Direct oral anticoagulants as secondary prophylaxis of venous thromboembolism in paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria: an Italian monocentric experience.

In 2011 Luzzatto et al. stated that "Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is the most vicious acquired thrombophilic state known in medicine". Fourteen years later, although anti-complement therapy reduced the incidence of thrombotic events, their management remains an unmet clinical need. Historically Vitamin K Antagonists were the first-choice medications for anticoagulation in this setting. Nowadays, Direct Oral Anticoagulants (DOACs) are the standard anticoagulant therapy in most settings due to their predictable pharmacokinetics, fixed dosing, and no need for laboratory monitoring. P

HDPairFinder: A data processing platform for hydrogen/deuterium isotopic labeling-based nontargeted analysis of trace-level amino-containing chemicals in environmental water.

The combination of hydrogen/deuterium (H/D) formaldehyde-based isotopic methyl labeling with solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-HRMS) is a powerful analytical solution for nontargeted analysis of trace-level amino-containing chemicals in water samples. Given the huge amount of chemical information generated in HPLC-HRMS analysis, identifying all possible H/D-labeled amino chemicals presents a significant challenge in data processing. To address this, we designed a streamlined data processing pipeline that can automatically

A systematic review of nonpharmacological interventions to reduce procedural anxiety among patients undergoing radiation therapy for cancer.

UNLABELLED: Procedural anxiety is a concern for a number of patients undergoing radiation therapy. While procedural anxiety is often treated pharmacologically, there is a clinical need for effective alternative strategies for patients who are contraindicated from medication use, and those who prefer not to take unnecessary medications. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to assess the efficacy of nonpharmacological interventions delivered to adults with cancer, in the radiation oncology department, just prior to, or during radiation therapy, in reducing levels of self-reported procedural an

Epidemiological analyses to inform stroke clinical practice guidelines development.

Stroke is one of the leading causes of mortality and the leading cause of functional impairment and cognitive deficits worldwide. It is important that clinical practice guidelines development is based on robust statistical and epidemiological data and their analysis throughout the whole process of guidelines development and implementation. The aim of this short communication is to analyse epidemiology of prevalence and incidence of ischaemic stroke, its main causes, brain imaging using MRI, recanalization therapies, secondary prevention with antiplatelet and anticoagulants, mortality data and

Harnessing Multiteam Systems in the Development of a Multifaceted Data Repository for Emergency Public Health Response.

The NIH launched the Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx) Initiative to facilitate timely, accurate, and accessible COVID-19 testing, research, and data sharing. The RADx Data Hub (hereafter referred to as Data Hub) is a centralized repository developed to enable secure access and secondary analysis of curated, de-identified data across RADx Initiative programs. Implementing this Data Hub required extensive nested multiteam system collaboration and alignment. Here, we describe the nested multiteam system framework that effectuated data access within a global crisis as a model for future pu

Predictive factors for secondary postpartum hemorrhage: a case-control study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Secondary postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is defined as excessive vaginal blood loss occurring between 24 h and 6-12 weeks after birth. The incidence of secondary PPH varies from 0.2% to 3.0%, and the peak incidence ranges from 1 to 2 weeks postpartum. There is no clinical evidence regarding the cause of secondary PPH. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the predictive factors for secondary PPH in an Asian population. METHODS: A case-control study was performed. The clinical data of 25 secondary PPH patients who had been admitted to our hospital between June 2012 and January 2019

Getting to the Bottom of It: Sexual Positioning and Stage of Syphilis at Diagnosis, and Implications for Syphilis Screening.

BACKGROUND: Syphilis control among men who have sex with men (MSM) would be improved if we could increase the proportion of cases who present for treatment at the primary stage rather than at a later stage, as this would reduce their duration of infectivity. We hypothesized that MSM who practiced receptive anal intercourse were more likely to present with secondary syphilis, compared to MSM who did not practice receptive anal intercourse. METHODS: In this retrospective analysis of MSM diagnosed with primary or secondary syphilis at Melbourne Sexual Health Centre between 2008 and 2017, we anal

ANCO-GeneDB: annotations and comprehensive analysis of candidate genes for alcohol, nicotine, cocaine and opioid dependence.

Studies have shown that genetic factors play an important role in the risk to substance addiction and abuse. So far, various genetic and genomic studies have reported the related evidence. These rich, but highly heterogeneous, data provide us an unprecedented opportunity to systematically collect, curate and assess the genetic and genomic signals from published studies and to perform a comprehensive analysis of their features, functional roles and druggability. Such genetic data resources have been made available for other disease or phenotypes but not for major substance dependence yet. Here,
