Changes in the central nervous activity of rats treated with dimethoate in combination with other neurotoxicants in different phases of ontogenesis.

Organophosphates are usually found in the environment with other pesticides and with pollutants of industrial origin can cause combined exposure involving unknown interactions between the agents. In this study, female Wistar rats were given 1/25 LD50 of dimethoate by gavage, combined with the same LD50 fractions of propoxur and cypermethrin or with arsenic (6.66 mg kg(-1)). The doses were given from day 5 to 15 of pregnancy, or that plus for the 4 weeks of lactation, or that plus 8 weeks for the male offspring after weaning. Control rats received distilled water. Electrophysiological recording

Assessment of cypermethrin and doramectin for controlling wohlfahrtiosis in Crete.

The fleshfly, Wohlfahrtia magnifica, became an animal health problem in Crete, Greece, during 1999, causing outbreaks of wohlfahrtiosis throughout the main livestock producing regions of the island. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of commercially available drugs in order to design control strategies against wohlfahrtiosis. The test substances were cypermethrin and doramectin sc. The test animals were randomly divided between three groups (30 in each): one treated with cypermethrin pour-on, one treated with doramectin and one untreated controls. The trial lasted 45 days and

Eradication of lice in cattle.

The purpose of this field study was to develop and evaluate eradication as a strategy to control lice in cattle. Thirty-three herds of cattle were selected and observed during a period of two and a half years. Before eradication, biting lice (Damalinia bovis) were present in 94% of the herds and 27% of the animals. Sucking lice (Linognathus vituli) were present in 42% of the herds and 5% of the animals. These levels were very similar to those reported from other countries in Northern Europe. The eradication strategy was successful in 28 of 33 herds, but lice were still present in 5 herds 3 to

Feeding and survival of Culicoides sonorensis on cattle treated with permethrin or pirimiphos-methyl.

The persistence of permethrin (5% a.i.) and pirimiphos-methyl (27% a.i.), applied to the dorsum of calves in the field against Culicoides sonorensis Wirth and Jones (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), was estimated using a hair-blood-feeding bioassay in the laboratory. Hair clippings were taken before treatment and 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 42 and 56 days after treatment from the dorsum, side and belly of treated and control calves. Laboratory-reared insects were allowed to feed through thin hair layers and a parafilm membrane on sheep blood warmed using a water-jacketed feeder. Some intoxication after exposu

Baseline immunity of the population and impact of insecticide-treated curtains on malaria infection.

It has been shown that insecticide-treated bed nets or curtains may reduce morbidity and mortality from malaria in hyper-holoendemic areas of sub-Saharan Africa. This protection could partially depend on the transitory imbalance between the anti-malaria immunity acquired by the population before the intervention and the lowered sporozoite load resulting from the anti-vector measure. To verify if the efficacy of the intervention is influenced by the baseline immune status of the population, we compared the protective effect of permethrin-impregnated curtains (PIC) against malaria infection amon

Interactions of recombinant and wild-type baculoviruses with classical insecticides and pyrethroid-resistant tobacco budworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

In tests with neonate Heliothis virescens (F.), we characterized interactions of all combinations of a recombinant Autographa californica (Speyer) nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcAaIT) that expresses an insect-selective neurotoxin (AaIT) and wild-type AcNPV when combined with low concentrations of several conventional insecticides. All combinations of the recombinant virus AcAaIT and insecticides showed a positive interaction (decrease in the median lethal time (LT50) compared with the LT50 for either component alone). Use of insecticide-impregnated targets for the control of tsetse flies (Glossina spp.) and trypanosomiasis occurring in cattle in an area of south-west Ethiopia with a high prevalence of drug-resistant trypanosomes.

In the Ghibe valley, south-west Ethiopia, a tsetse control trial using deltamethrin-impregnated targets was started in May 1990. The mean relative density of the main vector, Glossina pallidipes, fell from 2.1 flies per trap per day in the 12 months prior to introduction of tsetse control to 0.41 flies per trap per day in the 12 months after tsetse control was initiated. The annual mean prevalence of Trypanosoma congolense infections in cattle fell from 32% in the 2 years before tsetse control to 13% in the 2 years following deployment of targets. The largest reduction occurred in the first qu

Treatment of bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections in the HIV-infected host.

In the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected patient, skin infections caused by S aureus are extremely common. Impetigo, ecthyma, and folliculitis are all seen. Recurrences are common due to a nasal carriage rate of 50%. Dermatophytosis usually manifests as tinea pedis or unguium and is caused by Trichophyton rubrum. Oral candidiasis may be the initial evidence of HIV infection, and is predictive of more rapid progression to acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Topical agents are usually effective for oral lesions, but involvement of the esophagus requires oral imidazole therapy.

Comparison of crotamiton 10% cream (Eurax) and permethrin 5% cream (Elimite) for the treatment of scabies in children.

Permethrin 5% cream (Elimite) was approved as a treatment for scabies by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in September 1989. In a double-blinded, randomized study, it was compared with crotamiton 10% cream (Eurax) for the treatment of scabies in children 2 months to 5 years of age. Two weeks after a single overnight treatment, 14 (30%) of 47 children were cured with permethrin 5% cream, in contrast to only 6 of 47 (13%) of subjects treated with Eurax. Four weeks after treatment the figures were 89% and 60% cured for the two agents, respectively. In 10 of the 19 patients whose treatment fa

Environmental occurrence, spatial distribution, and probabilistic dietary risk assessment of cypermethrin and glyphosate residues in agricultural ecosystems of southwestern Nigeria.

Pesticide use in vegetable production raises concerns regarding environmental contamination, food safety, and human health, particularly where pesticide stewardship is inadequate. This study investigated the occurrence, spatial distribution, environmental partitioning, and dietary health risks of cypermethrin and glyphosate in water, sediment, soil, and Amaranthus cruentus collected from 30 sampling sites across three major vegetable-producing settlements in Oyo State, southwestern Nigeria. A total of 240 matrix-season samples were analysed using validated chromatographic methods, generating 4

First validation of kdr-based pyrethroid resistance detection in the emerging vector Culex perexiguus.

During a mosquito resistance survey, the emerging vector Culex perexiguus was detected for the first time in different locations in Sardinia (Italy), where Culex pipiens and Aedes albopictus constitute the majority of the local mosquito community. According to preliminary phylogenetic analysis based on cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene sequences, Cx. perexiguus specimens from Sardinia clustered with specimens from other Mediterranean populations. However, the limited resolution of the short COI fragment precludes robust inference regarding their geographic origin, dispersal routes, or

Efficacy of Gel Bait Insecticides with Different Modes of Action Against Pyrethroid-Resistant Blattella germanica Populations in Türkiye.

The German cockroach, Blattella germanica (Linnaeus) (Blattodea: Ectobiidae), is a major urban pest that can cause allergic reactions and mechanically carry pathogenic microorganisms. Its control has become increasingly difficult because of widespread resistance to commonly used insecticides, particularly synthetic pyrethroids. This study compared the efficacy of six commercial gel bait formulations containing imidacloprid, dinotefuran, clothianidin, indoxacarb, spinosad, or fipronil against four field populations of B. germanica from Antalya, Türkiye, previously characterized and routinely mo

Transcriptome Analysis of Deltamethrin Resistance Mechanisms in Aedes aegypti Populations from Metro Manila, Philippines.

Background: Arboviral transmission by Aedes aegypti is exacerbated by insecticide resistance, which undermines effective vector control strategies. In the Philippines, deltamethrin resistance in several Ae. aegypti populations has been reported and prompts an investigation into the possible molecular mechanisms involved. Methods: Two Ae. aegypti populations were subjected to susceptibility assays to deltamethrin and were RNA-sequenced for transcriptome analysis. Results: The two (2) Ae. aegypti populations were resistant to deltamethrin and had LC50 values of 1.26 and 2.15 μg/mL at the zeroth

Reduced Efficacy of Piperonyl Butoxide Based Long-Lasting Insecticide-Treated Nets Against Malaria Vectors in Western Kenya.

In response to rising insecticide resistance among malaria vector species, countries are implementing long-lasting insecticide treated nets (LLINs) coformulated with piperonyl butoxide (PBO), which can restore susceptibility to pyrethroid-based nets. In mid-2021, Kenya National Malaria Program rolled out PBO-LLINs in Bungoma County. We evaluated the susceptibility of wild-collected vectors to new versus used PBO-LLINs using the WHO cone bioassays. Results were confirmed with the WHO susceptibility assay. A total of 2,020 female Anopheles were tested, of which 1,480 were wild-collected and 540

Genome-wide investigation and functional analysis of 20S proteasome subunits in Locusta migratoria.

The 20S proteasome is a core component of the ubiquitin-proteasome system, participating in various biological processes such as cell cycle regulation, signal transduction, apoptosis, and protein homeostasis. However, its roles in mammals are well-documented, its function in the insect intestine remains largely unexplored. In this study, we identified 14 20S proteasome subunits, including 7 α-subunits and 7 β-subunits in Locusta migratoria, a worldwide agricultural pest. Phylogenetic tree revealed conservation of amino acid sequences among different species. While the conserved domains and mot

Associations between agricultural use of pyrethroid insecticides and asthma: AGRICAN cohort results.

RATIONALE: Following the withdrawal of organochlorines and organophosphates, pyrethroids have become the most used insecticides in both agricultural and domestic settings. OBJECTIVES: We analyzed data from the French AGRICAN agricultural cohort to assess associations of occupational pyrethroid exposures and allergic/non-allergic asthma. METHODS: At enrollment, asthma diagnosed by a doctor was reported by 11 815 participants (7028 classified as non-allergic and 4458 as allergic based on the presence of eczema and/or hay fever). Individual exposures to 17 pyrethroids were defined in 124 992 pa

Covalent organic framework nanospheres for solid-phase extraction of pyrethroids from vegetables.

Although various advanced materials have been developed for the enrichment of pyrethroids in food samples, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been scarcely explored for their extraction. We hypothesize that the abundant benzene ring structures in imine-type COFs can facilitate π-π and hydrophobic interactions with pyrethroids in vegetable matrices, thereby enhancing extraction efficiency. To test this hypothesis, core-shell magnetic COF nanospheres (Fe3O4@TAPT-TFPB-COF) were synthesized via a facile monomer-mediated in situ growth strategy and applied to magnetic solid-phase extraction of

Investigating the potential role of metabolic resistance genes in conferring cross-resistance to pyrethroids and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pollutants in the major malaria vector Anopheles coluzzii.

BACKGROUND: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of ubiquitous and recalcitrant environmental pollutants generated from petroleum activities and/or biological conversion of organic materials. Environmental exposure of mosquitoes to these pollutants can potentially select resistance to insecticides used in public health for vector control. To understand the cross-resistance potentials between PAHs and pyrethroid insecticides, microsomal fractions prepared from Anopheles coluzzii mosquitoes obtained from agricultural sites and a laboratory susceptible strain, Ngousso, were tested

First report of VGSC mutations for resistance to synthetic pyrethroids in brown dog ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu stricto) from Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Brown dog ticks, Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.), have spread globally and are an important vector of multiple pathogens affecting both dogs and humans. The control of these ticks on dogs and human dwellings often relies on synthetic pyrethroids, a chemical class of acaricides that targets the voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) protein of arthropod nerve cells, causing influxes of sodium and ultimately, paralysis. Invasive Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. ticks in the Americas can be broadly grouped into two main lineages: temperate and tropical (Rh. sanguineus sensu stric
