complete summation was estimated in subjects with a history of severe ROP (N = 7) and mild ROP (N = 17). Subjects who were born preterm and never had ROP (N = 16) and term-born subjects (N = 7) were also tested. The subjects ranged in age from 9 to 17 (median 13.5) years. RESULTS: Crit

Visual evoked potentials to change in coloration of a moving bar.

In our previous study we found that it takes less time to detect coloration change in a moving object compared to coloration change in a stationary one (Kreegipuu etal., 2006). Here, we replicated the experiment, but in addition to reaction times (RTs) we measured visual evoked potentials (VEPs), to see whether this effect of motion is revealed at the cortical level of information processing. We asked our subjects to detect changes in coloration of stationary (0(°)/s) and moving bars (4.4 and 17.6(°)/s). Psychophysical results replicate the findings from the previous study showing decreased RT

Muscle fatigue based evaluation of bicycle design.

Bicycling posture leads to considerable discomfort and a variety of chronic injuries. This necessitates a proper bicycle design to avoid injuries and thereby enhance rider comfort. The objective of this study was to investigate the muscle activity during cycling on three different bicycle designs, i.e., rigid frame (RF), suspension (SU) and sports (SP) using surface electromyography (sEMG). Twelve male volunteers participated in this study. sEMG signals were acquired bilaterally from extensor carpi radialis (ECR), trapezius medial (TM), latissimus dorsi medial (LDM) and erector spinae (ES), du
