Qualitative insights into a digital CBT program for AYAs with cancer: Participant perceptions of factors impacting feasibility and engagement.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer face high levels of depression and anxiety. Yet developmentally appropriate and cancer-informed mental health services remain limited. Digital cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) programs may help address known access barriers, but many lack the tailoring and engagement needed for meaningful retention of AYAs with cancer. Mind Your Total Health (MYTH) was partially tailored to reflect AYA cancer experiences. This study explored how AYAs perceived their experiences with MYTH and offered recommendations for refinements related to feasibi

A national atlas of the distribution of tsetse flies in Côte d'Ivoire.

African animal trypanosomosis (AAT) is one of the major diseases of livestock in Côte d'Ivoire. However, the lack of comprehensive, nationally aggregated data hinders the rational planning of control measures and the estimation of their impacts on disease transmission. To address this shortcoming, the Institut Pierre Richet (IPR, Ministry of Health) and the Directorate of Veterinary Services (Ministry of Livestock) embarked on the development of a national tsetse flies and AAT in Côte d'Ivoire. The atlas is a dynamic, georeferenced database on the distribution of disease and its vectors, and t

Coxiella burnetii abortion in farmed plains bison (Bison bison bison) in western Canada.

Coxiella burnetii is a zoonotic bacterium that affects human and animal health globally and has detrimental socioeconomic effects on the livestock industry. This organism is known to cause abortion in sheep, goats, and cattle that is characterized by placentitis with minimal to no fetal lesions. In April 2025, the Diagnostic Services Unit at the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (Alberta) received 11 aborted fetuses from a single herd of farmed plains bison (Bison bison bison). Initial submissions lacked placenta, delaying diagnosis. The 5th submission, which included placen

"A creature inside me": perceptions and representations of HIV among adolescents living with HIV in Malawi.

Malawi is among the countries with the highest HIV prevalence worldwide. Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) face diverse challenges, which influence their emotional wellbeing and long-term health, in addition to impacting HIV onward transmission. HIV education, especially the use of fear-based animation, but also the figurative language used for HIV, contribute to how ALHIV perceive and respond to their HIV status. The aim of the study was to explore how ALHIV in Malawi describe, perceive, and represent HIV, with a particular focus on the role of language in shaping these perceptions and its

Covalently immobilized recombinant humanized collagen type III (rhCol III) for enhanced anticoagulation and endothelialization.

Given the significant prevalence of mitral regurgitation, transcatheter edge-to-edge repair with mitral valve clips has become a critical area of research, focusing on innovative, minimally invasive treatment strategies. However, as a blood-contacting device, device-induced thrombosis and difficulty in endothelialization of its surface after implantation are potential factors that limit the long-term service of the device. In this study, a protective coating with enhanced anticoagulation and endothelialization was prepared via the covalent immobilization of recombinant humanized collagen type

Where we stand on doxyPEP depends on where we sit: a viewpoint.

There is a striking variation in national doxycycline post exposure prophylaxis (doxyPEP) guidelines for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Whilst some countries advocate doxyPEP for all men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) with certain risks, others restrict the use to research settings. In this viewpoint, we argue that part of the explanation for this divergence can be attributed to different underlying conceptual frameworks. For individuals and organizations dominated by biomedical individualist frameworks, the primary goal of STI services is reducing the inciden

An economic framework for One Health investment: A critical tool for decision makers.

One Health operationalization needs political and financial support and decision makers need to have an economic rationale for their actions. Therefore, both advocates and decision makers need economic methodologies to highlight the value of One Health. The objective of this paper is to propose a conceptual framework grounded in six economic principles that can serve as building blocks for an investment case for One Health. Some of these principles relate to the implementation of interventions, showing how One Health approaches can be more efficient. These include inefficiencies in resource al

Quantitative proteomic profiling in brain subregions of mice exposed to open-field low-intensity blast reveals position-dependent blast effects.

The neurological consequences of combat blast-induced neurotrauma (BINT) pose important clinical concerns for military service members and veterans. Previous studies have shown that low-intensity blast (LIB) results in BINT with multifaceted characteristics in mice exposed to open-field blast in prone position. Although the prone position is natural for rodents, experimental models of blast using this position do not represent common scenarios of human standing while being exposed to blast during deployment or military training. In this study, we used our previously developed BINT mouse model

Sexual Dimorphism in Chronic Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) Infection: Evidence to Inform Elimination Efforts.

Sexual dimorphism in infectious diseases refers to the different infection susceptibilities and outcomes between males and females, and has been described for many pathogens, including hepatitis B virus (HBV). HBV is a substantial global health problem, with close to 300 million people chronically infected, and accounting for a million deaths each year, with an urgent need for enhanced interventions to support progress towards elimination goals. Sexual dimorphism has a strong influence in HBV infection, with males more likely to be exposed, to develop chronic infection, and to suffer from comp

Evaluation of ligand modified poly (N-Isopropyl acrylamide) hydrogel for etiological diagnosis of corneal infection.

Corneal ulcers, a leading cause of blindness in the developing world are treated inappropriately without prior microbiology assessment because of issues related to availability or cost of accessing these services. In this work we aimed to develop a device for identifying the presence of Gram-positive or Gram-negative bacteria or fungi that can be used by someone without the need for a microbiology laboratory. Working with branched poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) tagged with Vancomycin, Polymyxin B, or Amphotericin B to bind Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria and fungi respec

Molecular genotyping of 15 B. anthracis strains isolated in Eastern Siberia and Far East.

Bacillus anthracis is a pathogenic bacterium, which causes anthrax disease. The ability of this bacterium to form spores, which can be preserved in soil for decades and cause outbreaks later on, makes this pathogen a serious problem for veterinary and health services of many countries. Siberia is one of the most anthrax-influenced regions of Russia. In this research we report on the results of genotyping based on whole genome SNP analysis of 15 strains, isolated on the territory of Eastern Siberia and the Far East in 1956-2018. In this research, we sequenced 15 genomes of B. anthracis strains

Research priorities for control of zoonoses in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Zoonoses pose major threats to the health of humans, domestic animals and wildlife, as seen in the COVID-19 pandemic. Zoonoses are the commonest source of emerging human infections and inter-species transmission is facilitated by anthropogenic factors such as encroachment and destruction of wilderness areas, wildlife trafficking and climate change. South Africa was selected for a 'One Health' study to identify research priorities for control of zoonoses due to its complex disease burden and an overstretched health system. METHODS: A multidisciplinary group of 18 experts identified

Male reproductive morphofunctional evaluation of a Neotropical sperm-storing vespertilionid bat (Myotis levis) in an environmental context.

Myotis levis (yellowish myotis) is a small Neotropical insectivorous vespertilionid bat that provides valuable ecosystem services, such as control of disease vectors and agricultural pests. Aiming to describe the fluctuations of the reproductive organs throughout the year, the gonads and epididymis from 124 adult bats were histologically evaluated. These animals were captured in Santuário do Caraça, Minas Gerais, Brazil. After the initial screening, six bats per reproductive stage (in a representative month) had specific organs harvested for further investigation. The gonads, epididymis, acces

Hyperhomocysteinemia-Induced Oxidative Stress Exacerbates Cortical Traumatic Brain Injury Outcomes in Rats.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among military service members and civilians in the United States. Despite significant advances in the understanding of TBI pathophysiology, several clinical reports indicate that multiple genetic and epigenetic factors can influence outcome. Homocysteine (HCY) is a non-proteinogenic amino acid, the catabolism of which can be dysregulated by stress, lifestyle, aging, or genetic abnormalities leading to hyperhomocysteinemia (HHCY). HHCY is a neurotoxic condition and a risk factor for multiple neurological and cardiovascu
