The indirect fluorescent antibody technique has been applied to detect antibody levels in jirds (Meriones unguiculatus) infected with Brugia malayi. Sonicated antigens were prepared from microfilariae and adult worms. Sonicated microfilariae were found to be satisfactory for this purpose. Cyanogen bromide-activated sepharose coated with soluble antigens prepared from microfilariae and adult worms was also used to detect antibodies to Brugia infections. 23 anthelmintics were tested against Brugia pahangi microfilariae and infective larvae in vitro and in Aedes aegypti infected with B. pahagi and jirds (Meriones unguiculatus) infected with a B. pahangi/patei hybrid. We studied demographic effects of the mitochondria-targeted antioxidant SkQ1 on free-breeding Campbell dwarf hamsters (Phodopus campbelli, Thomas, 1905, Rodentia, Cricetidae) in an outdoor vivarium with seasonally varying day length and temperatures. Social hierarchy is a critical variable in rodent models of stress psychopathology and is often assessed using simplified competitive paradigms. These tasks frequently lack sufficient construct validity for social dominance, limiting interpretations of the neural mechanisms underlying social behavior.
