We present two cases of retroperitoneal masses with different presentations and outcomes. The first case was a 22 years old primigravida lady who underwent emergency caesarean section for preterm premature rupture of membranes with breach. On the operating table, a large retroperitoneal mass was identified and the biopsy confirmed Burkitt's lymphoma. This is a survey of normal variants and pathologic conditions involving the spleen and retroperitoneum. The study focuses on the various sonographic appearances of trauma, infection, and neoplasm involving these areas in an attempt to complement works dealing specifically with the pancreas, kidneys, and great vessels. Ultrasound-guided intervention (biopsy, drainage) is included.

A 40-year-old pregnant woman, who suffered a continuous episode of fever and anemia since the 26th week of pregnancy, was referred to our clinic for evaluation of her left flank pain and tumor. As retroperitoneal tumor was suspected by retrograde pyelography, sonography and CT, translumbar tumorectomy was performed under general anesthesia. The histological diagnosis was retroperitoneal abscess.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma, a pleomorphic sarcoma, represents the most common soft tissue sarcoma of late adult life. Approximately 15 per cent of the cases of malignant fibrous histiocytoma arise within the abdominal cavity or retroperitoneum. Although tumors in this series arose in many different sites, their proximity to the kidney necessitated a nephrectomy in 44 per cent of the cases (12 of 27). The computed tomography appearance of contrast material extravasated in the right perirenal space is presented. The complication occurred during test injection prior to translumbar aortography. The computed tomography findings were those of a right prerenal collection with high attenuation numbers representing contrast extravasation. Concurrent displacement of the second portion of the duodenum and inferior vena cava was present. No other retroperitoneal abnormalities were noted. The importance of computed tomography for early recognition and follow-up are emphasized.

BACKGROUND: Hem-o-Lok clips (HOLCs) are widely used in minimal access urological operations due to the advantage of vascular control and suture stabilization. In rare cases, however, they can develop problems themselves. Migration of HOLCs into the collecting system is a fairly rare complication after laparoscopic pyelolithotomy. Hydatid cysts, usually found in liver and lungs, are rare to be primarily located in the retroperitoneal region. It may mimic malignant mass and differentiation may be difficult. Pancreatic heterotopia is a rare congenital anomaly more commonly incidentally found in adults. While intra-abdominal cysts found on prenatal imaging are not uncommon, we examine a case of pancreatic heterotopia presenting in an abdominopelvic cyst on prenatal imaging. At birth, the neonate was found to have hypoglycemia unresponsive to treatment that resolved after cyst resection. We will review the etiology, imaging findings and clinical course of this anomaly, which should be considered in the differential diagnosis of newborns presenting with unexplained hypoglycemia.
