An internet-based self-applied rat phobia treatment using a Virtual Therapy Assistant: Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

Specific phobias are a common anxiety disorder that deteriorates the lives of people who suffer from them. To reduce the symptoms produced by this mental disorder exposure therapies have been used. However, low- and middle-income countries, including Mexico, have the lowest rate of treatment due to multiple barriers that prevent addressing mental health problems. Self-applied treatments have been explored in previous studies, nevertheless, high dropout rates are a common problem in this kind of treatment. An alternative is using immersive self-applied treatments that could help increase adhere

The Association of Receiving a Diagnosis of Idiopathic Scoliosis with the Self-Esteem and Mental Health of Pediatric Patients: A Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) are at increased risk of emotional distress, yet little is known about the immediate psychological impact of receiving the diagnosis itself. This study aimed to evaluate short-term changes in self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and stress before and after AIS diagnosis, and in the early post-diagnostic period. METHODS: In this cohort study, 179 adolescents (10-18 years) referred for suspected AIS completed the Rosenberg self-esteem scale (RSES) and Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS 21) before clinical and radiog

The Network Model of Mentalization, Social Vulnerability, and the Self in Autism: A Comparison With Neurotypical Adults.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by alterations in social understanding and self-related experience that overlap with broader dimensions of psychosocial vulnerability. These domains are tightly interconnected, motivating the use of analytic approaches that can capture their organization as complex associations rather than as isolated dimensions. We applied network analysis to autistic adults (N = 156) and demographically matched neurotypical controls (N = 454). Gaussian graphical models were estimated using sum scores of psychosocial constructs, and networks were compared using

Comparison of temperament and character between early- and late-onset Korean male pathological gamblers.

PURPOSES: We investigated differences in temperament and character between early and late onset Korean pathological gamblers to identify whether the age of onset of pathological gambling (PG) could discriminate PG subtypes, like in alcoholism. METHODS: Male subjects (N = 104) with DSM-IV PG were tested with Cloninger's temperament and character inventory (TCI). We divided patients into two groups: early onset (N = 34) with gambling problems before reaching 25 years old, and late onset (N = 70) with gambling after the age of 25. RESULTS: Early-onset patients showed a higher score in novelty s

A self-guided Internet-based intervention for individuals with chronic pain and depressive symptoms: study protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite the existence of evidence-based therapy options for the treatment of chronic pain and comorbid depressive symptoms (e.g., CBT), many individuals remain untreated. Treatment gaps result from a lack of specialists, patient fear of stigmatization, or patient immobility. Internet-based self-help interventions could serve as an anonymous and flexible alternative treatment option. In a pilot study, chronic pain patients with comorbid depressive symptoms who used a generic Internet-based depression program showed a significant reduction in depressive symptoms (but not pain symptom

Self-Management education for adults with poorly controlled epILEpsy [SMILE (UK)]: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is a common neurological condition resulting in recurrent seizures. Research evidence in long-term conditions suggests that patients benefit from self-management education and that this may improve quality of life (QoL). Epilepsy self-management education has yet to be tested in a UK setting. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of Self-Management education for people with poorly controlled epILEpsy [SMILE (UK)]. DESIGN: A parallel pragmatic randomised controlled trial. SETTING: Participants were recruited from eight hospitals in London and

An exploration of physical activity experiences throughout the Huntington's disease journey: supporting development of theoretically underpinned complex interventions.

PURPOSE: Huntington's disease is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disease. Progressive physical, behavioural and cognitive impairments cause loss of independent function. Physical activity interventions are important components of comprehensive intervention strategies and may help alter the functional decline trajectory. Qualitative research has an important role to play in developing theoretically sound, well-defined physical activity interventions in Huntington's disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight focus groups were conducted with people with prodromal to late stage Huntington's di

Mediators of Change in Cognitive Behavioral and Mindfulness-Based Online-Interventions for Hypoactive Sexual Desire Dysfunction in Women.

Low sexual desire is a common sexual problem among women. When it is accompanied by significant personal distress, it may be diagnosed as hypoactive sexual desire dysfunction (HSDD). Both cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based therapy (MBT) are effective treatments for HSDD when delivered in person or online. In this randomized controlled treatment study, CBT and MBT consisted of eight guided self-help modules delivered online, and participants completed measures at pretreatment and after 3, 6, and 12 months. Nine variables were examined as potential mediators of treatment ou

Self-care strategies used for acute attack of interstitial cystitis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the kinds of self-care used by women with interstitial cystitis and to find effective ways to manage symptoms of acute attack. STUDY DESIGN: One hundred thirty-eight women with interstitial cystitis completed a survey indicating how often they used and how effective they found strategies in four physical self-care subdomains (medication, treatment, diet, and body comfort) and three psychologic self-care subdomains (cognitive/stress reduction, distraction, and help-seeking). RESULTS: Descriptions of symptoms during an "acute attack" are more consistent with symptoms de

Integrating dream work into group schema therapy for individuals with borderline patients.

INTRODUCTION: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is associated with significant difficulties in emotional regulation and a higher prevalence of nightmares, which increase emotional instability and decrease quality of life. Dreams represent valuable therapeutic material that can reveal internal conflicts and support self-awareness. OBJECTIVE: This article explores dreamwork in group schema therapy (GST) aimed at the early maladaptive schemas (EMS) and modes. The ultimate goal of these approaches is to support the Healthy Adult mode in processing the emotional needs of patients with BPD. ME

The impact of photovoice on the report of emotions in individuals with persistent physical symptoms: Results of an experimental trial.

OBJECTIVE: Identifying and reporting emotions can be challenging for individuals with persistent physical symptoms (PPS), like tinnitus or tension-type headaches. Photovoice (PV) helps people identify and report their emotions by photographing relevant objects or situations. The aim of our study was to examine whether PV facilitates the report of emotions in individuals with PPS. METHODS: We randomly assigned 169 participants with PPS to one of three groups: a PV group, a writing group, or a passive control group. The PV group took daily photographs related to their symptoms and coping, the w

An Integrative Bio-Psycho-Social Theory of Anorexia Nervosa.

UNLABELLED: The need for novel approaches to understanding and treating anorexia nervosa (AN) is well recognized. The aim of this paper is to describe an integrative bio-psycho-social theory of maintaining factors in AN. We took a triangulation approach to develop a clinically relevant theory with face validity and internal consistency. We developed theoretical ideas from our clinical practice and reviewed theoretical ideas within the eating disorders and wider bio-psycho-social literature. The synthesis of these ideas and concepts into a clinically meaningful framework is described here. We s

The mediating role of self-esteem in the link between childhood adversities and criminality among North African adult males: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) significantly influence the physical and mental health of adults, and lead to poor behavioral outcomes such as criminal activities. However, the relationship between ACEs and criminal justice involvement is not fully understood, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa region. OBJECTIVE: To explore this relationship in the Tunisian context while also examining the potential mediating role of self-esteem. METHOD: We conducted a case-control study comparing two groups of adult males in Tunisia: A case group of 403 inmates (April 2023) an
