Q fever has been associated with granulomatous changes in clinical biopsy material obtained from liver and bone marrow. Local reactions to skin testing have been described in previously sensitized humans, but histological studies of such reactions have not been reported. We note that delayed hypersensitivity reactions to whole-cell phase I Q fever vaccine in immunized guinea pigs have a time course of development of induration characteristic of granulomatous hypersensitivity. Histological examination of such skin reactions on day 9 after testing revealed epithelioid cell infiltration and the p…

Endocarditis was recorded in 92 (11%) of 839 confirmed Q-fever infections reported for the Communicable Disease Report by laboratories between 1975 and 1981; Q-fever endocarditis accounted for approximately 3% of all cases of endocarditis reported. Two-thirds of the 92 reports were of men, and in both men and women endocarditis affected mainly young and middle-aged adults. Only one-third of Q-fever endocarditis patients were noted to have an underlying heart-valve lesion. There were also 30 reports of chronic Q-fever infection, and in 10 the primary clinical feature was liver disease. The labo

Congenitally athymic nude (nu/nu) mice and their phenotypically normal (nu/+) euthymic littermates were exposed to Coxiella burnetii administered as small-particle aerosols. After challenge, both strains of mice became infected, as characterized by rickettsemia, viable rickettsiae in the spleen, and serological conversion. The major difference noted was that euthymic animals had cleared rickettsiae from peripheral circulation and the spleen within 14 days. In contrast, rickettsiae were detected and isolated from spleen and blood of athymic mice through 60 days.

The plaque assay procedure developed for spotted fever and typhus group rickettsiae is also appropriate for scrub typhus and Q fever rickettsiae. The plaque titers of suspensions of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi and Coxiella burnetii compared favorably with end points obtained by titrations in mice.
