This is a fully documented case, including biopsy and patch testing, of a patient who was hypersensitive to self-polymerizing polymethyl methacrylate. On two occasions, a 24-year-old woman with a history of multiple allergies developed allergic reactions to temporary acrylic dental restorations. The lesions disappeared upon removal of the restorations. Microscopic findings were consistent with an allergic reaction. Patch testing confirmed that the allergen was the monomer and indicated methods of processing the self-polymerizing resin to allow it to become essentially nonreactive in a sensitiz

INTRODUCTION: Urine self-sampling for human papillomavirus (HPV)-based cervical cancer screening is a non-invasive method that offers several logistical advantages and high acceptability, reducing barriers related to low screening coverage. This study developed and evaluated the performance of a low-cost urine self-sampling method for HPV-testing and explored the acceptability and feasibility of potential implementation of this alternative in routine screening.
METHODS: A series of sequential laboratory assays examined the impact of several pre-analytical conditions for obtaining DNA from uri

Purpose: Radiation risk communication is a critical component of radiation protection and the public's understanding of radiation risks and benefits. Risk communication becomes even more complicated when considering cultural and language differences. In the US, many diverse communities face risk communication challenges. We obtained radon testing data to evaluate patterns of radon testing in Allentown, the third largest city in Pennsylvania. Radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking and is associated with over 21,000 lung cancer deaths in the US annually. It is es

BACKGROUND: Many Taiwanese women (43.8%) did not participate in regular cervical screening in 2011. An alternative to cervical screening, self-sampling for human papillomavirus (HPV), has been available at no cost under Taiwan's National Health Insurance since 2010, but the extent and likelihood of HPV self-sampling were unknown.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed to explore determinants of women's likelihood of HPV self-sampling. Data were collected by questionnaire from a convenience sample of 500 women attending hospital gynecologic clinics in central Taiwan from June to Octobe

OBJECTIVES: Self-collection of cervico-vaginal samples for human papillomavirus (HPV) testing has the potential to make cervical cancer screening more accessible to underscreened women. We evaluated the acceptability and ease of use of home-based HPV self-collection within a diverse population of low-income, infrequently screened women.
METHODS: Participants were low-income women from North Carolina who had not received Pap testing in 4 or more years. Eligible women received a self-collection kit containing instructions and a brush for home-based sample collection. A total of 227 women return

Cervical cancer is preventable through gynecological screening. To promote participation among non-attending women, self-collected vaginal samples for detection of high-risk human papillomavirus (hr-HPV) is an option. The aims of this study were to investigate the response of self-collected vaginal samples for hr-HPV testing among long-term non-attendees, to explore the attendance at follow-up among HPV-positive women, and to analyze the prevalence of hr-HPV and severe cervical dysplasia or cancer among the responders. A vaginal self-sampling kit was sent to 19,766 women aged 30-70 years who h

This longitudinal study with female youth in the slums of Kampala, Uganda (n = 130), explored the impact of the Transcendental Meditation® (TM®) technique on self-esteem, the primary outcome measure, and self-efficacy, gratitude, hope, tiredness, and resilience as secondary outcomes. Quality-of-life behaviors were also assessed, including excessive alcohol use. After baseline testing participants learned TM over five consecutive days. Participants practiced TM at home for 20 min twice a day and attended two follow-up sessions. Post-testing occurred at five months. Significant improvements in s

BACKGROUND: Dried blood spot (DBS) testing for hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA provides a sampling option that avoids venepuncture and can be carried out in a nonclinical setting. Large-scale evaluations are needed to understand how DBS testing can reduce HCV burden. This study estimated prevalence of, and factors associated with, HCV RNA and treatment initiation among people enrolled in a state-wide pilot of people testing in the NSW DBS Pilot in New South Wales, Australia.
METHODS: People at risk of HIV/HCV could participate via (1) self-registration online with a DBS collection kit delivered a

The HIV burden is high among female sex workers (FSW) in Ethiopia, yet HIV testing coverage is suboptimal. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among 137 FSW in Addis Ababa. We examined factors related to recent HIV testing and self-reported HIV serostatus using logistic regression. HIV prevalence was 10%; and among HIV-negative participants, 63% reported recent HIV testing. Involvement in sex work for ≥5 years (aOR 3.25; 95% CI 1.22, 8.69; p-value 0.02) and hormonal contraceptive use (aOR 3.37; 95% CI 1.09, 10.41; p-value 0.03) were significantly associated with recent HIV testing. BACKGROUND: HIV/AIDS remains a major global health issue, and young students are a key affected group. Conventional interventions have overlooked students' psychological and behavioural differences, reducing their impact. This study will identify specific psychosocial factors that drive college students to get HIV testing.
METHODS: We surveyed 4451 college students in various regions in China from December 2022 to March 2023. Analysis occurred in two steps. First, we used partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) to test linear causal relationships among psychosocial const

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, family medication history is not routinely assessed as part of a patient's family health history (FHH). The information is self-reported and can depend on the individual's subjective perception. To illustrate how pharmacogenetic (PGx) testing results could be used to validate self-reported family medication history on drug-related problems (DRP), as well as to inform medication-related decisions, we herein present a case involving ten members of the same family.
CASE PRESENTATION: Prior to a planned surgery, a preemptive PGx panel test was performed for a nin

OBJECTIVE: Cervical cancer and its precursor lesions are treatable if detected early; however, screening participation for high-risk human papillomavirus infections (hr-HPV) remains low. In 2021, Germany recorded 4,544 new cervical cancer cases and 2,071 related deaths. The HaSCo study evaluates the feasibility of HPV self-testing to improve screening participation. This sub-study evaluates performance and acceptability of three self-testing tools.
METHODS: This prospective, randomized sub-study examined Evalyn-Brush, FLOQSwabs, and first-void urine Colli-Pee among women aged 30-65 in Hannove…

OBJECTIVES: Previously, based on 6 months of follow-up, we showed that HPV self-sampling improved participation in cervical screening compared to a reminder letter for Pap testing for never- and under-screened women. Here, we report follow-up and related screening outcomes for women who participated in the initial self-sampling over two screening rounds.
SETTING: The randomised controlled trial was conducted in Australia.
METHODS: Never- and under-screened women were randomly allocated to the HPV self-sampling or the reminder for Pap test arm and followed at 6 and 36 months since the kits we

INTRODUCTION: Adherence counselling with point-of-care (POC) drug-level feedback using a novel tenofovir assay may support pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) adherence; however, perceptions of urine testing and its impact on adherence are not well studied. We qualitatively examined how POC tenofovir testing was experienced by transgender women (TGW) in Uganda.
METHODS: Within a cluster randomized trial of peer-delivered HIV self-testing, self-sampling for sexually transmitted infections and PrEP among HIV-negative TGW showing overall low PrEP prevention-effective adherence (NCT04328025), we cond…
