Effect of growth hormone administration on ameliorating pregnancy outcome in women with advanced maternal age and exploration of its optimized utilization.

BACKGROUND: Age-related fertility decay is a great challenge for clinicians. Growth hormone (GH) supplementation has been studied as an adjuvant since late 1980s. However, it has not come to a consensus on the GH administration due to the ambiguous efficacy among studies with different enrolled population and dosage regime. METHODS: A self-controlled retrospective study was conducted on women with advanced maternal age who underwent at least a previous cycle without GH (GH-) and a subsequent cycle with GH co-treatment (GH+). The ovarian stimulation parameters and outcomes were compared betwee

Sickle Cell Transplantation Evaluation of Long-term and Late Effects Registry (STELLAR) to Compare Long-term Outcomes After Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation to Those in Siblings Without Sickle Cell Disease and in Nontransplanted Individuals With Sickle Cell Disease: Design and Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: There are sparse data on the long-term and late effects of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) for sickle cell disease (SCD). OBJECTIVE: This study aims to establish an international registry of long-term outcomes post-HCT for SCD and demonstrate the feasibility of recruitment at a single site in the United States. METHODS: The Sickle Cell Transplantation Evaluation of Long-Term and Late Effects Registry (STELLAR) was designed to enroll patients with SCD ≥1 year post-HCT, their siblings without SCD, and nontransplanted controls with SCD to collect web-based participant self-

Pre-pregnancy Body Mass Index (BMI) and delivery outcomes in a Canadian population.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide there has been a dramatic increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity in women of childbearing age. Growing evidence suggests that maternal overweight and obesity is associated with poor maternal and perinatal outcomes. This study evaluated the impact of maternal pre-pregnancy overweight and obesity on pregnancy, labour and delivery outcomes in a cohort of women with term, singleton pregnancies cared for by family physicians in community based practices. METHODS: This study is a secondary analysis of the All Our Babies Cohort, a prospective, community-based preg

Cloning of circadian rhythmic pathway genes and perturbation of oscillation patterns in endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs)-exposed mangrove killifish Kryptolebias marmoratus.

To investigate the effect of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on the circadian rhythm pathway, we cloned clock and circadian rhythmic pathway-associated genes (e.g. Per2, Cry1, Cry2, and BMAL1) in the self-fertilizing mangrove killifish Kryptolebias marmoratus. The promoter region of Km-clock had 1 aryl hydrocarbon receptor element (AhRE, GTGCGTGACA) and 8 estrogen receptor (ER) half-sites, indicating that the AhRE and ER half sites would likely be associated with regulation of clock protein activity during EDCs-induced cellular stress. The Km-clock protein domains (bHLH, PAS1, PAS2) were

Preferences for characteristics of contraceptive methods: a large, multi-country discrete choice experiment.

BACKGROUND: Nearly half of global pregnancies are unintended. Contraceptive use is preference-sensitive, including concerns about convenience, privacy and side effects (eg, irregular bleeding, weight gain). We conducted a multi-country study examining women's preferences for attributes of current and potential future modern hormonal contraceptives using a discrete choice experiment (DCE). METHODS: Between April and October 2022, we recruited nationally representative samples of women of reproductive age from seven countries (Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, Zambia, Pakistan and the USA

Implementation fidelity of a pilot group-based nutrition intervention for pregnant women (Nutri Pou Ti' Moun 2): a mixed methods assessment.

BACKGROUND: In the context of an overseas territory of a high-income country characterized by high fertility rates, cultural diversity, and food insecurity, a small-scale collective intervention with a focus on nutrition was implemented among pregnant women. Inspired by centering-based group care, without the health care component and with a food aid component, the interactive group sessions were co-facilitated by an expert on the session's topic and a peer-facilitator. The objective of the study was to assess the implementation fidelity to determine whether upcoming intervention outcomes are

Growth, instability and future outlook of livestock population and products in Bangladesh.

In the changing agri-food system, livestock play an important role, providing not only protein and micronutrients but also organic fertilizers, employment, and women's empowerment in many developing countries including Bangladesh. Reliable forecasting of livestock populations and products is necessary to inform policy decisions related to food security, supply, demand, and imports and exports, as well as self-sufficiency goals and associated inter- and intra-regional trade opportunities. However, robust long-term projections for livestock systems remain limited in the literature. Therefore, th

Lived experiences of assisted reproductive technology treatment among men with azoospermia in Taiwan: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Azoospermia, defined as the absence of sperm in the ejaculate, represents the most severe form of male infertility. Advancements in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) have greatly improved treatment options, allowing men with azoospermia to have biological children. While these men are significantly likely to experience psychosocial challenges due to the dual impact of infertility and ART treatment, few studies have explored their lived experiences in East Asian societies. Our study aimed to explore lived psychosocial experiences of ART treatment among men with azoospermia in

Women with PCOS have a later menopausal transition and a lower prevalence of menopausal symptoms at age 46: A population-based birth cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have been suggested to experience later menopause, yet population-based studies are lacking. The present study aimed to assess, in a population-based birth cohort, whether women with PCOS are more likely to experience late peri-/postmenopause or to have menopausal symptoms in their mid-40s than women without the syndrome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The present study is a long-term, population-based prospective cohort study from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 (NFBC1966). The PCOS group (n = 380) was identified based on the Rotterdam

Effectiveness of face to face and virtual education to promote breast self-examination based on the theory of planned behavior: a randomized controlled trial study.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) is the most prevalent cancer among women in both developed and developing countries. Breast self-examination (BSE) is crucial for the early detection of BC. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of face-to-face and virtual education on BSE, based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB). METHODS: This randomized controlled trial was conducted on 240 women aged 30-55 in northern Iran from 2020 to 2022. Participants were selected using a random sampling method and were randomly assigned to three groups of 80 each (face to face, virtual, and control). The fac

Evaluation of the need for the integration of a nurse specialist (EndoNurse) into the interdisciplinary care of patients with endometriosis: Cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Like other chronic diseases, endometriosis also requires long-term, individualized and multidisciplinary care. The integration of specialized nursing care has already been proven in other chronic diseases, but it is unclear whether and in which areas the integration of an endometriosis nurse specialist (EndoNurse) would be welcomed by patients with endometriosis. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to identify the need and acceptance of an integration of a nurse specialist into the care of patients with endometriosis and possible counselling topics. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study

Evidence-Based Contraception: Common Questions and Answers.

Primary care clinicians are uniquely situated to reduce unintended pregnancy in the context of a patient's medical comorbidities, social circumstance, and gender identity. New evidence regarding contraception use has emerged in recent years. The copper intrauterine device is the most effective option for emergency contraception, with similar effectiveness found for the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system, 52 mg, and both offer extended future contraception. Ulipristal given within 120 hours after unprotected intercourse is the most effective oral emergency contraceptive. Oral levonorg

AKT3 and related molecules as potential biomarkers responsible for cryptorchidism and cryptorchidism-induced azoospermia.

BACKGROUND: Cryptorchidism is a common congenital malformation strongly related to future oligospermia and male infertility. Normally functioning early-stage spermatogonia are vital to ensure fertility. The present study aimed to identify new differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with signaling pathways related to spermatogonial stem cell (SSC) maintenance during early spermatogenesis. METHODS: GEO2R was used to screen for genes differentially regulated in cryptorchidism using mRNA expression profiling data in the GEO database. DAVID was used to perform GO and KEGG enrichment analy

Anti-Müllerian hormone levels among contraceptive users: evidence from a cross-sectional cohort of 27,125 individuals.

BACKGROUND: Anti-Müllerian hormone has become the clinical biomarker-based standard to assess ovarian reserve. As anti-Müllerian hormone testing becomes more common, more individuals are seeking to interpret the values obtained while using contraceptives. To appropriately counsel women, a better understanding of anti-Müllerian hormone levels in women using different contraceptives is needed. OBJECTIVE: To study the association between different forms of contraceptives and anti-Müllerian levels in women of reproductive age. STUDY DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study including 27,125 US-bas

Abnormal cleavage up to Day 3 does not compromise live birth and neonatal outcomes of embryos that have achieved full blastulation: a retrospective cohort study.

STUDY QUESTION: Do embryos displaying abnormal cleavage (ABNCL) up to Day 3 have compromised live birth rates and neonatal outcomes if full blastulation has been achieved prior to transfer? SUMMARY ANSWER: ABNCL is associated with reduced full blastulation rates but does not impact live birth rates and neonatal outcomes once full blastulation has been achieved. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY?: It is widely accepted that ABNCL is associated with reduced implantation rates of embryos when transferred at the cleavage stage. However, evidence is scarce in the literature reporting birth outcomes from blas

Comparison of community-level deprivation indices and their association with adverse pregnancy outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The Social Vulnerability Index, Maternal Vulnerability Index, and Area Deprivation Index measure community-level resilience to stressors, vulnerability to adverse maternal health outcomes, and socioeconomic disadvantages, respectively. These indices are commonly used to gauge community-level influence on health outcomes. Thus, for them to serve as effective clinical tools, their ability to predict adverse obstetrical outcomes must be evaluated. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the 3 indices and their associations with adverse pregnancy outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: This was a sec
