INTRODUCTION: Sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait affect over 300 million people worldwide. Vaso-occlusive crises (VOCs) are the most common reason that these patients seek medical care.
OBJECTIVES: Recently, a newly identified "trigger" (involving glucose and electrolytes) for a mechanism of abnormal actin polymerization may offer further understanding with regard to the sequence of events that cascade to complications such as VOCs in those with sickle cell disease (SCD) and as well as those with sickle cell trait.
METHODS: A literature review to identify the current standard of care …

Hemoglobinopathies are the most common genetic diseases in Turkey. The incidence of sickle cell trait is 10.0% and beta-thalassemia (beta-thal) trait is 3.7% in the Cukurova region of southern Turkey. Sickle cell anemia is prevalent in the Cukurova region, but beta-thal is seen all over the country. A prenatal diagnosis center was established in 1992 at Adana, Turkey, for the prevention of sickle cell anemia and beta-thal. Fifteen hundred and seventy-five fetuses were examined at the Cukurova University Hospital, Adana, Turkey. Three hundred and eighty-six fetuses were diagnosed as homozygous …

The use of tourniquets for upper and lower extremity operative procedures is controversial in patients with sickle cell hemoglobinopathies. The authors used Ovid and MEDLINE®, PubMed, and CINAHL® to detect English-language reports of any surgical procedure where a tourniquet was used on a patient with sickle cell disease or trait. Four papers met the search criteria and were reviewed. These studies included 96 patients with hemoglobin SS, SC, and sickle cell trait (AS). The investigations differed in tourniquet type, perioperative care, operative procedure, and patient genotype distribution. T…

Between 1970-1990, the Laboratory tested 38,391 specimens for hemoglobinopathies, of which 7,935 were positive. The major abnormalities detected were beta thalassemia trait (4,688), alpha thalassemia trait (1,248) and sickle cell trait (847). Clinically significant hemoglobinopathies detected were Hemoglobin H disease (100), sickle cell disease (67) and sickle cell Hemoglobin C disease (79). Hemoglobinopathies are therefore common in the Hamilton area as a reflection of the cultural diversity of area citizens. Of the 49 patients with thalassemia without documented iron deficiency, 8 (16%) rece…

There are six described complications of sickle cell trait or disease : gross hematuria, renal infarction, papillary necrosis, nephrotic syndrome and urine concentration defects. Because of a high frequency of sickle cell trait patients among patients suffering from medullary kidney carcinoma, it has been called the seventh complication. We briefly review physiopatholgy and diagnosis of these complications.

In this report, we present a 29-year-old African American female who was brought to a local emergency department after being found unresponsive by her mother. The etiology of her stroke and severe hemolysis remained unknown, despite her mother reporting the patient's history of co-inheritance of sickle cell trait and beta-thalassemia trait, and extensive workup during her prolonged hospitalization. She was diagnosed with sickle cell disease (Sβ+ type) two years after discharge when she was referred to a sickle cell specialist for persistent anemia. Here, we also briefly review the challenges t…

Some mothers had affected fetuses several times. Preimplantation gene…

Changes in filterability during 28-day bloodbank storage of normal, sickle trait, and sickle cell anaemia red cells were investigated. The technique used involved constant positive-pressure filtration of red cell-saline suspensions through cellulose nitrate membrane filters of 8-microns pore size for 2 min. Erythrocyte filtration rate was expressed as the number of red cells filtered per minute; calculated from the volume and red cell count of the filtrates. This was a departure from the commonly used filtrate volume measurements alone, and seemed to permit a clearer definition of changes in f

In Yemen, the prevalence of sickle cell trait and β-thalassemia trait are high. The aim of this premarital program is to identify sickle cell and thalassemia carrier couples in Yemen before completing marriages proposal, in order to prevent affected birth. This can be achieved by applying a low-cost premarital screening program using simple blood tests compatible with the limited health resources of the country. If microcytosis or positive sickle cell is found in both or one partner has microcytosis and the other has positive sickle cell, so their children at high risk of having sickle cell or…

The study aims to describe the logistics and results of a programme for newborn screening for sickle cell disease based on samples from the umbilical cord. Samples were dried on Guthrie cards and analysed by high pressure liquid chromatography. All suspected clinically significant abnormal genotypes were confirmed by age 4-6 weeks with family studies and then recruited to local sickle cell clinics. The programme has screened 66,833 samples with the sickle cell trait in 9.8 % and the HbC trait in 3.8 %. Sickle cell syndromes occurred in 407 babies (204 SS, 148 SC, 35 Sbeta+ thalassaemia, 6 Sbet…

Within the past few years it has been noted that abnormal types of hemoglobin found in certain persons are associated with definite clinical disorders. At least four different varieties of sickle cell anemia are now recognized, three of them being heterozygous and one homozygous. When the gene for sickling is represented once, the person is asymptomatic and is said to have "sickle cell trait." However, when the sickle cell trait is present in combination with certain other hemoglobin abnormalities such as hemoglobin C or D or with thalassemia trait, symptomatic clinical disease results. The ho…

BACKGROUND: Thalassemia, sickle cell disease and other hemoglobinopathies are not rare in Portugal and European Mediterranean area. Homozygotic patients present major hematological disease but heterozygotic minor assymptomatic forms are frequent, mainly thalassemia minor and sickle cell trait. In these cases mycrocytosis with decrease or red cell volume and mean corpuscular volume or abnormal rigid erythrocytes are found and can lead to hemorheologic disturbances. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the incidence of asthma in hemoglobinopatic patients allergic to house dust mites.

A 22-year-old female with factitious sickle cell anemia and recurrent painful crises is described. Because she had sickle cell trait and iron deficiency anemia, she could successfully feign the symptoms of homozygous sickle cell anemia. The identification of this syndrome in patients with genetic disorders is presented.

Basra, southern Iraq, was mapped for haemoglobinopathies and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. Of 1064 couples aged 14-60 years recruited from the Public Health Laboratory, 49 had beta-thalassaemia trait, 69 had sickle-cell trait, 2 had haemoglobin D trait, 2 had haemoglobin C trait and 1 had high persistent fetal haemoglobin. Carriers of major beta-globin disorders comprised 11.48%. G6PD deficiency was detected in 133 individuals (12.5%). Only 10 couples (0.94%) were at risk of having children affected with either sickle-cell disease or beta-thalassaemia major. These defect
