When Clinicians Drop Out and Start Over after Adverse Events.

BACKGROUND: The impact of adverse clinical events on health care workers has become a growing topic of research. Previous research has confirmed that after adverse clinical events, clinical staff often feel as though they failed not only their patient but also themselves, resulting in second-guessing of their clinical skills, competencies, and even career choices. This exploratory study reports on the experiences of health care providers who changed career paths as a consequence of an adverse clinical event. METHODS: The authors designed a 39-question survey capturing personal and professiona

Making Good in Unpromising Places: The Development and Cultivation of Redemption Scripts Among Long-Term Prisoners.

Generally regarded as an institution which frustrates rather than enables the process of desisting from crime, the potential for prisoners to find redemption in prison seems bleak. Despite unpromising conditions within the prison, we find strong evidence of reform and a desire to make amends among a cohort of long-term prisoners. While these prisoners were all participating in a rehabilitation program, their narratives of reform were highly individualized and situated in the context of their various experiences of long sentences. However, we report that these individualized accounts of reform

Perspectives of Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse: An Exploration of the Adjustments to Self-Structure through Meaning-Making in Therapy.

This critical literature review explored how adult survivors of child sexual abuse experienced adjustments to their self-structure through meaning-making in therapy. Following extensive searches of academic databases, 15 studies were identified for review. Using thematic analysis, eight themes emerged. The eight identified themes of trust, acknowledgement, evolution, acceptance, integration, congruence, relational, and agency represented distinct but interrelated components of self-structure. The findings also indicated that self-structure components may be both intra- and interrelational in n

Narrative Medicine perspectives on patient identity and integrative care in neuro-oncology.

Narrative Medicine sessions can encourage patients to rediscover personal identity and meaning by telling or writing their stories. We explored this process to improve care and quality of life for brain cancer patients in an academic neuro-oncology program. Brain cancer and its treatments may threaten a patient's quality of life and sense of self in many ways, including impaired cognitive skills, loss of memory, reduced coordination, and limited capacity for self-expression. The impact of symptoms and side effects on quality of life must be evaluated in terms of each patient's identity and may

On finding the C in CBT: the challenges of applying gambling-related cognitive approaches to video-gaming.

Many similarities have been drawn between the activities of gambling and video-gaming. Both are repetitive activities with intermittent reinforcement, decision-making opportunities, and elements of risk-taking. As a result, it might be tempting to believe that cognitive strategies that are used to treat problem gambling might also be applied to problematic video gaming. In this paper, we argue that many cognitive approaches to gambling that typically involve a focus on erroneous beliefs about probabilities and randomness are not readily applicable to video gaming. Instead, we encourage a focus

The lived experiences of individuals with Tourette syndrome or tic disorders: a meta-synthesis of qualitative studies.

There is a growing body of qualitative literature describing the lived experiences of people with tic disorders (TDs). The aim of this paper was to conduct a systematic review of this literature, synthesizing the perspectives of individuals on their experiences. Meta-synthesis methodology was utilized to review and draw together findings from 10 articles, from which key concepts were extracted, and over-arching themes generated. Six themes were identified to encompass the experience of TDs, including (1) cultural, semantic issues of the condition; (2) negative experiences in organizations and

Agreeableness and Self-Consciousness as Predictors of Induced Scratching and Itch in Patients with Psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis (PS) is a frequent skin disease accompanied by itch, a symptom that has been shown to be related to depression and self-consciousness. PS patients describe themselves as more agreeable than healthy controls (HC), a trait that might be protective against impulsive scratching. PURPOSE: This study is the first to analyze the relationship between agreeableness and induced scratching and between depression, self-consciousness, and induced itch in PS patients. METHODS: Twenty-four PS patients and 24 HC were shown two videos: an itch-inducing experimental video (EV) and a non-

Treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome in adolescence.

Adolescence is a time of rapidly changing reproductive hormones and menstrual patterns making diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) challenging in this population. Nonetheless, there is significant concern that the metabolic and reproductive abnormalities that emerge at adolescence associated with a diagnosis of PCOS have lifelong implications for the individual. There are limited data available on the best treatments for the adolescent with PCOS. The focus of treatment is often best served by attention to the individual abnormalities such as menstrual dysfunction, symptoms of androgen

A qualitative synthesis of adolescents' experiences of living with spina bifida.

In this article, I explore the experiences and perspectives of youth living with spina bifida, the second most common congenital condition in North America, to inform the development of health programs. I undertook a thematic metasynthesis to integrate qualitative evidence across studies examining the experiences of youth with spina bifida. I used 10 electronic databases to search for and review 4,051 abstracts, and identified 12 articles meeting the inclusion criteria. I examined those articles using a constant comparative approach, drawing on concepts of normalcy and biographical disruption

Be seen as a leader.

When a new work group forms, people often make snap judgments about who is qualified to lead. If the players don't already know one another, they tend to afford status to teammates on the basis of factors such as age, gender, race, attractiveness, and rank. These are characteristics beyond your control, but they don't necessarily predetermine the influence you can have on a group. Anyone, the authors say, can achieve higher status and more influence by getting in the right mind-set before engaging with new teammates. There are three psychological states that can increase the optimism, confiden

Leader identity as an antecedent of the frequency and consistency of transformational, consideration, and abusive leadership behaviors.

Drawing from identity-based theories of leadership, we examined relations of leader identity with leader behavior and perceived effectiveness. To do so, we employed multiwave methodology to examine the differential impact of leaders' chronic collective, relational, and individual identities on the frequency and consistency of their subsequent transformational, consideration, and abusive behaviors over a 3-week period. We also examined the relative importance of these leadership behaviors for predicting perceived leader effectiveness as rated by subordinates and peers. Results indicated that le

[Face recognition in patients with autism spectrum disorders].

The present study aimed to review previous research conducted on face recognition in patients with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Face recognition is a key question in the ASD research field because it can provide clues for elucidating the neural substrates responsible for the social impairment of these patients. Historically, behavioral studies have reported low performance and/or unique strategies of face recognition among ASD patients. However, the performance and strategy of ASD patients is comparable to those of the control group, depending on the experimental situation or developmental

The psychological burden of idiopathic adolescent gynecomastia.

BACKGROUND: For a population of adolescents, gynecomastia is a persistent problem. Occurring during a critical period in the formation of self-image and gender identity, this gender-incongruent process may disrupt normal psychological development. This study was designed to identify the prevalence of psychological disturbances in young male patients presenting with symptomatic gynecomastia to determine whether psychological examination should be included as a routine portion of this patient population's treatment. METHODS: From 2002 to 2009, patients aged between 10 and 18 presenting to our i

Consequences of psychological distress in adolescents with acne.

Acne may cause psychological distress that is associated with many psychiatric disorders. In this issue, Halvorsen et al. report suicidal ideation, mental health problems, and affective isolation to be relatively frequent in adolescents with acne. This report suggests that adverse events that have been attributed to therapies for acne, including suicidal ideation and depression, may reflect the burden of substantial acne rather than the effect of medications.
